South Africa reached their maiden final thanks to a spectacular rout of England, bouncing back from a 10-wicket defeat against the same opposition in their opening fixture.

But she is the only South African in the top ten. India have three players in those ranks-Smriti Mandhana (second), Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur - each adding depth to the hosts’ batting blueprint.

De Klerk’s ability to accelerate late in the innings and absorb pressure has been pivotal in turning stumbles into surges.

Hosts India face South Africa in the final in Mumbai on Sunday, with both teams hoping to win the women's one-day showpiece for the first time in its 52-year history.

India have been runners-up twice, in 2005 and 2017, and reached their third final after beating seven-time champions Australia in a thriller.

"Last time when we reached the final and came back to India, we saw a big change," Kaur told reporters.

"Women's cricket moved ahead and we saw many girls on the ground. So I am sure that if we win this final, we will see many more changes and we will see more cricket, not only on the international level but also on the domestic level."

"So I think we are really looking forward to that moment when we will see women's cricket in a more serious manner and we will see more girls (playing)," she said.

Indian players like Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have become household names in the world's most populous nation since the Women's Premier League T20 tournament began in 2023.

Jemimah Rodrigues played a champion's knock with an unbeaten 127 to help India chase down a record 339 against Australia in Thursday's semifinal.

"But at the same time, I think it puts a lot of pressure on them as well. So yeah, I think it sort of plays in our favour, hopefully."

Kaur said a new winner will be good for the sport.

"Because of that we are seeing more excitement," she said. "And for us to reach the final is also very special, not only for us but for the Indian fans who have been a big support for us."

It is a regular net session at a cricket academy in New Delhi, but the joy among the colourful jersey-clad young girls is unmistakable.

They have a shimmering new source of inspiration, after the Indian women's team pulled off a stunning victory against favourites Australia in the women's World Cup semifinal on Thursday.

Batter Jemimah Rodrigues slammed an unbeaten 127 as India chased down a record 339 at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium to secure a place in Sunday's final against South Africa.

"There is always that one thing that inspires a generation," said 19-year-old Armeet Kaur, a batting allrounder who has played for the Delhi state team.

"Jemmy's innings yesterday was like that. It will really change things."

Twelve-year-old Ridhima Chaudhary was star-struck.

"It made me feel like I have to play like them," she said.

The sixth-grade student said she has already been working towards that goal – training three hours a day, five days a week.

"My parents also say that cricket academy is as important as school," she added.

Coach Sumit Poria called the victory a "turning point" for the sport in India.

"The way the crowd cheered for the team – it's a shot in the arm like nothing else before," he said.

While the overall infrastructure has improved in recent years, a big victory like the one on Thursday "will go a long way in convincing parents" to let young women pursue cricket seriously, Poria added.

PRIZE PURSE EXCEEDS MEN'S 

The eight-nation tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, has already broken records.

Data released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and streaming platform JioHotstar showed the first 13 matches drew more than 60 million viewers – five times higher than the 2022 edition.

The India–Pakistan clash earlier this month became the most-watched women's international match ever, with 28.4 million viewers.

That's still a small figure for the world's most populous nation, but it shows the rise in popularity of women's cricket.

India, twice runners-up, are chasing a maiden title in the 50-over World Cup that now boasts a record $13.88 million prize purse – eclipsing even the men's total from two years ago.

In New Delhi, the excitement is tangible. Replica women's team jerseys sold out online just hours after India secured their final berth.

The popularity is being matched by economic clout.

The wider sports market is booming in India, with its estimated value to surge to $130 billion by 2030, according to a 2024 report by Deloitte and Google.

The 2023 launch of the Women's Premier League generated about $700 million in franchise and media rights for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The move toward pay parity, pushed by then-BCCI secretary and now ICC chairman Jay Shah, has further boosted the women's game.

'VERY BIG MOMENT' 

"The rise of digital platforms has transformed sports consumption... occurring alongside a growing diversification of India's sports fans," the Deloitte report said.

