England paceman Jofra Archer has had successful surgery to remove a piece of glass that became lodged in a finger when he smashed a fish tank while trying to clean it.

The 25-year-old played two tests and all five Twenty20s during England's recent tour of India but was ruled out of the one-day series because of a problem with his right elbow.

While that issue remains the bigger concern, England men's managing director Ashley Giles said the finger problem, sustained in January, had been resolved.

Giles revealed the nature of the freak accident on a BBC radio show on Monday.

"This is going to sound like an awful conspiracy," Giles told the Tuffers and Vaughan programme. "He was cleaning or something at home and he's got a fish tank, dropped the fish tank, cut his hand.

"So he's been in surgery today (Monday), he's come out of it well. It was managed through India."

He added: "I think they've found a small fragment of glass still in the tendon so it was the right thing to do."

Archer, who is a key player for England across all formats, will miss the start of the Indian Premier League, which runs from April 9 to May 30.

England face a packed schedule of matches this year including a five-test series at home against India, a T20 World Cup in India and the Ashes in Australia.

Archer has been troubled by his elbow since 2019, missing three tests of England's tour of South Africa in early 2020 and the T20 series that followed.

His England teammate Ben Stokes said last week that Archer needed to get his elbow "properly sorted" to protect his long-term career.

England cricket coach Chris Silverwood said his team had learned many lessons from their tour of India even though they left empty-handed after series defeats in all three formats.

England have been on the road for almost three months, first in Sri Lanka and then in India, during one of the most restrictive away trips ever undertaken as a result of coronavirus protocols.

England started their tour well, winning their test series against Sri Lanka 2-0 and won the first test against India in Chennai.

But Virat Kohli's men bounced back strongly to win the last three tests and also took the Twenty20 and one-day international (ODI) honours after both series went to a decider.

"I'm very proud of them," said Silverwood. "I'm proud of each and every player who has been out here.

"I'm proud of the effort and the attitude that's been shown towards the game. I think we've learned a lot and from that point of view I couldn't ask any more of them. I think we take a lot of experience.

"It's a very difficult place to come and win, we know that India are very strong in their conditions."

Silverwood said England, world champions in the 50-over ODI format, had garnered valuable experience for the T20 World Cup, being held in India later this year.

The England coach also revisited the controversial rotation policy, which was used to give a number of multi-format players including Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root a rest at various points of the tour.

The approach attracted criticism in some quarters, with frequent comings and goings seen as disruptive.

However, Silverwood would not do things any differently given the psychological demands of touring during a pandemic and the already punishing physical workloads.

"I would do the same again," he said.

"I've said all along the priority has to be that the players are all right. Stepping in before anybody breaks, so to speak, is the best way to go. Prevention is better than a cure."

Virat Kohli says cricketers are suffering after months of bio-secure "bubble" life during the coronavirus pandemic as they head into the high-stress environment of the Indian Premier League.

Kohli, one of the game's most disciplined captains, raised his concerns after his India side edged England by seven runs in a thrilling decider to clinch the one-day series 2-1 in Pune on Sunday.

Players from both the sides moved on immediately to join their squads for the world's richest franchise Twenty20 tournament, which starts on 9 April, and all will have to go through restrictions again in the IPL "bubble".

"Scheduling needs to be looked at in future, because playing in 'bubbles' for so long, two to three months, is going to be very, very difficult going forward," Kohli said.

"You can't expect everyone to be at the same level of mental strength. Some times you do get cooked and you do feel like a bit of a change.

"I am sure things will be discussed and things will change in the future as well.

"But a different tournament, it brings fresh challenges heading into the IPL."

Most international players have been restricted to staying inside bio-secure "bubbles" since August, with only small breaks.

From September until January, India's players went through similar quarantine and isolation regimes in the delayed 2020 IPL in the UAE and their tour of Australia before having a short break ahead of the home England series which comprised four tests, five Twenty20 matches and three one-day internationals.

England's rest-and-rotate policy ensured players had breaks during their three months touring Sri Lanka, where they played two tests, and India.

