Andre Russell and Sherfane Rutherford put on the biggest sixth-wicket partnership in a Twenty20 international to steer the West Indies past Australia by 37 runs in their third and final clash on Tuesday.

Both men crunched quickfire half-centuries to propel the visitors to 220-6 in Perth with Australia managing just 183-5 in reply, David Warner top-scoring on 81 in his last appearance for Australia at home.

The hosts won the first match in Hobart by 11 runs and sealed the series with a 34-run victory at Adelaide.

The West Indies made a horror start after winning the toss and opting to bat, losing three wickets in the opening three overs.

But Russell (71 off 29 balls) and Rutherford (unbeaten 67 off 40) led the fightback, with both posting their highest T20 scores in a 139-run sixth-wicket partnership that set a new standard.

Spinner Adam Zampa went for 1-65 off four overs – his most expensive in the format.

"I was just happy I could contribute tonight," said Russell. "I think it's just the nature of this team, we are never out of it. Five wickets down, but there wasn't any panic in the change rooms.

"I'm happy we came together as a team and we were definitely playing as a unit tonight."

Australia started well with Warner and captain Mitchell Marsh reaching 61 without loss after the six-over powerplay.

Warner clocked his 3 000th run as he brought up a 26th half-century off 25 balls before Marsh departed for 17, skying a catch to Jason Holder off Akeal Hosein.

They reached 98-1 at the halfway mark but were pegged back by tight bowling.

The match turned when Australia lost three wickets for three runs. Roston Chase bagged two of them, including Warner and Josh Inglis (one), while Romario Shepherd bowled Aaron Hardie (16).

Glenn Maxwell blasted an unbeaten 120 in Adelaide but, with 96 needed off the final five overs, it was a bridge too far even for him and he fell for 12 as the chase fizzled despite Tim David cracking a lightening 41.

"We knew they'd come into this series, they're a really good team with some amazing cricketers, so fair play to the West Indies," Marsh said.

With Australian pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood rested, Xavier Bartlett earned a debut and Johnson Charles nicked to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade in his first over before he bowled Kyle Mayers in his second over.

In between, Nicholas Pooran was removed by Jason Behrendorff to leave the West Indies reeling at 17-3.

But Chase began the rebuild, taking 17 off Bartlett's third over before his luck ran out against Zampa, bowled for 37 as he attempted another big hit.

Hardie accounted for Rovman Powell (21) before Rutherford and Russell came to the rescue.

Russell blasted seven sixes and four boundaries, while Rutherford hit five sixes and five fours.

Big-hitting Glenn Maxwell slammed a 50-ball century as Australia raced to 241-4 in the second of three Twenty20 internationals against the West Indies in Adelaide on Sunday.

 

The 35-year-old was in ominous touch, coming to the crease with the hosts on 64-3 in the seventh over and blasting eight sixes and 12 fours in a blistering knock of 120 not out from 55 balls.

The hosts won the first match in Hobart on Friday by 11 runs on the back of 70 from David Warner and the veteran was again ultra-aggressive at the start after they were sent in to bat.

He smacked a six off his second ball from spinner Akeal Hosein to signal his intent but was then pegged back by some tight and accurate bowling.

Opening partner Josh Inglis lasted just six balls, surviving a run out before being caught in the deep trying to hit Jason Holder out of the ground.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh whacked an enterprising 29 off 12 balls, including two big sixes, to propel them to 58-2 off the six-over power-play.

But he tried one slog too many and was well caught at mid-on by Holder off Alzarri Joseph, with Warner following soon after on 22 going for the big hit.

That brought Maxwell to the crease and he steered them to 99-3 at the halfway mark.

Maxwell was looking for the boundary with every delivery, and frequently found it with a range of magnificent shots, reaching his half-century off 25 balls.

He shared an 82-run partnership with Marcus Stoinis (16) before being joined by fellow big-hitter Tim David (31 off 14) in a 95-run stand that saw him bring up his fifth T20 century.

David Warner slammed 70 off 36 balls in his 100th Twenty20 international and Adam Zampa grabbed three wickets as Australia beat the West Indies by 11 runs in the opening clash of their three-match series on Friday.

The hosts crunched 213-7 after being sent in to bat on a windy and cold Hobart evening.

The visitors put up a valiant fight but they could only manage 202 for eight, with Zampa taking 3-26.

Warner, who became only the third man after New Zealand's Ross Taylor and India's Virat Kohli to play 100 internationals in each format, hit 12 fours and a six in his explosive knock to anchor the Australia innings.

"Pleasing to get the win on the board. I feel refreshed and a lot of energy," said Warner.