And women are a key part of that.

"Women's sports are on the rise," it said. "Fans are increasingly interested in women's sports."

Whether or not India lift the trophy on Sunday, the young cricketers at Delhi's training nets say the impact is already beyond measure.

"When I started playing six years ago, there were only the men to get inspired by," said 18-year-old Ishita Singh. "But now there's the women's team too."

Veteran Indian sports journalist Sharda Ugra called the win "a very big moment".

"It will make the game leapfrog another level in India in terms of attention and being a viable career option for so many girls who want to take part in sport," she said.

"Already there is a mass of talent burgeoning in women's cricket in India. This will make that five times bigger, whatever happens in the final."

India's women cricketing stars, including Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, have become household names, attracting major sponsorships and wide media coverage.

There is a big market to tap into.

"Women now comprise 236 million fans – or 36 precent – of the fanbase," the study estimated.

"This debunks the notion of a male-only fanbase – and (shows) women's fast-growing influence in sports."

India's newest cricket star, Jemimah Rodrigues, overcame anxiety and tears to lead her country into the women's World Cup final with a sublime century against Australia.

The 25-year-old batter scored 127 not out as India chased down a record 339 at Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium, securing a place in Sunday's final against South Africa.

India have been to the one-day final twice before but have never won it.

Rodrigues, who was dropped for the World Cup in 2022, said she has struggled mentally throughout the tournament.

She was not an automatic choice for this edition and was even dropped from the league game against England after a string of modest scores.

"I have almost cried every day through this tour," Rodrigues said after the semifinal victory on Thursday in her home city, breaking down.

"Not doing well mentally, going through anxiety. I knew I had to show up and God took care of everything," said the batter, after her third ODI century.

A devout Christian born in Mumbai, Rodrigues said she was told just five minutes before the match to bat at No 3.

She responded with what she called her "best knock ever", forging a 167-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who made 89.

Harmanpreet fell in the 36th over but Rodrigues stood firm in humid conditions, pausing in between and even talking to herself during the 134-ball marathon.

"I was praying, I was talking to God because I feel I have a personal relationship with him and when I cannot carry myself, he always carries me," Rodrigues said.

"I knew how important this match was and I wanted to be there to finish it off."

She sank to her knees in tears after Amanjot Kaur hit the winning boundary and later embraced her emotional parents on the sidelines.

'MENTAL RESILIENCE'

Rodrigues has been a dependable – if not spectacular – presence for India since her white-ball debut in 2018, scoring 1 725 ODI runs at an average of over 35, mostly as a middle-order batter.

Harmanpreet praised her teammate's composure in the heat of battle.

"Jemimah is someone who always wants to do really well for the team," said Harmanpreet.

"She is very calculative and wants to take responsibility. We always trust her and today was a very special knock."

Former Indian men's captain Sunil Gavaskar said Rodrigues's experience in overseas leagues had helped her develop a mature approach to batting.

"She has got some experience," Gavaskar told the India Today channel. "She knows how to pace an innings. She has the ability."

Australia, unbeaten until the semifinal and strong favourites to retain their crown, were left reeling by Rodrigues's masterclass.

Their captain Alyssa Healy said the seven-time champions "let ourselves down" and were "un-Australian" in not being as clinical as they would normally be.

But she reserved special praise for the hero of the hour, Rodrigues.

"Her resilience – her mental resilience – out there to get her team over the line was exemplary, so full credit to her," she said.

Amanjot Kaur hit the winning boundary to take India into their third final of an ODI World Cup, triggering emotional scenes.

The 25-year-old Rodrigues sank to her knees in tears while her teammates rushed to celebrate the sensational upset.

"This is the greatest day in the history of Indian women's cricket," veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle said on X.

Virat Kohli, the star batsman from the men's team, called Rodrigues' display the "standout performance".

