Rebels will target Lions' maul - Lemmer

Emirates Lions assistant coach Phillip Lemmer believes the Melbourne Rebels will be targeting them in the maul, where they were particularly vulnerable against the Jaguares last week.

Coach Swys de Bruin brought back Marvin Orie and Stephan Lewies as the lock partnership for the match against the heavier Rebels pack as part of four changes from the win over the Jaguares.

Lemmer said the team welcomed back Orie, who had missed the last few games because of an injury.

"It is always good to have a Springbok back in the team. He was injured and he missed last week, so it is always good to have guys back who are hungry to play," Lemmer said.

"We always would welcome Marvin back and his leadership is key, especially in stopping the driving maul. It is one of his strengths. He adds more weight in the scrum and Marvin is excited to help the back five going forward in the scrum as well."

With the Lions struggling to contain the Jaguares maul, Lemmer says they identified the problem and believe they have fixed it.

“It was a small detail that the guys missed, but that is unfortunately how it is, if you don't get it spot on in the first second, you are always in trouble. The senior pack of theirs definitely exposed the youngsters a bit and I'd rather have it in a game you win, than in one that you lose and then you can't fix it. It is definitely something we fixed this week."

"They're a top notch team and have won three out of three. They have a massive lineout unit and are taller than most teams in the competition and they strive for front foot ball, so we have to kill the momentum in the scrums and lineouts – that is where it all starts. It is a massive responsibility for the pack again.”

SA under-20 winger Tyrone Green comes into the side at fullback, with Ruan Combrinck moving to the wing.

On the bench hooker Jan-Henning Campher makes a first appearance for the Lions, Sti Sithole returns, as do locks Rhyno Herbst and Ruan Vermaak while Lionel Mapoe and Andries Coetzee are both expected to take the field from the bench.