BUBBLE AND BACK

England beat Sri Lanka 2-0 but went down to India 3-1 in tests and 3-2 in the Twenty20 series.

England players including Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (both Rajasthan Royals), Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Sunday's batting hero Sam Curran (Chennai Super Kings) are staying on to join the IPL.

Buttler said he was "excited" to take part in the tournament which lasts until 30 May. He said England management had kept players in top mental and physical shape.

"It's been great that everyone's health has been really looked after and whenever it's possible to get out of the 'bubble' and back in," said Buttler, who stood in as captain for injured Eoin Morgan in the last two one-day internationals.

"So we are all very thankful of that to help with those situations and also it's about how we plan moving forward. That's going to be part of player welfare."

Curran, who said he had come back "refreshed" after going home during the four Tests, hit a valiant unbeaten 95 in the final ODI.

"It's another learning series for me, really enjoyed it and I feel like it has given me lot of confidence going into the IPL," said Curran after his man-of-the-match performance just failed to produce a stunning victory for England who had fallen to 200-7 chasing 330 to win.

England, who have already played six tests in 2021, have an intensive calendar ahead and are scheduled to play another 12 tests by January 2022, five at home against India, two against New Zealand and five away Ashes Tests in Australia.

They will also have limited-overs series at home against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before they return to India for the Twenty20 World Cup in October.

England have no reason to push the panic button despite their 2-1 loss to India marking a second straight series defeat in the 50-overs format, said stand-in captain Jos Buttler.

England have dominated white-ball cricket in recent years, piling up nine one-day series victories in a row. They also top the world rankings in both the 50 overs and Twenty20 format.

However, their seven-run loss to India in a thrilling decider on Sunday came on the heels of the World Cup champions' defeat to Australia at home last year.

Buttler, who lead the side in the last two ODIs against India in the absence of the injured Eoin Morgan, said England were blooding fresh talent and the back-to-back defeats were nothing to worry about.

"We've been a brilliant side for a long time now, I wouldn't read too much into it," Buttler told reporters after Sunday's loss.

"We've lost two series now but it's two series in the last 11. We are still a very good side, we're expanding the talent pool with a few guys missing and few other guys getting opportunities, which is fantastic.

"And that's been a big part of us getting better and better as a side and we never want to put limitations on what we're capable of. We'll continue to try and push the boundaries and strive to do that."

Defeat in the ODI series capped a poor tour for England, who also lost the test series 3-1 and suffered defeat in the T20 leg. With India scheduled to host the T20 World Cup later this year and the 50-overs World Cup in 2023, Buttler was pleased with England's exposure to the conditions.

"It's a long cycle looking ahead to the next World Cup (in 2023) and of course you want to learn and win at the same time," the wicketkeeper-batsman said. "We're disappointed when we don't do that but there's a big picture."

India beat England by seven runs on Sunday to clinch the one-day international series 2-1 despite a courageous unbeaten 95 from Sam Curran.

England, who had already lost the Test and Twenty20 series, bowled out India for 329 with 10 balls to spare in Pune.

England looked on the ropes at 200 for seven, but Curran equalled the highest ODI score by a batsman coming in at number eight or lower.

England sent out the order that Curran was to be given the strike as much as possible for the closing overs as they hoped for an unlikely win.

But, needing 14 to win off the final six balls, Curran came up against a disciplined effort from T. Natarajan who gave away just one boundary.

Stand-in skipper Jos Buttler said England, who were without injured captain Eoin Morgan, were indebted to Curran's "unbelievable" innings.

Indian seamers Shardul Thakur and Bhuvneshwar Kumar shared seven wickets between them as England finished on 322 for nine.

England's top order failed to build partnerships. Kumar sent back openers Jason Roy, for 14, and Jonny Bairstow, for one, in the first three overs.

Ben Stokes, who survived a dropped catch by Hardik Pandya on 15, fell to Natarajan for 35 and Thakur trapped Buttler lbw for 15.

Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone put on 50 for the fifth wicket but Thakur had Livingstone caught and bowled for 36.

"We're disappointed, we came here and we wanted to win, but there have been great learnings throughout the whole process," said Buttler, who praised Curran as one of the new generation making their mark in the England side.