"I said I want to play the Twenty20 World Cup and finish there and I'm excited and it's a good journey we've got going through the next six months."

The West Indies hammered 16 off the opening over from Jason Behrendorff in a perfect start to the chase and put on 72 without loss in the six-over powerplay, just five shy of what Australia managed.

But when Johnson Charles fell for 42 to Zampa and Brandon King for 53 to Marcus Stoinis after an 89-run stand, the wheels began coming off.

Stoinis accounted for Shai Hope (16) and Glenn Maxwell removed Rovman Powell (14).

It left the West Indies needing 72 from the final five overs, but when Zampa snared two more wickets in four balls it blunted the charge and the win proved out of reach.

"We struggled to get partnerships, but it was a good game of cricket," said West Indies skipper Powell. "We just have to back ourselves a little bit more."

Warner smacked five boundaries from his first 10 balls, including four in Jason Holder's opening over.

The 37-year-old brought up his 25th T20 half-century off just 22 balls to send a clear message to selectors that he plans to be in contention for the World Cup later this year.

He was eventually out to a slower Alzarri Joseph delivery, gloving to Nicolas Pooran behind the stumps.

With Travis Head and Steve Smith rested, Josh Inglis opened with Warner and was equally aggressive in thumping 39 off 25 balls until removed by Holder, offering Powell a simple catch at mid-off.

Mitchell Marsh was dealing with Covid in the lead-up but showed few ill effects in hitting a giant six off Andre Russell to help Australia reach 110 for one at the halfway mark before being caught behind off Joseph for 16.

The run rate eased when Warner departed before Tim David took up the mantle with an explosive unbeaten 37 off 17 balls.

After testing positive for COVID-19, Mitchell Marsh will captain Australia from a distance when they take on West Indies in the first of three Twenty20 internationals on Friday, Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

The all-rounder will be allowed to play the match at Hobart's Bellerive Oval. But he will have a separate dressing room and be forced to keep a distance from other players while in the field.

Marsh was recently confirmed as captain for the three-match T20 series in New Zealand that follows the clashes against the West Indies, making him almost certain to retain the role for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and United States in June.

Josh Inglis and Cameron Green have both played internationals in recent weeks despite testing positive for COVID, which also infected Australia coach Andrew McDonald last month.

Australia needed just 6.5 overs to thrash a woeful West Indies by eight wickets in an embarrassing end to their one-day international series in Canberra on Tuesday, with Jake Fraser-McGurk slamming 41 off 18 balls.

 

The hosts won the first game in Melbourne by eight wickets and the second in Sydney by 83 runs to clinch the series, with the West Indies playing for pride.

But after Australia skipper Steve Smith won the toss and sent them in on a humid day, they crumbled to 86 all out in the 25th over against an attack missing Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

In reply, Australia recorded their shortest successful run chase in the format with 259 balls remaining to cap a stunning capitulation by the Caribbean side.

"It was a good performance, the bowlers put it in the right areas and everything seemed to work out. One of those days where everything came off," said Smith.

"It's been good opportunity to expose a few players to international cricket and they've shown that they can play at this level."

Explosive 21-year-old opener Fraser-McGurk showed his immense talent in only his second match with five fours and three sixes in an electric 41 before he was caught going for another big hit off Alzarri Joseph.

Aaron Hardie was the only other wicket to fall, caught behind for two off Oshane Thomas.

Josh Inglis blasted an unbeaten 35 while Smith was not out six.

Earlier, paceman Xavier Bartlett took 4-21 to go with the 4-17 he bagged on his debut in Melbourne. Fellow fast bowler Lance Morris grabbed 2-13 before leaving the field with a side strain.

"Our batting let us down. It did for the entire series," said West Indies captain Shai Hope.

"We need to do some real soul searching to understand what's needed in certain conditions. Can't really put your finger on one thing, it comes down to mindset."

Bartlett struck early with Kjorn Ottley trapped lbw for eight and, while Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty steadied the ship, they were in survival mode, with just 36 runs coming from the opening 10 overs.

Their partnership ended when Morris was introduced and grabbed his first international wicket, courtesy of Marnus Labuschagne holding a spectacular diving catch at point to remove Carty for 10.

Hope needed a big score and drove Morris to the ropes, but he lasted just five balls before falling lbw to Shaun Abbott, leaving the visitors in trouble on 43-3.

Debutant Teddy Bishop soon followed for a duck, undone by the sheer pace of Morris whose fullish ball clattered the middle stump before he left the field midway through his fifth over.