"A true display of resilience, belief and passion," he said on social media.

Former men's captain Sunil Gavaskar called the victory "exhilarating" and "absolutely thrilling", especially because they were clear underdogs.

"They'd lost to three big guns in the tournament and then to come back the way they have just tells you the determination of this team," the batting great said on TV channel India Today.

"So clearly you can say that the Indian women's team has definitely come of age."

India lost three successive matches in the league phase before clinching the last semifinal spot, in contrast to Australia's unbeaten run into the final four.

India were in trouble at 59-2 in reply to Australia's massive 338 when Rodrigues turned the game on its head in a 167-run third-wicket partnership with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who hit 89.

Rodrigues, a middle-order batter who had a modest start in the tournament and was dropped in the league game against England, was promoted to No 3 and delivered when it mattered.

"When you are left and then come back into the team the pressure is way too high... today's innings was a marvellous innings," said Gavaskar.

That was echoed by former national cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who called it an "innings of a lifetime".

"Fantastic to watch free-flowing cricket by Jemimah Rodrigues," he said on X.

"In and out from the team but she never stopped believing."

India have twice been runners-up, in 2005 and 2017.

In 2017 they beat Australia in the semifinals before losing to England.

Stunned captain Alyssa Healy says Australia let themselves down after their reign as one-day world champions was brought to a shuddering halt by hosts India.

The world's most dominant side put together an imposing 338 in their semifinal in Mumbai on Thursday, with the odds heavily in favour of them winning.

But fielding mistakes coupled with Jemimah Rodrigues's glorious unbeaten 127 saw India pull off a record chase to set up a final against South Africa.

"Just disappointed," said Healy.

"Ultimately we just weren't sharp enough in all three facets to give ourselves the opportunity to win that semifinal.

"Not taking anything away from the Indian performance, (but) there's an element of we let ourselves down."

It was seven-time champions Australia's first loss in the ODI World Cup since 2017, when India beat them in the semifinal.

The defeat also revived bitter memories of being knocked out at the same stage of the Twenty20 World Cup last year as three-time defending champions.

Wicketkeeper Healy, playing at her last ODI World Cup, admitted they failed to capitalise on their opportunities, with a key moment coming when she dropped Rodrigues on 82.

Tahlia McGrath then repeated the blunder on 106.

"It feels a little bit un-Australian to not be as clinical as we normally are, and knowing how well we played at this World Cup," said Healy.

"I think we're playing some unbelievable cricket, and that's why it doesn't quite feel right sitting here at the losing end, not getting to Sunday's fixture.

"I simply say that because of the different contributions that we've had right throughout, it wasn't just one person making all the runs and taking all the wickets.

"I think the team contributed equally right throughout, which put us in a really nice place heading into this final series."

Despite the devastating loss that left a team that has long dominated women's cricket without a world title, allrounder Ellyse Perry said she did not expect a major overhaul of the side.

"Some days you just don't quite play well enough... but at the end of the day, I think hopefully there's a lot of joy in our cricket," she told cricket.com.au.

"People enjoy watching us play and there's more opportunity ahead."

The pair rotated strike, picked gaps, and accelerated with precision, putting Australia under sustained pressure.

“Today was not about my hundred - it was about making India win,” Rodrigues said after being named Player of the Match.

Australia, meanwhile, were left to reflect on missed chances and a late collapse.

Reflecting on her mammoth effort, Wolvaardt said: “We identified early that it was a decent wicket, so wanted to keep going.

“I wanted to go until the 40th over and then, while I was there, thought I might as well try to whack a few.”

Left heartbroken by the same opponents at this stage of the last two tournaments, the Proteas had also been skittled for 69 in the round robin stage in a ten-wicket humiliation this time around.

But their remarkable turnaround means they will meet the winner of the other semifinal clash between world-leading Australia and hosts India, which takes place in Navi Mumbai on Thursday.