"Sam keeps showing what a match-winner he is. He is still only 22 and the scope of where he can take his game to is massive so we are all very excited for him."

Curran put on 57 for the eighth wicket with Adil Rashid, who was superbly caught by Virat Kohli in the covers, and then 60 for the ninth wicket with Mark Wood, who made 14 before being run out in the final over.

The left-hander, who was dropped on 22 and 87, hit nine fours and three sixes in his 83-ball knock.

POSITIVE INDIA ATTACK WITH BAT

India started strongly with a 103-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma, who scored 37, and Shikhar Dhawan, who hit 67, before Rashid's leg-spin removed both.

Moeen Ali rattled the stumps of Kohli, playing his 200th international as captain, but who has struggled against spin at times during England's tour of India.

The home side were then indebted to Rishabh Pant (78) and Hardik Pandya (64) who put on 99 for the fifth wicket.

Left-hander Pant swatted a six off Rashid to bring up his second successive half-century.

Thakur hit 30 off 21 balls but India lost their final four wickets for eight runs as Wood claimed three wickets, including two in one over.

Kohli said he was "surprised" that Thakur was not named man-of-the-match instead of Curran after his four wickets and 30 runs.

"And Bhuvi (Kumar) another contender for man-of-the-series. These guys were the difference in the middle overs and powerplay."

England's Jonny Bairstow was named man-of-the-series for his 219 runs in three matches including a match-winning 124 in England's chase of 337 in the second ODI.

Kohli's India outplayed England in the four Tests 3-1 and then edged out the tourists 3-2 in the Twenty20 series.

Jonny Bairstow on Friday said England backs its batsmen to go for big hits after he and Ben Stokes led the team's successful chase of 337 in the second one-day international against India, an innings which featured 20 sixes.

Baristow, who made 124, and Stokes, who hit 99 off 52 balls, put on 175 for the second wicket and smashed 17 sixes between them to help England win by six wickets in 43.3 overs and level the three-match series at 1-1 in Pune.

The England innings witnessed a total of 20 hits over the fence in comparison to India's 14 in their score of 336 for six.

"To be honest it's just happening that way. There hasn't been a conversation saying we must hit more sixes," said man of the match Bairstow.

"But I think if you look at games going around the world whether that be T20s or 50-over cricket, the team that hits the most boundaries wins the game."

He added: "We hit 20 sixes, that's an extraordinary number in one game. We know if we can keep hitting boundaries and putting bowlers under pressure they know if they miss their length they could go for six.

"Executing won't happen every single time and people will get out doing it but everyone in the dressing room is backing the person in the middle. If they want to hit the ball for six, they believe in everyone's ability."

Bairstow and Jason Roy, who made 55, set up the chase in their opening stand of 110 to take the attack to the Indian bowlers.

The right-left batting pair of Bairstow and Stokes went into over-drive between overs 31 and 35 with the England total shooting from 194 to 281.

"I got told a couple of stats after the game and didn't realise it was like that," said Bairstow, who recorded his 11th ODI ton.

"We had 87 runs in five overs...if you're able to put together those overs back-to-back you put yourself in a position to win the game more often than not."

On Stokes, he said, "The match ups Ben decided to take down were the right match ups and he struck it beautifully. There is a method, I promise you. We're not just playing shots and slogging."

India skipper Virat Kohli praised the England pyrotechnics.

"It was some of the most amazing batting you'll see when chasing," said Kohli.

"They totally blew us away during that partnership of Jonny and Ben Stokes. We didn't even have a chance during that partnership."

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar had said Bairstow looked "uninterested" is his test outings early this month when he scored three ducks out of his four innings in two India games.

Bairstow said he will await Gavaskar's call for more on this conversation.

"First of all, no, I hadn't heard that and secondly I am interested as to how opinion can have been made especially when there has been no correspondence and communication between myself and him," said Bairstow.

"So he is more than welcome to give me a ring and I will speak to him about my will to do well in Test cricket and the enjoyment I do get out of playing test cricket."