Athanaze was the one shining light, making a battling 32 off 60 balls before mis-hitting a sweep offspinner Adam Zampa with Abbott collecting a simple catch.

Two more wickets in three balls left the West Indies reeling, with Romario Shepherd out for a golden duck to Bartlett and Matthew Forde run out after a comical mix-up with Roston Chase.

Bartlett then cleaned up the tail with two more wickets.

Skipper Steve Smith and Cameron Green eased Australia to a crushing eight-wicket victory over the West Indies with a dominant 149-run stand in the first one-day international in Melbourne on Friday.

Smith finished unbeaten on 79 off 79 balls and Green, batting at No 3, was 77 not out from 104 balls as Australia cruised to the winning target of 232 with 11.3 overs to spare.

Opener Josh Inglis set up the platform with a pulsating 65 off 43 balls, including 10 fours and a six.

It was Australia's 10th consecutive ODI win, including their World Cup victory in India last year, and the pressure will be on the West Indies to prevent a series clean sweep.

It was all too easy for Australia, with Travis Head the only batting failure with four off five balls.

Debutant Australian paceman Xavier Bartlett was named the man of the match with 4-17 off nine overs, initiated by a wicket with only his third delivery.

Green raised his half-century off 62 balls, with Smith's 50 coming off 58 balls.

Inglis's fifty was powered off just 28 balls after plundering three boundaries off Matthew Forde's fourth over and swatting a huge six off Oshane Thomas over deep square leg.

But Inglis was out attempting to reverse-sweep Gudakesh Motie only to lob a catch to slip. When he departed Australia were 83 for two and in the box seat in the 12th over.

Earlier, Keacy Carty was denied a century in the West Indies innings in a run out mix-up. He looked primed for his maiden ODI century before he was badly burnt by his batting partner Hayden Walsh and was run out for 88 off 108 balls.

Bartlett, playing in his first ODI along with fellow paceman Lance Morris (0-59), had a dream start, taking the top of Justin Greaves's off-stump with a big inswinger for one and picked up Alick Athanaze in his following over, caught behind for five.

Bartlett had the ball swinging appreciably and claimed the big wicket of skipper Shai Hope, caught at first slip by Matthew Short for 12, leaving him with 3-8 in five overs.

Legspinner Adam Zampa broke a flourishing 110-run partnership when Roston Chase attempted to sweep and was bowled for 59 off 67 balls.

Carty was closing in on his century before he was needlessly run out by a poor call from Walsh.

Walsh set off for an injudicious single and Sean Abbott at mid-off threw down the stumps with Carty well out of his ground. He left the ground visibly annoyed, 12 short of his hundred.

Shamar Joseph shrugged off injury to bowl at express pace for nearly 12 overs straight in Brisbane, claiming 7-68 as West Indies stunned Australia by eight runs to get their first test win Down Under since 1997 on Sunday.

Australia had been cruising towards the victory target of 216 early on day four of the day-night second test until an injured Joseph, playing his first test series, returned to the field and shocked the world champions with a fiery showcase of fast bowling.

The 24-year-old saved his best for last, uprooting the off-stump of tailender Josh Hazlewood (0) with sheer speed before dashing across the Gabba outfield, thumping his chest in celebration with his team mates.

"I wasn't even coming to the ground this morning," the man of the series said.

Joseph retired hurt on Saturday when his right toe was struck by a Mitchell Starc yorker which ended West Indies' second innings at 193.

"(My doctor) said 'come to the ground, I have a reason'. I didn't know this was the reason but it's a good reason to win the test match for your team," Joseph said.

"Even though it's 1-1, I feel like we've won the entire series."

In the first innings, the eighth-ranked West Indies had made 311 before Australia's Pat Cummins boldly declared while still behind at 289-9 to bowl again under lights.

That decision came back to bite the team when, 30 overs into Australia's run-chase, Joseph beat Cameron Green (42) and sent Travis Head packing for a king pair.

Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey fared no better, and Joseph celebrated his second five-wicket haul, bettering his 5-94 in the Adelaide test, by exacting revenge on Starc who was caught at point for a quick 21.

New opener Steve Smith (91 not out) could only watch as the carnage unfolded around him.

"I told my skipper I would bowl until the end, until the last wicket falls. It doesn't matter how my toes are," Joseph said.

"I want to do that for my team and my country and everyone in the Caribbean."

The victory comes at an otherwise low ebb for West Indies cricket, after the islanders failed in 2023 to qualify for the 50-over World Cup for the first time.

Guyana native Joseph, who sensationally had Smith caught in Adelaide off his first ball in test cricket, has been signed by Dubai Capitals for the International League T20 tournament.

