Paterson four-for puts SA ‘A’ on top

Dane Paterson’s excellent four-wicket haul ensured South Africa A (SA ‘A’) assumed control on day two of the third four-day match against West Indies A at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

The Western Province fast bowler took 4-34 to help dismiss the visitors for 126 in 42.5 overs and secure a first-innings lead of 148. Hardus Viljoen also impressed by grabbing 2-43.

By the close, the hosts had extended their lead to 252 halfway through the game, which is the series decider.

West Indies A began the day on 17/1 and Paterson started the job early on with the new ball by removing Zachary McCaskie (19), Kavem Hodge (0) and Kirk McKenzie (6) in the space of his three overs.

The 34-year-old then accounted for Joshua da Silva (5) to leave the visitors reeling on 57/5.

Kevin Sinclair made his way out to the middle and put on 28-run partnerships with Jordan Johnson (33) and Akeem Jordan (4) respectively.

Sinclair resisted the SA 'A' charge with his 50 off 68 balls (8 fours) but fell soon after to Mihlali Mpongwana (1-16).

Ruan de Swardt (1-0) then wrapped up the innings in his only over of the match as the visitors slumped to 126 all out.

They were one batter short after Jayden Seales injured his shoulder while fielding on day one.

Shamar Joseph (3-26) proved dangerous by dismissing SA ‘A’s top three batters - Neil Brand (4), David Bedingham (6) and Raynard van Tonder (30) - within the first 12 overs.

Zubayr Hamza (33*) and Khaya Zondo (29*) steadied the innings after tea before bad light brought an early close to the day with the hosts on 104/3.

Half-centuries for Zondo and Brand in Bloem

Khaya Zondo and Neil Brand both struck half-centuries for South Africa A (SA ‘A’) against West Indies A on day one of the third four-day match at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Zondo top scored with 70 off 114 balls (7 fours and 2 sixes) as the hosts were restricted to 274 from 67.4 overs in their first innings, with captain Brand adding 62.

Kevin Sinclair led the bowling efforts with a return of 5-44, with Shamar Joseph (3-65) and Shermon Lewis (2-68) claiming the other five wickets.

SA ‘A’ made four changes to the side that beat West Indies A in the second match with batters David Bedingham and Zubayr Hamza in for Tony de Zorzi and Keegan Petersen.

Seamers Duanne Olivier and Hardus Viljoen returned for the series decider in place of Tshepo Moreki and Dane Piedt.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Brand and Raynard van Tonder put 47 runs on the board between them before the latter flicked one from Joseph down leg and was caught behind for 25.

Bedingham, who received his maiden test call up for the Betway test series against India on Monday, faced 11 balls before he was caught off Lewis for 5.

Hamza (30) was next in and showed positive intent by getting off the mark with a boundary and added four more before the right-hander nicked a faint edge behind as Joseph picked up his second of the match.

Joseph then claimed his third scalp in consecutive overs as Brand fended one off to Zachary McCaskie at second slip.

With the score on 129/4, Zondo took on the role as anchor and marshalled on to his half-century off 77 balls.

However, at the other end, regular strikes from Sinclair prevented the last recognised batters – Ruan de Swardt (18), Clyde Fortuin (25) and Mihlali Mpongwana (0) – from going on to convert.

Zondo eventually fell to Lewis as he edged behind. His wicket brought two more for the visitors as Sinclair wrapped up the innings in the very next over.

In reply, Olivier got the breakthrough with Tagenarine Chanderpaul (3) edging one to Hamza in the slip cordon.

McCaskie (12*) and Kirk McKenzie (2*) ensured no further wickets fell late in the day as they closed on 17/1.

Piedt takes 11 wickets as SA 'A' square series

Dane Piedt’s six-wicket haul helped South Africa A (SA ‘A’) complete a comprehensive 232-run win over West Indies A on the final morning of the second four-day match at Buffalo Park in East London on Friday.

The right-arm spinner claimed six for 79 to complete a match haul of 11 for 107 to ensure the hosts levelled the series 1-1.

