Bulls hit by injuries

The Vodacom Bulls were handed some bad news ahead of their Currie Cup clash with the Golden Lions this coming weekend, as it was confirmed that three of their stalwarts aren’t likely to play in the competition again this year.

Hooker Jaco Visagie, midfielder Dries Swanepoel and winger Jamba Ulengo were all ruled out and aren’t likely to take the field again as the Bulls look to resurrect their campaign.

According to team doctor Herman Rossouw, Visagie struggled to recover from cartilage damage on his shoulder, and consulted a specialist, who ruled that he would be operated on this week. This means a minimum period on the sidelines of six to eight weeks for the hooker.

“Dries Swanepoel was also operated on for an Achilles tendon injury and he will also be out for six to eight weeks,” Dr Rossouw said.

“Jamba Ulengo has a chronic patella injury and will unfortunately miss the rest of the Currie Cup season.”

On the good side, the Bulls welcomed back midfielders Burger Odendaal and Johnny Kotze to training this week, while Piet van Zyl will also follow the return to train protocol.

“Irne Herbt is likely to be on the sideline for another week after a scope on his knee revealed a cartilage problem while Roelof Smit, who has been out for a while, is starting to make steady progress and should be back next week.”

Another player likely to return next week is Travis Ismiael, who will start selective training sessions then.