Beaten England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt reflected: “We have come a long way since the summer. A different side since then and have learnt a lot about ourselves. This will hurt but hopefully, in time, we can take the learnings from it and move forward.

“It's really exciting where we can go but to beat the best teams, you have to be at your very best.”

CLASSY KAPP ON FIRE

Kapp made a dream start with the ball, bowling England opener Amy Jones through the gate with just the second delivery of the innings as they floundered in their pursuit of 320.

It went from dream to perfection when she repeated the dose, as former captain Heather Knight played on to leave the English in disarray at 0-2.

That became 1-3 when Ayabonga Khaka wasn’t to be outdone at the other end, tempting Tammy Beaumont into a drive that she edged through to Sinalo Jafta.

But Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey did rebuild, helped by the wound-up Kapp leaving the field with a bout of cramp.

And the pair were given two lives in one ball with the score on 63 when Nondumiso Shangase - on for Kapp - dropped Capsey’s heave down the ground on the long-on boundary, only for her return throw to come within an inch of running out Sciver-Brunt as Sune Luus whipped off the bails.

The 100 partnership came up and both reached half-centuries to give England a foothold, only for Capsey to cloth Luus straight to Nadine de Klerk at mid-off to leave them 108-4.

Kapp’s return looked to be a huge moment in the game. And so it proved, as the 35-year-old nibbled one away from the dangerous Sciver-Brunt, who edged behind to end her 76-ball stay on a score of 64.

Then went Sophia Dunkley in almost identical fashion before Charlie Dean feathered through to Jafta with her feet in concrete, giving the fired-up Kapp her fifth scalp and a hat-trick ball opportunity.

Sophie Ecclestone resisted it, having earlier returned her nation’s best bowling figures of 4-44, but fell slog-sweeping Nonkululeko Mlaba into the hands of Annerie Dercksen.

Veteran Danni Wyatt-Hodge (34) hoisted De Klerk straight down the throat of substitute fielder Tumi Sekhukhune at deep backward square leg to leave South Africa on the brink.

De Klerk picked up her second to win it in the 43rd over when she had Linsey Smith caught for 27 to start the party for those in green.

SA CAPTAIN GOES BIG

Earlier Wolvaardt had dazzled with her game-changing century, almost batting through the innings in reaching 169 as her side recorded the second-highest score in Women’s World Cup matches.

Driving repeatedly through the covers early on, the captain changed tack in the death overs with a flurry of legside boundaries including four sixes.

A thin edge through to fine leg for four was hardly the typical Wolvaardt style for such a feat, but that's merely a footnote in the career of a textbook and she more than made up for it.

Anchoring the Proteas innings en route to their route of England, the skipper notched up her 10th ton, hitting four sixes and 20 fours for her 169 off 143.

On a day of firsts for the team, it was a personal first for Wolvaardt too – her first century against England.

Fastidious with the bat and unflinchingly unfussed and with a cover drive that would make Kumar Sangakkarra blush, the South African captain has been breaking records since her teenage years.

Still only 26 years old, Wolvaardt is the second fastest to the feat and sixth highest run-scorer of all time in the women’s one-day format and the only South African woman to make it past the 4 000-run mark.

She tends to shrug off the plaudits, believing it is her duty rather than a chore, her feats make it hard not to take note. Just four months after making her international debut, she became the youngest South African - male all female and in all formats - to score a century. That record still remains and there will be more to come.

Testament to her tenacity is that she has been unburnt by captaincy. Rather than suffer, her batting has excelled and in 2023, she scored three unbeaten centuries in 12 matches, including her career best of 184 against Sri Lanka.

Whenever the team has had their back against the wall, it has been Wolvaardt who has led from the front and South Africans will be hoping she does so for many years to come.

South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt on Tuesday said the "calmest team" will emerge on top in their semifinal clash with England at the Women's World Cup.

The Proteas won five of seven matches in the league phase to take third spot below England in the standings, and the two face each other again in Guwahati on Wednesday.

