Maritzburg, CT City win to go top

The second round of Absa Premiership matches wrapped up in midweek, with Maritzburg United and Cape Town City leading the log after impressive victories, while Kaizer Chiefs suffered a defeat to leave coach Steve Komphela under ever more pressure.

Tuesday night’s action featured the ‘curse of the former player’, as Rodney Ramagalela scored a brace of fine goals to see Polokwane City claim a surprise 2-1 away win over his old employers Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the Eastern Cape, Chippa United demonstrated that PSL returnees AmaZulu may have a tough season ahead of them, as goals from Moeketsi Sekola and Abel Mabaso took the Chilli Boys to a 2-0 win, while Orlando Pirates and Baroka FC played to a third successive 1-1 draw - both of their meetings last season ended with the same scoreline.

The headline result of Wednesday’s matches was a 2-1 victory for SuperSport United away to Chiefs, who played the majority of the match with 10 men following the early dismissal of defender Erick Mathoho.

The Amakhosi have played three competitive matches this season and are still awaiting their first win.

There was no such problems for Cape Town City and Maritzburg United, who romped to 3-1 and 2-0 home wins over Ajax Cape Town and Platinum Stars respectively.

A brace for Evans Rusike sees the Team of Choice lead the log on goal difference, while Benni McCarthy’s Citizens are breathing down their necks after a victory which featured goals for Letsie Koapeng, Ayanda Patosi and Teko Modise.