Joe Root's England went down to India 3-1 in the tests and then the tourists, led by Eoin Morgan, lost the Twenty20 series 3-2.

Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes launched a six-hitting feast as England chased down 337 against India in a series-levelling win in the second one-day international on Friday with home skipper Virat Kohli admitting: "We didn't have a chance".

Bairstow (124) and Stokes (99) put on 175 for the second wicket and smashed 17 sixes between them as England romped home in 43.3 overs with six wickets to spare in Pune.

The three-match series is now level at 1-1 with the decider on Sunday.

"It was some of the most amazing batting you'll see when chasing," India skipper Virat Kohli said of the England onslaught.

"They totally blew us away during that partnership of Jonny and Ben Stokes. We didn't even have a chance during that partnership."

The left-handed Stokes, who hit 10 sixes in his 52-ball blitz, missed out on his hundred after being caught behind off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Bairstow fell to Prasidh Krishna, who also bowled stand-in-skipper Jos Buttler for a duck.

England lost three wickets for three runs, but Dawid Malan (16) and debutant Liam Livingstone (27) took the team home with an unbroken stand of 50.

It was England's fifth-highest ODI chase and their best against India.

Bairstow, who was named man of the match, led the charge, tearing into the Indian attack with a 110-run opening stand with Jason Roy, who made 55.

'NO FEAR'

Roy was run out for 55 in a mix up with Bairstow, who then combined with Stokes to trump KL Rahul's 108 that helped India to 336 for six in 50 overs after being put in to bat first.

Bairstow reached his 11th ODI hundred in 95 balls with a six off Kuldeep Yadav, who also took a hammering from Stokes, the Durham left-hander thumping him for three successive sixes in one over as he raced from 50 to 99 in just 12 balls.

"Over the years, we have set big totals, we have chased big totals," said Stokes. "We don't really fear too much to be honest."

Buttler echoed the views of regular captain Eoin Morgan, who was ruled out of the final two ODIs with a split webbing in his hand, about England's aggressive brand of play.

"Delighted with the response of the guys," said Buttler.

"We put in a very good bowling performance to restrict India to that total. I am delighted that we continued to commit to the fashion we want to play our cricket."

CHALLENGING TOTAL

Earlier Rahul was involved in century stands with Kohli, who made 66, and then Rishabh Pant, who smashed a rapid 77.

Reece Topley sent back Shikhar Dhawan caught at slip for four and fellow quick Sam Curran got Rohit Sharma out for 25.

Kohli and Rahul put on 121 for the second wicket to lay the foundations of India's challenging total.

Kohli, who was dropped on 35 by Buttler off Adil Rashid, completed his fifth fifty in seven international innings before being finally caught by Buttler off Rashid.

Rahul, who made an unbeaten 62 in India's win in the opening game on Tuesday, reached his fifth ODI hundred.

He put on 113 for the third wicket with Pant before he was caught off Tom Curran. His 114-ball knock included seven fours and two sixes.

Pant reached his fifty with a six and smashed seven sixes in his 40-ball blitz.

Hardik Pandya hit 35 off 16 balls as India finished with a flourish, scoring 126 runs from the last 10 overs, but the effort was not enough on a batting-friendly pitch.

England skipper Eoin Morgan has been ruled out of the final two one-day internationals against India in Pune after splitting the webbing between his thumb and index finger in Tuesday's opener, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Thursday.

Jos Buttler will be captain from Friday's second match, while batsman Liam Livingstone is set to make his ODI debut.

Wicketkeeper batsman Sam Billings, who has a bruised collar bone, will be sidelined on Friday, with a decision on his fitness for Sunday's final match to be taken in due course. Batsman Dawid Malan is also available for selection.

Morgan came out to bat with four stitches in his right hand having split his webbing while fielding on Tuesday and scored a defiant 22, as England lost the match by 66 runs.

He went through a fielding drill during training at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Thursday before declaring himself unfit.

"I had the hand re-dressed before the start of training but it quickly became apparent that I found myself protecting the injury and getting into the wrong positions to catch the ball," Morgan said.