"I think for me tomorrow it will be just about keeping everyone as calm as possible," Wolvaardt told reporters on the eve of the first semifinal.

"I think the calmest team out there will most likely win. I think 50 overs is a very long time and it is very easy to let the pressure of a semifinal get to you."

South Africa are chasing their first World Cup title, having fallen short in the latter stages of previous tournaments.

They were beaten by England in the semifinals of the last two ODI World Cups in 2017 and 2022, and although they reached the final of the last two T20 World Cups (2023 and 2024), the trophy still eludes them.

"That semifinal loss against England was four years ago so I think we were a totally different looking side, they have got a lot of different players as well," Wolvaardt said of their defeat in 2022.

"It's sort of a fresh opportunity and it starts from zero, so I am looking forward to the challenge and hopefully I am able to learn from those (T20) semifinal victories that we have got and stay calmer under pressure."

Led by Nat Sciver-Brunt, England's only defeat so far at this edition of the tournament was to Ashes rivals Australia.

They are favourites against a South Africa team that was bundled out for 97 by Australia in their last game. That heavy defeat ended a run of five straight wins for South Africa, who suffered a 10-wicket thrashing by England in their tournament opener.

"I am proud of this group, the way they have stuck together," England coach Charlotte Edwards said. "We have sort of five weeks away now and our best cricket is yet to come and that's a really exciting place for us as a group."

Defending champions Australia will face hosts India in the second semifinal on Thursday in the outskirts of Mumbai. The final is on Sunday.

“We've had a great tournament so far. As a group, we're trying to focus on the positives, sticking to our game plans, and doing what we do best. If we just keep playing the way that we have, we'll have a really good shot at winning tomorrow.

In the current 50-over campaign, South Africa began their tournament with a heavy 10-wicket defeat to England at the same venue. They then bounced back in outstanding fashion, securing five consecutive victories against New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, before losing to defending champions Australia in a top-of-the-table contest.

Despite the challenging moments, Bavuma remains confident in the squad's performance and spirit.

“I’m super proud. I think the ladies have had a really good run to get to this stage of the tournament—the knockout stages,” he said.

“Now it’s the business end of the campaign, where everything counts. I’m sure they’ll go into the game with a lot of confidence.”

“Yes, they had a tough encounter with England earlier on, but that means nothing when it comes to the playoffs.”

“I think in a World Cup campaign, you’re never going to be at your best all the time—there’s almost a science to losing, and sometimes that makes sense,” the captain explained.

“From a captain’s point of view, the key is motivating the players to perform as close to their best as possible.”

“Nothing really changes from that perspective; you don’t want to start doing things differently.”

Rain once again played spoilsport in the Women's Cricket World Cup as the final league match between India and Bangladesh was abandoned at Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Co-hosts India got some match practise ahead of their semifinal against holders Australia but heavy downpour in the western Indian city left them with a no result.

Chasing a revised target of 126 in 27 overs, India were 57-0 in 8.4 overs with Smriti Mandhana (34) and Amanjot Kaur (15) unbeaten when rain had the final say at the DY Patil Stadium.

It was the sixth match of the 50-over women's marquee event to be abandoned due to rain, including five washouts in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.

Kaur opened the innings for India after regular opener Pratika Rawal limped off the field when she twisted her ankle while fielding.

Indian bowlers led by left-arm spinner Radha Yadav and her 3-30 restricted Bangladesh to 119-9 in 27 overs.

India opted to field first after rain reduced the match to 43-overs-a-side but after play resumed Bangladesh reached 39-2 in 12.2 overs when a heavy shower again interrupted play.

After two hours and 14 minutes, play resumed with overs cut down further and Bangladesh kept losing wickets after skipper Nigar Sultana was run-out by a direct throw from Radha at backward point.

Sharmin Akhter (36) and Sobhana Mostary, who smashed 26 off 21 balls, attempted to hit back but Radha broke through to dismiss Mostary and took a wicket in each of her next two overs.

