A composed 74 from Matt Short and a maiden half-century by Cooper Connolly steered Australia to a two-wicket win over India on Thursday, sealing the three-match one-day series with a game to go.

After India made 264-9 at a sold-out Adelaide Oval on the back of Rohit Sharma's 73, the hosts reached their target with 22 balls remaining.

Short, who was twice dropped, led the charge before Connolly (61 not out) and Mitch Owen (36) finished the job.

Cooper Connolly guided Australia to victory at Adelaide Oval, but he was well supported by Mitch Owen and Xavier Bartlett as the next gen stepped up.

Australia won a rain-affected opening game in Perth by seven wickets, with the dead-rubber clash in Sydney on Saturday.

"It's awesome and rapt to have won the series," said Australia skipper Mitch Marsh, who won the toss and sent India in.

"(Josh) Hazlewood was unbelievable, the whole bowling unit kept trying to pick up wickets and awesome batting. We'll certainly enjoy the series win."

The hosts made a tentative start to the chase with Marsh falling for 11 to Arshdeep Singh after swinging wildly.

Travis Head also departed softly, thick-edging Harshit Rana to Virat Kohli on 28.

Short was joined by Matt Renshaw and they got the scoreboard moving with quick singles, putting on 55.

But spin bamboozled Renshaw, bowled for 30 by Axar Patel, then Alex Carey, dismissed for nine by Washington Sundar attempting a sweep shot.

Short kept his focus, making a third ODI half-century, before departing to Rana, caught on the ropes as he tried to up the tempo.

Some power-hitting from Owen, who slammed two fours and three sixes, left them needing 50 from the last 10 overs, a target reached after some late jitters.

"I think we had just enough runs on the board... it's never easy to defend those totals when you drop a couple of catches," said India skipper Shubman Gill.

"There was a little bit in the wicket initially, but as the ball got older it got better to bat on."

Earlier, quick Hazlewood opened with 13 dot balls, but it was Xavier Bartlett who got the breakthrough for Australia.

In the team for Nathan Ellis, he tempted Gill down the pitch only to chip an easy catch to Marsh at mid-off.

That brought Kohli to the crease and after an eight-ball duck in Perth the 36-year-old was keen for runs.

But he lasted just four deliveries with Bartlett trapping him lbw to leave India reeling at 17-2.

It was the first time Kohli has been dismissed for consecutive ducks in his long ODI career.

Rohit weathered the storm, reaching a 59th half-century. Shreyas Iyer (61) ably played a supporting role until Mitchell Starc broke their 118-run partnership.

He removed Rohit in the first over of his second spell, with Hazlewood collecting a mis-timed pull shot in the deep.

India's former captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should not be written off after their team's seven-wicket loss to Australia in the first of three one-day internationals, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said on Tuesday.

After Sunday's defeat in Perth, the three-match series moves to Adelaide on Thursday before concluding in Sydney on Saturday.

Kohli and Rohit, who retired from the game's other formats, now feature solely in the 50-over cricket. With the 2027 World Cup in mind, the pair returned to action on Sunday for the first time since lifting the Champions Trophy in March.

Neither looked convincing against Australia's pace bowlers, with Rohit edging Josh Hazlewood to second slip on eight and Kohli cutting Mitchell Starc to a diving Cooper Connolly at backward point for a duck.

However, Ponting is confident the pair will soon rediscover their touch.

"You don't write off champion players ever. These two have been among the best, and while I've said before that Virat's the best 50-over player I've ever seen, you don't write them off," Ponting said on the ICC Review podcast.

"They'll find a way to contribute and win games for their team, and if they do that, they'll most likely be in that World Cup team in 2027. I'd expect to see both those guys bounce back into it pretty quickly.

"Adelaide is a great place to bat and a great place to play cricket. But it won't be easy for the fact that they are facing some of the best white-ball bowlers that have ever played the game."

Ravi Shastri, who coached Rohit and Kohli during their peak years, said few understand better how revered the pair are in India and abroad, and that they would not risk their legacy by playing on too long.

"The contribution is over a decade, decade and a half in the case of Virat," Shastri said. "It's special. Whether they finish tomorrow or they finish the day after or whenever. That legacy will remain."

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh guided his side to a comfortable seven-wicket win against India in a rain-affected first one-day international in Perth on Sunday.