The decisive third match between the sides will take place in n Bloemfontein next week.

SA ‘A’ started the day needing five wickets to win and Piedt took the first scalp of Kevin Sinclair, caught for 21.

Abhijai Mansingh (5) was the next batter to fall within the space of three overs to Dane Paterson (1-44).

Tevin Imlach (34) followed after a sharp throw in from Raynard van Tonder fielding at point, which left the batter short of his ground at the non-striker's end, leaving the visitors on 164/8 within the first hour of play.

Akeem Jordan (21) and Shamar Joseph (18*) combined to take West Indies A past the 200 mark.

However, Piedt soon wrapped up the innings with two wickets in two overs as the visitors were bundled out for 209.

An unbeaten century from Keegan Petersen and Dane Piedt's three-for put South Africa A (SA 'A') firmly in the ascendency on day three of the second four-day match against West Indies A at Buffalo Park in East London on Thursday.

Petersen made 112 off 134 balls (10 fours and 5 sixes) in addition to the 67 he struck in the first innings, while there was a half-century for Raynard van Tonder (56 off 74 balls, 5 fours and 1 six) and 49 from Khaya Zondo.

SA ‘A’ declared on 297 for four to set the visitors a target of 442, after which West Indies A lost five wickets by the close to finish the day on 134/5.

The hosts started the day on 65/1, a lead of 209, and opening batter Tony de Zorzi (37) added three runs to his overnight score before he was caught at gully off Shamar Joseph (1-57).

Petersen joined Van Tonder at the crease and the pair looked comfortable as the latter made his way to his second half-century in as many innings.

The former South Africa Under-19 star fell shortly after, though, to Jair McAllister (1-57).

Petersen and Zondo then countered in a partnership worth 101 runs with Zondo falling one run short of his fifty as he miscued a reverse sweep to Abhijai Mansingh at backward point to hand Kavem Hodge (1-40) his first wicket of the match.

Petersen had Ruan de Swardt (29*) in support as he brought up his hundred in fine style with a pull shot to the boundary.

The declaration came soon after, 40 minutes before tea.

De Swardt (1-13) struck with the new ball as Tagenarine Chanderpaul found the edge and was caught behind for nought.

Piedt (3-57), who took a five-for in the first innings, then bowled Kirk McKenzie for 17.

Tshepo Moreki (1-16) picked up the next wicket as the paceman castled Hodge’s (22) stumps.

Zachary McCaskie offered some resistance with his 90-ball 50 (7 fours) before he was trapped on the pads lbw by Piedt.

Piedt then got his third wicket courtesy of some quick glove work by Clyde Fortuin to remove West Indies A captain Joshua da Silva for 5, ending a successful day for the hosts.

Piedt’s five-for puts SA 'A' in control

Dane Piedt’s five-for put South Africa A (SA ‘A’) in complete control on day two of the second four-day match against West Indies A at Buffalo Park in East London on Wednesday.

The ITEC Knights spinner claimed 5-28 runs from 12.2 overs with Tshepo Moreki providing excellent support through his three for 66.

Together the pair helped restrict the visitors to 154 all out, handing the home side a first innings lead of 144.

The South Africans, who were earlier bowled out for 298, then reached the close on 65 for one in the Eastern Cape.

They resumed the morning on 266/6 and managed to add only 32 runs for the last four wickets.

First up, Shamar Joseph (3/57) added another one to his tally after he bowled overnight batter Mihlali Mpongwana (13).

Akeem Jordan (3-43) then wreaked havoc with the remaining three wickets of Ruan de Swardt (42), Piedt (6) and Moreki (1).

In reply, Dane Paterson (2-28) got the first breakthrough within seven overs by removing Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 3.

Moreki then struck at the other end, pinning Kirk McKenzie (7) leg before wicket.

Kavem Hodge (25) and Zachary McCaskie came together to consolidate the innings and managed to put on 52 runs for the third wicket before Piedt broke through the former’s defences to pick up his first of the match.