Fellow left-arm orthodox Shree Charani took two wickets and combined with Radha to make Bangladesh finish on a below-par total.

England will face South Africa in the first semifinal on Wednesday in Guwahati.

An emotional Sophie Devine was given a guard of honour as the New Zealand captain played her last one-day international in Sunday's eight-wicket loss to England at the Women's World Cup, ending an ODI career spanning 19 years and 159 matches.

Allrounder Devine, 36, made her debut in October 2006 and is one of three women to complete the double of scoring 4 000 runs and taking 100 wickets in the 50-over format, along with Stafanie Taylor and Ellyse Perry.

Devine, who also represented New Zealand in field hockey before focusing on cricket, led the country to victory in last year's Twenty20 World Cup. She will continue to play in the 20-over format.

"It was about enjoying it today and going back to the roots of 19 years ago and why I play," said Devine, who scored 23 runs and dismissed Heather Knight as New Zealand ended their World Cup campaign in the group stage.

Devine scored nine centuries and 18 fifties, amassing 4 279 runs and 111 wickets in the format. The white-ball specialist, known for her heavy hitting, became the first woman to hit nine sixes in an ODI innings when she scored 93 runs against Pakistan in just 41 balls in 2017.

She also jointly holds the record for scoring the fastest fifty in women's T20 internationals with Australia's Phoebe Litchfield, both having completed half-centuries in just 18 balls.

"Enjoy it while it lasts but realise cricket is just a game. Not fully done just yet so sure I'll be annoying people around the grounds," Devine added.

England recorded a eight-wicket win to beat New Zealand in their ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 clash at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The result saw England leap South Africa in the second position after their fifth win of the campaign which took their tally to 11 points. Meanwhile, New Zealand slipped to sixth after their fourth defeat.

Chasing 169, England made it look effortless. Amy Jones (86*) anchored the innings with a composed knock well supported by Tammy Beaumont (40) and Heather Knight (33). For New Zealand, Leah Tahuhu and Sophie Devine - playing her final ODI - picked up a wicket each.

England openers Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont provided the team with a solid start in their ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 clash against New Zealand with 169 to chase.

Jones and Beaumont put on a 75-run partnership for the opening stand to keep the pressure on New Zealand's bowlers before Leah Tahuhu struck with the wicket of Beaumont. Beaumont was struck on the pads while taking a big stride to defend and the umpire wasted no time in giving her out.

After New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat, England produced a strong fightback to bundle New Zealand out for 168 in under 40 overs during their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup clash. Georgia Plimmer (43) was the top scorer while Melie Kerr (35) and Sophie Devine (23) also made vital contributions but once the trio departed, the White Ferns struggled to get going as they lost regular wickets.

Linsey Smith (3/30) ended as the top performer with the ball. She was well supported by Alice Capsey (2/31), Charlie Dean (1/21) and Sophie Ecclestone (1/4), who together choked the scoring rate and ran through the middle order. In total, England’s spinners took seven of the nine wickets while captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (2/34) also contributed.

For much of the first half, it looked like New Zealand were in control after recovering from the early loss of Suzie Bates. Georgia Plimmer and Amelia Kerr steadied the innings with a solid 68-run stand for the second wicket, taking their side to 89/1 and laying the platform for a competitive total.

However, the game completely changed once that partnership was broken. From 89/1, New Zealand collapsed dramatically, losing nine wickets for just 79 runs and failing to even bat out their 50 overs. They ended up with their lowest total of this World Cup.

England made some early breakthroughs in their ICC Women's Cricket World Cup match against New Zealand in Vizag as star spinner Sophie Ecclestone suffered an injury scare.

Ecclestone was forced from the field after the second over with a shoulder concern following a dive in the field. She was looked at by medical staff, but returned to the field after the opening drinks break.