Injured pace bowler Shamar Joseph produced a stunning spell as the West Indies pulled off a remarkable eight-run win over Australia in the second test at the Gabba in Brisbane on Sunday.

Joseph, who needed scans after retiring hurt on Saturday night when he was hit on the toe by a Mitchell Starc yorker, took 7-68 on Sunday as the West Indies bowled Australia out for 207, giving the West Indies their first win in Australia since 1997.

Australia began the fourth day's play at 60-2, chasing 216 for victory and with Steve Smith and Cameron Green at the crease, they were overwhelming favourites.

Opening bowlers Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph were not particularly threatening, so 45 minutes in captain Kraigg Brathwaite threw the ball to Joseph, with almost immediate results.

Although proving expensive, Joseph's extra pace caused trouble for all the batters and the more wickets he took, the more confident the West Indies became.

He capped off a remarkable performance when he clean bowled Josh Hazlewood to end the match.

Steve Smith capped off "a pretty good day" for Australia, guiding the hosts to 60-2 at stumps on the third day of the second test against the West Indies in Brisbane on Saturday.

 

Australia need another 156 runs for victory to take a clean sweep of the two-test series with eight wickets in hand.

At stumps, Smith was on 33 with a struggling Cameron Green alongside him on 9.

Australia's hopes of taking the win, however, may be hampered by predicted heavy rain for the next two days.

Australia had wrapped up the West Indian second innings for 193 shortly after the tea break when No 11 Shamar Joseph had to retire hurt after being hit on the toe by a Mitchell Starc bouncer.

Joseph was taken for scans on Saturday night and although he hasn't fractured his toe, it is unknown whether he will bowl on Sunday.

The West Indies went into the final session six wickets down, but lost the last fours, including Joseph, for just 10 runs.

"I thought the bowling attack did exceptionally well today," Australian offspinner Nathan Lyon said.

"In pretty hot and humid conditions I thought we stuck at our job pretty well.

"We pride ourselves as a bowling unit on staying calm and building pressure. All in all, a pretty good day."

Chasing 216 for victory, Australia lost an early wicket when Usman Khawaja was caught down the leg side off Alzarri Joseph.

Marnus Labuschagne, who has had a lean summer, failed for the second time this match, edging Justin Greaves to third slip where Kevin Sinclair took a sharp catch to leave Australia 42-2.

Joseph said the West Indies were still thinking of pulling off an unlikely win.

"We still have eight wickets to get – you never know what can happen on the fourth day," he said.

"If we bowl in the right areas, we can still win this game."

On an oppressively hot and humid afternoon in Brisbane, Australia's pace bowlers were forced into three-over spells throughout the day, followed by time off the field to recover.

Every time a dangerous partnership started to develop, Australia managed to take a wicket to keep the deficit in check.

After resuming Saturday at 13-1, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and No 3 Kirk McKenzie were intent on keeping the Australians in the field as long as possible.

McKenzie in particular looked in great touch as he punished anything loose from the Australian pace attack.

Brathwaite was not as fluent and after scraping his way to 16, he played a poor shot to an innocuous Green delivery and chipped a simple catch to Labuschagne at cover.

However, he and McKenzie had put on a 50-run partnership to lay a good foundation for the visitors.

McKenzie has had a good tour and the stylish left-hander moved comfortably to 41 before he tried to sweep offspinner Nathan Lyon and was trapped leg before, leaving the West Indies 86-3.

Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge consolidated and reached the first break with few troubles.

Lyon struck again after dinner, drawing an edge from Athanaze (35) before a brilliant piece of fielding from Travis Head saw Hodge run out for 29.

Hodge moved forward and played the ball straight to Head at short leg, who flicked the ball onto the stumps and although Hodge's bat was over the line, it had bounced up and was in the air when the stumps were broken.

First innings top-scorer Joshua Da Silva didn't last long, caught by Green on the second attempt off Starc to leave the West Indies 157-6, 179 runs in front.

But any hope of setting a really big target faded with the post-tea collapse.

The West Indies tail batted superbly on Friday and followed up in commanding fashion with the ball to stun Australia, who trail in the second test by 35 runs after a top-order collapse necessitated a counter-attack at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Leading 1-0 in the two-game series, the home side recovered from 24-4 to boldly declare 22 runs behind at 289-9 in the night session, after fast bowlers Kemar Roach (3-47) and Alzarri Joseph (4-84) inflicted maximum damage.

Having been bowled out earlier in the day after Kevin Sinclair (50) lifted the visitors to 311, the Caribbean batsmen had to tough out 7.3 overs under lights to reach the day's close at 13-1.

Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (4) was caught-behind by Alex Carey off Josh Hazlewood on the last ball before stumps, leaving captain Kraigg Brathwaite unbeaten on three.

"I feel really, really good to get the fifty on my debut," Sinclair said.

"It's about sticking with the basics for us."

New opener Steve Smith, thrust into the role after David Warner's retirement, fell to Roach for six in the first over of Australia's innings when a seaming delivery was adjudged lbw on review.

But it was a double-strike by veteran Roach on the stroke of dinner to send Cameron Green (8) and Travis Head (0) on their way that sent shockwaves through the home dressing room and brought about a strategy change.

Mitchell Marsh (21) and Carey (65), who found fortune when his bails were hit but not dislodged, played at better than a run-a-ball before holing out while opener Usman Khawaja (75) set anchor.

Offspinner Sinclair (1-53) brought out a backflip when Khawaja edged to slip and the job of reducing the deficit was left to Cummins, who hammered a career-best 64 not out to provide cheer to the 29,216-strong crowd attending on Australia's national holiday.

Cricket Australia in 2021 stopped referencing "Australia Day" for matches played on Jan. 26 -- the 1788 date when the first fleet of British settlers arrived in Sydney -- after a recommendation from its Indigenous advisory committee.

Earlier, the eighth-ranked tourists antagonised the world test champions with the bat for 18 overs after resuming from 266-8 overnight.

Kavem Hodge and Joshua Da Silva put on 149 runs for the sixth wicket to lead a West Indies fightback against Australia on the first day of the second test on Thursday as the visitors reached 266-8 at stumps.

Hodge and wicketkeeper Da Silva were together at the start of the second session with the West Indies in huge trouble at 64-5.

The pair dug in and batted for over a session and a half before Da Silva was finally dismissed for 79, trapped lbw by offspinner Nathan Lyon with the score on 213.

Hodge, playing only his second test, then fell to the second new ball 12 runs later when he edged Mitchell Starc (4-68) to Steve Smith at second slip for an impressive 71.

Debutant Kevin Sinclair was not out 16 at the close, with Alzarri Joseph dismissed for an entertaining 32 off 22 balls from the last ball of the day.

Hodge and Da Silva mixed resolute defence with some exciting shot-making throughout their partnership to give their side some hope after a disappointing start to the innings.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat first on a hot day under clear skies, West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite would have been hoping to get the visitors off to a good start at the top of the order.

However, he looked unsettled and fell for four in the eighth over when he played at a Josh Hazlewood delivery outside off stump and got an edge to keeper Alex Carey.

Fellow opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul had looked more comfortable at the other end and he and an aggressive Kirk McKenzie started to move the score along.

But McKenzie, who scored 21 from 25 balls, tried one big shot too many and got a thick edge off Pat Cummins to first slip, where Usman Khawaja took a sharp chance high to his right.

Chanderpaul (21) was next to go when he edged Starc to Smith at second slip to leave the West Indies struggling at 54-3.

That was soon 57-3 when Alick Athanaze became Starc's 350th test wicket, caught behind by Carey for eight.

Khawaja got his second catch when Greaves edged Starc to first slip with the dinner break just four balls away.

But the second session belonged to the West Indies, with Hodge and Da Silva resolute in the face of the Australian attack.

The two took the West Indies almost to the second new ball, but once Da Silva fell the batting became more difficult under the lights.

When Hodge fell there was some chance the West Indies could have collapsed once again. However, Sinclair batted sensibly and Joseph swung his bat freely before edging Hazlewood to give Smith his third catch at second slip.

Australian Josh Hazlewood produced an inspired spell of seam bowling as Australia crushed the West Indies by 10 wickets in the first test at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Bowling with almost metronomic precision, Hazlewood ended with 5-35 in the second innings after at one stage having figures of 4-2.

Leading by 95 runs in the first innings, Australia dismissed the West Indies for 120 on Friday morning.

They then cruised to the winning target of 26 in under seven overs, although there was some late drama when, with the scores level, Australian opener Usman Khawaja was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the jaw by a Shamar Joseph bouncer.

There had been plenty of disquiet in Australia when the West Indies announced a touring squad missing a number of top players including former captain Jason Holder.

Only eight of the 15-man squad had played test cricket before, meaning there would have to be three debutants in the team for Adelaide.

While captain Kraigg Brathwaite and fellow opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul have formed an effective partnership at the top of the order, the next four batsmen had only three caps between them.

And with both Brathwaite and Chanderpaul failing in this test match, that inexperience showed, with only Kirk McKenzie offering much resistance to the Australian attack.

