Ajax with much work to do - Menzo

Ajax Cape Town were always one step behind Orlando Pirates in Tuesday’s 0-1 loss in the Absa Premiership and must work hard to improve in their upcoming games, said coach Stanley Menzo.

“I think when you play against Orlando Pirates and other top teams in the league you must have a good day. You are playing against a good team. You shouldn’t have too much respect. If you want to win or get a good result, respect is OK, but not too much,” said the coach after a second defeat in three games for the club.

“We were not in the game for the first 20 minutes, neither defensively or offensively. We didn’t challenge in the duels. After 20 minutes we try to change it and we came more into the game but unfortunately we had, by then, already conceded a goal. You can’t concede a goal from a throw-in. The second part of the first half was better, we were more in the game and in the duels. We created two good chances near the end end but offensively I think we didn’t play well. We didn’t keep the ball well, we didn’t always make good decisions and the circulation of the ball was slow. It was easy for Pirates to re-organise and to press us,” he added.

There were, however, some positives, added the Ajax coach.

“It was bit better in the seconds half. We stayed in the game until the end and we had two chances but you can see the difference between Pirates and Ajax. If you are 100 percent on your game you will struggle against a team like this because they have more qualities – the way they controlled the ball was better than us. We need two touches to control the ball, they need one touch. Their ball speed was higher and that makes a difference. It’s not an excuse and I don’t blame the players for that but we have to work on those things because they will help us make the next step,” said Menzo.