She returned to the bowling crease and claimed the big wicket of Brooke Halliday. However she had to leave the field post that for further treatment. The left arm spinner experienced more discomfort and as a precaution took no further part in England's bowling innings.

Alice Capsey further piled on the pressure with a brilliant catch and bowled to dismiss Maddy Green, while New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine fell to her England counterpart.

England’s spinners finally found their rhythm after the 25-over mark, helping the team restrict New Zealand to under 200 despite a sloppy start.

The White Ferns are aiming to send out Sophie Devine on a high note in what will be her final ODI for her country.

New Zealand are keen to finish their frustrating tournament in winning fashion so they overtake Sri Lanka and claim fifth place on the standings.

The reigning World Cup champions have locked in a date with India in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, and the planning for that match has already begun.

Australia are hoping to regain captain Alyssa Healy for their knockout semifinal clash against India at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup on Thursday.

The Aussies defeated South Africa by seven wickets in Indore on Saturday and have some valuable time off before their semifinal contest against the tournament hosts.

Those extra days will provide Healy the chance to recover from her calf injury and Australia coach Shelley Nitschke is hoping her skipper will be fit to feature.

"She wasn't quite up to it tonight but she'll continue to be assessed," Nitschke said.

"We're really hopeful for the semi, but still a few days to play out before that. And we're hopeful again, she'll just continue to be assessed the closer we get to that."

Australia registered a three-wicket victory over India during the league stage of the World Cup, with Healy leading the way with a brilliant innings of 142 as the Aussies chased down their mammoth victory target of 331 with one over remaining.

NITSCHKE ON KING

Spinner Alana King went wicketless in that contest and only bowled six overs as India's batters scored freely against her, with Nitschke admitting she may use the right-armer differently this time around.

"I think it's just sort of seeing when the game plays out," the Australian coach said of King following her seven-wicket haul against the Proteas.

"She obviously doesn't come on a lot in the Powerplay. So, once you sort of get through that, it's then about the batters that are in the matchups and the stage of the game and who's going to be the best person to bowl."

And while India will have a parochial home crowd cheering them on in the knockout semifinal in Navi Mumbai, the venue holds no fears for the Aussies following their 2-1 T20I series triumph over Harmanpreet Kaur's side at the venue at the start of last year.

“We have played a lot at that ground and against India," Australia vice-captain Tahlia McGrath said.

"It’s a knockout game, you have to be on. Qualifying, job one done, now to job two – the knockouts.”

The pathway to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 summit clash becomes clear after Australia’s win over South Africa in their final group-stage game.

Australia ensured a top-spot finish with a thumping win over South Africa in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 clash.

A triumph for the defending champions confirms that they will play hosts India (fourth in the standings) in the second semifinal of the competition on October 30 at Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

The fixture will mark the first occasion of the two teams featuring in the Cricket World Cup semifinal since their clash in the final four stage of the tournament back in 2017.

Meanwhile, South Africa will now lock horns against England in the other semifinal at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on 29 October.

While the Proteas currently occupy the second position in the points table, England are third with a game in hand.

The winners of both semifinals will play each other for the Cricket World Cup trophy on 2 November.

RECORD-BREAKING KING

Earlier on Saturday in Indore, the defending champions chased down the target of 98 with seven wickets in hand, after a spectacular record-breaking bowling display from Alana King.

The win marked their sixth in the league stage to go with a shared point from their washout against Sri Lanka.

The seven-time winners remain the only unbeaten team at this year’s marquee tournament. In their previous meeting against India in Indore during the league stage, Australia had chased down a record total to solidify their position in the standings.

Meanwhile, India walk into the semis on the back of an all-round display against New Zealand that punched their ticket to the knockouts.

The hosts will face Bangladesh on Sunday to mark the end of their league stage campaign. England on the other hand, will face off against New Zealand before the semis.

Australia’s women’s cricket team delivered a commanding performance to defeat South Africa by seven wickets in a one-sided ICC Women’s World Cup encounter at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Saturday.