Paterson saw off top-scorer McCaskie (62 off 95 balls, 12 fours) before Joshua da Silva (7) fell to Piedt.

Moreki then grabbed his second when he had Kevin Sinclair (7) trapped leg before wicket.

Two balls later, Piedt claimed his third scalp to take the visitors from 104/2 to 122/7 in the space of 10 overs.

Moreki struck once more by removing Abhijai Mansingh (14), before Piedt wrapped up the tail to celebrate his five-wicket haul.

Chanderpaul, Hodge half-centuries edge West Indies ahead of SA ‘A’ on day 2

Half-centuries from Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kavem Hodge ensured West Indies A gained a first-innings advantage over South Africa A (SA ‘A’) on the second day of the first four-day match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Wednesday.

The visitors resumed the morning on 46 for no loss and Chanderpaul and Hodge struck gritty 70s to guide their side to 314 for nine declared and secure a first innings lead of 27 runs.

Tshepo Moreki (3-56), Dane Piedt (2-60), Hardus Viljoen (2-92), Neil Brand (1-26) and Mihlali Mpongwana (1-35) were all among the wickets for the hosts.

Moreki impressed with a double strike in the space of one over in the morning session. Zachary McCaskie (31) drove the ball square to Zubayr Hamza at point before Kirk McKenzie (0) edged one behind four balls later.

Chanderpaul and Hodge then dug in and put on a third-wicket partnership worth 110 runs. Viljoen eventually got the breakthrough when he pinned Chanderpaul (78 off 150 balls, 12 fours) leg before. That wicket brought another for Viljoen, with Tevin Imlach caught for 16.

Mpongwana was next to strike for the home side when the well-placed Hodge (73 off 151 balls, 9 fours) feathered one behind.

With the score on 213 for five, contributions from Joshua Da Silva (20), Kevin Sinclair (39), Akeem Jordan (40) ensured the visitors surpassed SA ‘A’s first innings total of 287 for nine declared.

Petersen, De Zorzi and Fortuin hit fifties on opening day against Windies A

Half-centuries from Keegan Petersen, Tony de Zorzi and Clyde Fortuin steered South Africa A (SA ‘A’) to 287/9 declared on the opening day of the first four-day match against West Indies A at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Tuesday.

Having won the toss and opted to bat first, SA 'A' captain Neil Brand (5) fell to Shermon Lewis (1-59) early on within the first 10 overs of the day’s play.

Zubayr Hamza (30) then joined De Zorzi at the crease and the pair put on 62 runs before the former was dismissed by Jayden Seales (3-23) shortly after lunch.

De Zorzi, who made his Proteas test debut earlier this year against the West Indies, brought up a well-manufactured fifty off 92 balls (8 fours) with Petersen at the other end, but fell a few overs later for 55 after edging Kevin Sinclair (2-64) behind.

Petersen and David Bedingham then combined to add 74 runs – the highest partnership of the innings.

In his first appearance for the A side, Bedingham fell three runs short of a half-century (50 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes) as the right-hander was caught at first slip, handing Sinclair his second wicket of the innings.

Petersen (59 off 91 balls, 9 fours) followed soon after when the ball nipped back onto his stumps, giving Akeem Jordan (3-61) his first of three scalps.

The West Indian seamer struck in consecutive overs with Mihlali Mpongwana caught behind for one.

Hardus Viljoen added a handy 17 runs before he was bowled through the gate by Jordan.

Dane Piedt (5) was the next man out, trapped leg before by Seales.

While wickets fell regularly around SA 'A' wicketkeeper Fortuin, he continued to accelerate the run-rate and brought up his fifty with a lofty six over long-off.

He fell six balls later to Seales for a 71-ball 53 (7 fours, 1 six) and with his wicket came the declaration on 287/9.

West Indies began confidently in their reply, with openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul (27*) and Zachary McCaskie (17*) striking nine fours between them from the nine overs they were left to navigate before stumps.