Chasing 131 for victory in a match that was reduced to 26 overs a side, Marsh scored 46 not out as the home side cruised to an easy win to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Matt Renshaw was unbeaten on 21 alongside Marsh as Australia reached 131-3 with 29 balls remaining. Josh Philippe contributed 37, batting at No 4.

"Obviously the weather played its part today," Marsh said. "But it's nice to get a win.

"The ball was swinging around for both teams out there so it was a little bit of a challenge to get through.

"I was proud of the way our young guys came out and got the job done."

Marsh, who was also named player of the match, won the toss and chose to field due to the inclement weather around the Western Australia city.

It paid dividends as India's innings was hampered by rain delays, which frustrated the visitors who struggled to build any momentum.

A quickfire 38 off 31 balls from KL Rahul helped India to recover to 136-9, with Australia set 131 to win after the total was adjusted on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern system.

Australia's opening bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc troubled the Indian batsmen with a good line and movement.

Hazlewood had Rohit Sharma caught at second slip for eight before Starc claimed Virat Kohli without scoring, leaving the visitors 21-2.

India skipper Shubman Gill was caught by wicketkeeper Philippe off Nathan Ellis for 10 before the first rain delay, with India 23-3 after 8.5 overs.

"When you lose three wickets in the powerplay you are always trying to play a catch-up game," Gill said.

"But there are a lot of learnings for us from this game and a lot of positives as well."

Hazlewood grabbed his second victim when Shreyas Iyer gloved a ball to Philippe before another long delay with India at 45-4.

When they eventually resumed, the game was reduced to 26 overs.

Rahul smashed two huge sixes but fell on the boundary going for a third.

Nitish Reddy blasted 19 runs off the last two overs but the reduced total was never enough.

The two teams meet again in Adelaide on Thursday before the final match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

 All eyes in Perth are on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the two India stalwarts prepare for the opening one-day international against Australia on Sunday, marking the first national team outing for the pair since winning the Champions Trophy in March.

India's new ODI skipper, Shubman Gill, told journalists on Saturday that he had had numerous conversations with his predecessors who had retired from the shortest and longest forms of the game, about how to take the team forward.

"Definitely very exciting - big shoes for me to fill carrying over the legacy (Virat and Rohit) left for us," the 26-year-old said.

"These are the kind of players when I was a kid, I used to idolise them. The kind of game that they used to play, the kind of hunger that they had is something that inspired me. It's a big honour to lead such legends of the game and learn from them."

Gill has already captained at T20I and test level, but the upcoming three-match series will be the first time he has led in ODIs, where he averages nearly 60 with the bat.

"I think in front of a difficult situation, I wouldn't shy away from getting any suggestions or advice from them," he said.

"How they converse and what kind of communication or messaging they had with the players is something that helped me get the best out of myself. That's the kind of captain I would want to be, where all my players feel very secure in the job they have to do."

Australia captain Mitch Marsh acknowledged that India's two returning batsmen are partly responsible for an expected bumper crowd at the 60 000-seat Perth Stadium, which is nearing a sell-out despite a forecast of rain.

"A lot of people are going to come and watch them. If it is their last time on Australian soil, I hope they enjoy it," the 33-year-old said, before cheekily adding that he would prefer "not too much good cricket from them".

The Perth local, who struck two hundreds and averaged 70 across white-ball formats against South Africa and New Zealand in recent months, dead-batted any suggestion that continued good form might prompt a test recall ahead of the Ashes series this summer.

"I've got tickets for day one and two, I haven't asked the wife yet, but that's about as much thought as I've given it."

Australian cricket fans may have their last chance to see India batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in action when the pair tour in the one-day international series starting in Perth on Sunday.

Boasting almost 600 ODIs between them, both 36-year-old Kohli and 38-year-old Rohit are active internationally only in the 50-overs format but their future beyond the three-match series is uncertain.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir was tight-lipped when asked this week whether the duo might continue on under new captain Shubman Gill, who leads the ODI squad for the first time in Australia.

Rohit and Kohli last played for India in the Champions Trophy final in March in which they beat New Zealand.

If Australia is to be their last taste of international cricket, it will be in front of crowds packed with fans from the country's booming Indian communities in Perth, Adelaide (October 23) and Sydney (October 25).