The star of the show was legspinner Alana King, whose sensational spell of 7-18 in seven overs not only dismantled the South African batting lineup but also etched her name into the record books, after Australia had sent the Proteas in to bat first.

“It was not the way we wanted to end the group stages. We have done well in this tournament. It is not the worst thing in the world and it was a decent wicket to bat on, but King was brilliant, she bowled very well,” said Laura Wolvaardt.

King’s figures are now the best ever by an Australian in one-day internationals (ODIs) and the finest bowling performance in Women’s World Cup history. Her devastating spell left South Africa reeling, as they were bundled out for a paltry 97 in just 24 overs.

“I was expecting it to slide on a little bit more with the drizzle that was around in the first innings, but I was happy with what I extracted,” said King post-match.

South Africa’s innings never really got going. Only three batters managed to reach double figures. Wolvaardt provided a glimmer of hope with a brisk 31 off 25 balls, laced with seven boundaries. She shared an opening stand of 32 with Tazmin Brits, who could only manage six runs before being trapped LBW by Kim Garth (5-2-21-1).

“I am timing it well, but we will have to forget about today and focus on the semifinal,” added the South African captain.

PROTEAS STRUGGLE WITH THE BAT

Wolvaardt was the first to fall, chipping a delivery from Megan Schutt (5-2-21-1) straight to King to short mid-wicket. From there, the innings unravelled rapidly. Suné Luus (6) was caught at mid-wicket by Annabel Sutherland off King, while Annarie Derckson (5) was bowled comprehensively.

“It was good fun and pretty awesome,” said Australia’s captain, Tahlia McGrath. “I just wanted to get the ball in her hand and she was relentless. I am super happy for her”, added the Australian skipper.

Marizanne Kapp fell for a duck, caught at backward point by Garth off King, with Chloe Tryon following immediately, gifting King a double-wicket maiden by hitting straight to short mid-wicket for a first-ball duck.

“It was down to variation and I was just trying to give it a rip and get as much turn as I could,” added player of the match King.

Masabata Klaas was bowled for four, and although Sinalo Jafta tried to counterattack with an entertaining 29 off 17 balls (including seven boundaries), she too was bowled by King. Nadine de Klerk (14), who added 21 runs with Jafta, met the same fate. The innings ended with Ayabonga Khaka being bowled by Ashleigh Gardner (4-0-19-1), leaving Nonkululeko Mlaba stranded on 1 not out.

Australia’s bowlers were clinical and disciplined, conceding just one wide in the entire innings.

“We tweaked our plans a little bit, stayed calm and then took crucial wickets,” added McGrath.

In reply, South Africa briefly threatened to make a contest of it. Kapp (4-3-11-1) struck early, having Phoebe Litchfield caught at first slip by Tryon for five. Klaas (3-0-14-1) then removed Ellyse Perry for a duck with a stunning catch by De Klerk at backward point.

However, any hopes of a South African comeback were dashed by a composed and fluent partnership between Georgia Voll (38 not out) and Beth Mooney (42). The pair added 76 runs for the third wicket in just 67 balls, taking the game away from the visitors.

Voll carried her bat to the finish, striking seven boundaries from 38 balls. Mooney was the aggressor, with a fluent 42 off 41 deliveries, striking six fours before being dismissed by De Klerk (3-0-13-1), caught by Wolvaardt at short extra-cover just before the target was reached.

“We wanted to bat with some intent in the chase. Few lost a few early wickets but it was awesome to get the job done and move on to semifinals,” ended McGrath.

Annabel Sutherland came in and finished the job in style, hitting two boundaries in her four-ball cameo to seal the win. Australia reached the target in just 16.5 overs, ending on 98 for 3.

Australia will now face India in the second semifinal on Thursday, while the Proteas will face off against England, a team they lost to 10 wickets in their tournament opener, on Wednesday in the first semifinal.
