We have turned a corner - Swys

Xerox Golden Lions coach Swys de Bruin believes his side has turned the corner and are on an upwards curve after their horrific start to the Currie Cup season this year.

The Lions face off with the Vodacom Blue Bulls on Saturday at Emirates Airline Park in a match that will be massive for both sides in terms of their campaigns to qualify for the semifinals.

The Lions have returned prop Dylan Smith into the match 23 for the game after a six month layoff with a shoulder injury he picked up back in March in Buenos Aires during Super Rugby with the outing his first back after the operation he underwent.

Andries Ferreira also returns to partner Marvin Orie after the birth of his daughter while Shaun Reynolds comes onto the bench for Branco du Preez, who has returned to the Springbok Sevens team.

De Bruin believes the team have well turned the corner.

“I think we can say that, it is early days if you think what is left, there are the big unions left, but we are playing well. It is getting better, we are carrying better, the defensive systems are better and we are getting more line-breaks, so we must still finish games properly through. That’s a work-on, we lose concentration at a stage and we need to play for 80 minutes,” De Bruin said.

While he believes his side should be able to beat their northern neighbours, De Bruin believes the Blue Bulls are a dangerous side, despite their record this season.

“We will need to be sharp. It is an interesting game, we all know how much experience Mitchell has. I told guys the other day Mitch isn’t on the field, it is the players that need to do the job. But that they can be dangerous and can click at any time is true and it’s a reality.

“I’ve been saying the same thing all along – we are absolutely process driven, we want to do well in the Currie Cup, obviously. But we have to look to the future as well, that is why we are experimenting, rotating positions and testing out leadership positions. With all our players not around it is an excellent time to do this.”