However, they will take some positives out of the match from McKenzie's batting and especially the batting and bowling of Shamar Joseph, who was playing only his sixth first-class game.

Joseph took five wickets in the first innings and scored valuable runs in both innings coming in at No 11.

After resuming on Friday on 73 for six, still 22 runs behind, much of the West Indies' faint hopes depended on experienced wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva, who was not out on 17 overnight.

But after adding one run to his overnight total Da Silva was caught on the deep fine leg boundary for the second time this match after not being able to control the hook shot, leaving his side 84 for seven.

Alzarri Joseph played well but got a faint edge to wicketkeeper Alex Carey off Mitchell Starc to fall for 16, with the West Indies 94 for eight, still one run from making Australia bat again.

Hazlewood then clean bowled Gudakesh Motie without any addition to the score, bringing newcomer Shamar Joseph to the crease, who promptly played a beautiful cover drive for four.

The free-spirited Joseph showed no fear and he and veteran Kemar Roach added 26 for the final wicket before Joseph charged offspinner Nathan Lyon and was stumped by Carey.

West Indies coach Andre Coley conceded inexperience had played a large part in the dramatic second-innings collapse that saw them slump to 19 for four.

"The learning curve has been pretty steep for some of them," Coley said.

"But if they were to sit back and some of the feedback has been, it hasn't been tremendously difficult. It has been testing.

"I think the challenge has pretty much been the consistency of the bowlers, obviously a wealth of experience in that Australian bowling attack, so their ability to stay patient, and there were times our batters played quite well."

An inspired spell of bowling from Josh Hazlewood and a brilliant attacking century from Travis Head put Australia in complete control of the first test against the West Indies in Adelaide on Thursday.

After Head smashed 119 from 134 balls to take Australia to 283 and a first-innings lead of 95, Hazlewood took four wickets for just two runs at the start of the West Indies second innings to deal a hammer blow to the visitors.

At stumps on the second day, the West Indies were 73-6, still 22 runs from making Australia bat again.

Joshua Da Silva was not out 17, with Justin Greaves dismissed off the last ball of the day's play.

Hazlewood removed the top four West Indies batsmen in a superb spell of seam bowling.

He dismissed Tagenarine Chanderpaul for a first ball duck, then in his next over he had captain Kraigg Brathwaite caught by Head at a deepish short leg.

The West Indies were 7-3 when Alick Athanaze gloved a bouncer to keeper Alex Carey, then 19-4 when Kavem Hodge edged to Steve Smith at second slip.

Kirk McKenzie and Greaves tried to rebuild the innings and took the score to 40 before McKenzie tried an expansive drive off Cameron Green, only to spoon the ball to Marnus Labuschagne at short cover.

Greaves and Da Silva batted sensibly and looked certain to take the West Indies safely to stumps, only for offspinner Nathan Lyon to trap Greaves lbw for 24.

West Indies coach Andre Coley said his young side had to adapt to Australian conditions.

"The pitches here have been very good, very different to back home, so our intent to score has always been evident," he said.

"But that has to be matched with decision-making. With more bounce the ability to leave the ball more consistently has to be part of your repertoire."

On a pitch that troubled every other batsman, Head seemed to be playing on a different surface, bringing up his seventh test century with a glorious cover drive to the boundary.

He eventually fell after making a brisk century, caught brilliantly on the boundary by Kavem Hodge off the bowling of Alzarri Joseph, but by then the damage had been done and Australia were firmly in control.

'TEARS TO MY EYES'

The Australians were expected to dominate a below-strength West Indies, who have three players on debut in this match.

But led by exciting newcomer Shamar Joseph, the visitors took regular wickets throughout the first two sessions to initially keep the Australians on the back foot.

Joseph, playing only his sixth first class match, ended with 5-94 in a magnificent test debut.

"It's an amazing feeling," Joseph said. "It brings tears to my eyes knowing that I'm on this big stage and taking a five-wicket haul in Australia means a lot to me.

"It's amazing. I'm just sticking to the basics and enjoying it."

Australia had reshuffled their batting order on the retirement of David Warner, moving Steve Smith to opener so they could bring Green back into the side.

The first part of that experiment failed when Smith fell for 12 on Wednesday, so the Australians would have been hoping for big runs from the towering Green.

But he was gone for 14 in just the second over on Thursday morning, caught by wicketkeeper Da Silva off Shamar Joseph to leave the Australians 67-3.

All the batsmen struggled with the slow pace and variable bounce of the wicket but Head rode his luck, his typically counter-attacking century included 12 fours and three sixes and proved the difference between the two sides.