A number of test players in the Australia squad, including batter Travis Head and veteran pacemen, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, will use the series to loosen up for the Ashes.

It will Starc's first start in international cricket in the Australasian summer, having retired from T20s.

Marnus Labuschagne, a late call-up to replace injured allrounder Cameron Green, will hope to convert his hot red-ball form into white-ball runs to continue building his case for an Ashes recall.

Labuschagne was dropped from the test side for the tour of West Indies but has roared back into contention with centuries in his last two Sheffield Shield matches for Queensland.

Cricket Australia said on Friday Green had been ruled out of the ODI series after having "low grade side soreness" in training and would likely return to play in Shield cricket.

The allrounder joins Pat Cummins on the sidelines, with the regular skipper struggling to shake off lower back bone stress which has put him in doubt for the start of the Ashes.

Australia will also be without regular wicketkeeper Alex Carey for the Perth opener against India along with spinner Adam Zampa.

Josh Philippe will be behind the stumps, while left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann gets a rare chance in the one-day side in Zampa's absence.

The ODIs precede a five-match T20I series starting in Canberra on October 29 as both nations tune up for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year.

In-form Marnus Labuschagne was added to Australia's ODI squad to face India after all-rounder Cameron Green was ruled out of the series with a side strain.

Labuschagne was initially omitted for the three matches starting in Perth on Sunday.

But he has slammed four domestic centuries in five innings, including two in the 50-over game, to thrust himself back into contention for the Ashes series against England and earn a white-ball reprieve.

Green's injury was diagnosed as "low grade" but Australia are not taking any chances with him ahead of the Ashes, which start in six weeks.

"Cameron Green has been ruled out of the (India) series having experienced low-grade side soreness at training this week," Cricket Australia said.

"Green will complete a short period of rehabilitation and is tracking to return to play in round three of the Sheffield Shield to continue his preparation for the Ashes."

Round three of the domestic competition is due to start on October 28.

Labuschagne will join the ODI squad once the current Sheffield Shield round finishes this weekend.

Former test opener Matt Renshaw is in the frame for a long-awaited one-day international debut after being named in Australia's squad for this month’s home series against India.

Renshaw played the last of his 14 tests against India in New Delhi nearly three years ago but has earned a surprise place in the Mitchell Marsh-captained squad released on Tuesday after piling on the runs for Australia 'A' against Sri Lanka 'A' in July.

The 29-year-old lefthander was one of four additions to the 15-man squad, joining fast bowler Mitchell Starc and allrounders Matt Short and Mitchell Owen.

With Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis recently retiring from ODI cricket, Renshaw and power-hitter Owen could form part of a new-look Australian middle order in the lead-up to the 2027 World Cup.

Starc, meanwhile, returns to international action for the first time this summer after resting from the South Africa tour.

Australia will play three ODIs against India starting on October 19 in Perth, followed by a five-match T20 series.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the ODI side in Pat Cummins' absence, with the fast bowler recovering from a back injury ahead of the home Ashes.

Selectors also named a 14-man squad for the first two T20s in Canberra (October 29) and Melbourne (October 31), with Josh Inglis to replace Alex Carey as wicketkeeper after recovering from a calf strain.

Carey, who helped Australia beat New Zealand 2-0 in the recent T20 series at Mount Maunganui, was included in the ODI squad but will miss the series-opener to play red-ball cricket in the domestic Sheffield Shield.

Test skipper Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain, the country's cricket board said Saturday, starting with the series in Australia.

The 38-year-old batsman Rohit and fellow stalwart Virat Kohli, 36, were both however named in the squad for the three-match series beginning on October 19.

Top-order batsman Gill, 26, is now test and one-day skipper, and vice-captain of India's T20 side.

He took over the test captaincy from Rohit starting with the series in England in the summer, earning praise for both his leadership and batting.

He led from the front, scoring 754 runs in five tests to help India draw the keenly contested series 2-2.

Gill also leads Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

Rohit, one of India's most successful limited-overs captains, led the side to a record third Champions Trophy title in Dubai earlier this year.

He and Kohli have both retired from T20Is and tests.

Gill's vice-captain for the Australia series will be Shreyas Iyer.

India currently top both the ODI and T20 team rankings of the International Cricket Council.