Debutant Shamar Joseph gave the West Indies some hope after taking two top-order wickets during Australia's reply to the visitors' first innings total of 188 in the opening test in Adelaide Wednesday.

Australia were 59-2 at stumps, with Usman Khawaja not out 30 and Cameron Green on six.

Australia were only 129 runs behind, but with key batsmen Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne back in the pavilion.

Earlier, Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and sent the West Indies in to bat on a cool and overcast morning, a decision that proved fruitful when the visitors were reduced to 133-9.

But Joseph, playing only his sixth first class match, gave the score some respectability with a breezy 36 off only 41 balls.

The best was still to come for the 24-year-old, who came on as first change and had Smith caught at third slip with his first ball in test cricket.

He then enticed a hook shot from Labuschagne, which went straight to Gudakesh Motie at deep fine leg to leave Australia 45-2.

That could have been even better had wicketkeeper Josh Da Silva not dropped Khawaja on one, a catch he should have taken.

Earlier, Josh Hazlewood took 4-44, including his 250th test wicket, and Cummins 4-41 as Australia ran through the West Indies batting line-up.

Australia had gone into the test making only one change from the team that beat Pakistan 3-0 earlier in the summer.

Smith moved to the top of the Aussie order in place of the retired David Warner and Green was back at No 4.

It was a different story for the West Indies, who gave debuts to Joseph and allrounders Kavem Hodge and Justin Greaves.

WINDIES SKITTLED OUT

West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul began sedately, content to leave as many balls as possible.

Cummins brought himself on in the 10th over with immediate results, a fuller ball enticing Chanderpaul into an expansive drive, only to slice the ball to gully where Green used all his height to take a comfortable catch.

Cummins then removed Brathwaite with a beautiful ball that was angled in, then straightened and took the top of off stump to leave the West Indies 27-2 after the first hour.

Alick Athanaze and Kirk McKenzie then steadied the ship and looked to take the West Indies to lunch at two down, but with the score on 52, Athanaze opted to leave a Hazlewood delivery only to see the ball cannon into his off stump.

It was Hazlewood's 250th wicket in test cricket, meaning the four main bowlers in Australia's attack – Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Cummins and Nathan Lyon – have all reached that milestone.

Hazlewood continued after lunch with the wickets of Hodge (12), McKenzie (50) and Greaves (5) to leave the West Indies reeling at 108-6.

That became 132-7 when Cummins had Da Silva caught at deep square leg for six, before one run later they lost both Motie and Alzarri Joseph.

But Shamar Joseph rescued the situation, showing no fear as he reached his highest first class score, with Kemar Roach offering solid support.

The West Indies needed to make an early breakthrough and they put the disappointment of missing Khawaja behind them with the important wicket of Smith.

There were some Australian nerves jangling when Labuschagne fell, but Khawaja and Green saw the home side safely to stumps.

Australia head into the two-test series against the West Indies beginning in Adelaide Wednesday as the hottest of favourites, but the visitors insist they are ready to shock the reigning world test champions.

For the Australians, the biggest challenge has been deciding on a replacement for veteran opener David Warner, who retired after their win over Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground earlier this month.

They have settled on moving Steve Smith up the order and bringing back towering allrounder Cameron Green to bat at No 4, where he slots in for the Western Australia state side.

The rest of the team is unchanged from the one that beat Pakistan 3-0 in the just-completed series.

Smith said he had lobbied to replace Warner at the top of the order, adding that it allowed the selectors to pick Green at No 4 instead of asking him to open.

"They (selectors) were obviously very keen to get Cameron (Green) in the side as well and play our best six batters, and for me it didn't sit right to have him come in and bat up top," Smith told reporters earlier this week.

"I've played for a long time and I'm an experienced player, and I think it's something I should have done."

For the West Indies, however, it is a completely different picture, with seven uncapped players in their 15-man squad.

They will also be missing former captain Jason Holder and fellow allrounder Kyle Mayers, who have both chosen to sit out the tour to concentrate on the T20 format.

The once mighty West Indies have not won a test in Australia since 1997 and were soundly beaten when they toured last summer.

The only members of the squad with test match experience are captain Kraigg Brathwaite, vice-captain Alzarri Joseph, Alick Athanaze, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva, Gudakesh Motie, Kirk McKenzie and Kemar Roach.

Joseph said the West Indies had taken inspiration from how an unheralded Pakistan had pushed the Australians and even had chances to win two of the tests.

"We're here to win two test matches, we're not just here to play," Joseph said.

"We had a look at some of the things Pakistan did and we're going to try to implement some of them, but we all have different ways of doing things.

"For us, it's about being brave, being positive."

Joseph conceded the visitors were underdone in the test arena, having played only six since their last visit to Australia just over 12 months ago.

Australia, by contrast, have played 17.

"I think last time our lengths were a bit short," Joseph said.

"We just need to be a bit fuller and stay patient. Basically it's different to the Caribbean, a bit more bounce.

"I've been coming from a lot of white-ball cricket so for me, it's getting back into red-ball lengths and holding that for a long period."

Steve Smith said Sunday he felt obligated to step up and replace David Warner as Australia's test opener, but also admitted it suited him because he got bored waiting to come in at four.

The 34-year-old veteran was a surprise pick to do the job ahead of openers Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw after Warner bowed out of test cricket this month.

He will pad up in his new role for the first time in the opening test of a two-match series against the West Indies in Adelaide, which starts on Wednesday.

"They (selectors) were obviously very keen to get Cameron (Green) in the side as well and play our best six batters, and for me it didn't sit right to have him come in and bat up top," he told reporters.

"I've played for a long time and I'm an experienced player, and I think it's something I should have done."

The highly rated Green has been sidelined recently by a resurgent Mitchell Marsh, who has assumed the allrounder role.

Shifting Smith up the order, rather than opting for a specialist opener, allowed selectors to bring Green back primarily as a batsman.

Smith revealed he had been mulling the idea as far back as the Ashes in England last year, but the prospect only crystallised during the third test against Pakistan in Sydney this month.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity of getting in and facing the new ball," he said.

"It's something that isn't really foreign to me. I've batted on numerous occasions where I've come in early doors and I batted at No 3 for quite a while."

Former skipper Smith, who has played 105 tests and accumulated 9 514 runs, also admitted that coming in early suited him because "I don't like waiting to bat".

"I actually don't like watching cricket that much, believe it or not," he said.

"I'd prefer to be out there batting. It gets a bit boring sitting there (with the pads on) but I don't have to do that any more."

Left-hander Shimron Hetmyer has been left out of the West Indies ODI and Twenty20 squads for the upcoming white-ball series in Australia.

West Indies, who co-host June's Twenty20 World Cup with the United States, named squads for both the short-form series on Friday after beating England in last month's ODI and T20 series.

Hetmyer had a poor series against England and was dropped after scores of 1 and 2 in the opening T20 games of the series.

Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford will miss the ODI series, as they are being allowed to play in T20 franchise cricket, but will be part of a full-strength squad named for the T20 games.

Shai Hope will captain the ODI squad which includes first call-ups for Grenadian batsman Teddy Bishop and Guyanese wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach.

There are recalls to the ODI squad for allrounders Justin Greaves and Kavem Hodge and legspinner Hayden Walsh.

Greaves returns after missing the recent series against England following a hamstring injury in November in the regional Super 50 Cup, where he scored 403 runs in seven innings at an average of 80.59 for the Leeward Islands.

In the T20 squad, skippered by Rovman Powell, Alzarri Joseph, who was rested for the final two games against England, comes back into the team to replace Matthew Forde.

"For the T20I series, this forms part of our crucial preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup where we are hosts. We are hoping to build on strong overall performances against India and England and to keep improving as we approach the major tournament," said Cricket West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes.

After the two-test series, which starts on Tuesday, the three-match ODI series starts on February 2 and then the three T20 games begin a week later.

West Indies will blood at least four debutants in the first test against Australia next month after naming seven uncapped players in a 15-man squad for the two-match series.

Languishing at eighth in the world rankings, the Caribbeans' hopes of ending a 20-year losing streak against Australia appear faint with allrounders Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers electing to skip the series to play franchise T20 cricket.

Fast bowler Jayden Seales, meanwhile, is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

"The squad has been affected by the unavailability of some key players," lead selector Desmond Haynes said in a statement.

"However, we have had a very strong red-ball program being run over the past year, which has unearthed significant talent throughout the region."

The uncapped players in the Kraigg Brathwaite-captained squad are batsman Zachary McCaskie, wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach, allrounders Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge and Kevin Sinclair; and fast bowlers Akeem Jordan and Shamar Joseph.

Australia's least experienced player in the 11 that thrashed Pakistan by 360 runs in the first test in Perth on Sunday is 26-test wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

The West Indies series starts at Adelaide Oval on January 17 before moving to the Gabba in Brisbane from January 25.

Australia completed their seventh consecutive whitewash of the West Indies in tests in the last home summer with wins in Perth and Adelaide.

The Caribbeans' last test win over Australia came in their 3-1 home series loss in 2003, while their last victory in Australia was in 1997.