"There's nowhere to hide on the field in international cricket these days, especially in limited-over formats, so it didn't require any great thought to make myself unavailable.

"It was a freak injury and it's extremely frustrating but there's nothing I can do about it. It's now just a case of letting the cut heal. I have every confidence in Jos and the rest of the squad coping without me."

India batsman Shreyas Iyer is also out of the remaining two ODIs due to a shoulder injury.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes was unsure if his Rajasthan Royals teammate Jofra Archer would be able to play any part in this year's Indian Premier League due to injury and praised the fast bowler for prioritising his national team commitments.

The paceman missed the final test against India with a right elbow injury but returned for the five-match Twenty20 series, claiming a career-best 4-33 in the fourth match in Ahmedabad.

Archer subsequently withdrew from the three one-dayers in India to return home and the English cricket board said that he will miss the start of the 9 April - 30 May IPL.

"We're not sure how much of it he'll be able to play a part, if any," Stokes told reporters on Thursday. "One thing that we need to be very mindful of is that Jofra does need to give this elbow a chance to recover."

England have a packed schedule for the home summer with test series against New Zealand and India and white-ball fixtures against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the Twenty20 World Cup in India and the Ashes against arch-rivals Australia.

"It's great that he's came out and said he's putting his England commitments before everything else," Stokes said of Archer. "It's tough having an injury then getting through a game and then going backwards again.

"I think long term for his career, this is a very sensible option for him to be taking."

Stokes returned to England's 50-over setup for the first time since the side's 2019 World Cup triumph at home during the defeat against India on Tuesday and batted at an unfamiliar number three spot in the absence of the rested Joe Root.

The 29-year-old, England's hero in the World Cup victory, managed to score just one.

"There would be talk, whoever filled the place at number three with Rooty not being here," Stokes said ahead of Friday's second ODI. "People keep talking and I'll just go out and try to do what I've been asked to do.

"But I did actually message Rooty and asked him about his mind-set at three, and he was pretty clear to me in saying 'just play the way you play'.

"Just because he plays a certain way doesn't mean I have to do it like that."

England will not change their aggressive style of play even if they lose the one day series against India, after their defeats in the test and Twenty20 games, Ben Stokes insisted on Thursday.

England must beat India in Pune on Friday to keep alive their hopes of winning the series. Defeat could see them lose their number one world ODI ranking to India.

"We would be bitterly disappointed to lose a series as we would with any other one," said Stokes, who was the hero of England's World Cup triumph in 2019.

"We deserve to be number one because of our results and the way we play our cricket and we won't go away from that."

No longer being number one would not be the end of the world, the star all-rounder said.

"Our driving force is the way we go about it and our attitude towards playing the game.

"That is what has made us be successful and the more successful we are then the more opportunities we have got to be at number one.

"So our driving force is making sure we stay true to ourselves and our belief in how we play the game -- and that is something we will not change."

England were thrashed by 66 runs in the first game, adding to alarm bells after their 3-2 defeat in the T20s and 3-1 loss in the tests.

"We know we are a much better team than that," said Stokes.

"We are bitterly disappointed but what we have been very good at is putting previous games to bed quickly whether we have had a successful game or a poor game, and all our concentration will be on tomorrow."

Stokes also said England would not be panicked into changing their batting lineup. He has played at number three for the one day games because of the absence of Joe Root.

"Just because we lost the T20 series doesn't mean we need to start changing things around.

"When we win nobody says too much but when we lose everyone starts to pipe up again. I am happy where everything is in our white ball team because that is our best formula to win."

England could be forced into changes on Friday because of injuries to Sam Billings and captain Eoin Morgan in the first game.

Billings hurt his shoulder in a heavy fall while fielding and Morgan needed stitches to split webbing between two fingers.

"Sam is a lot better than we initially thought," said Stokes, but the batsman was being "assessed".

The demands of the Indian Premier League have helped propel the national team's rising stars onto the international stage, batsman K.L. Rahul said ahead of the second one-day international match against England on Friday.

India thrashed England by 66 runs in the first of the three-match series on Tuesday after standout performances by debutant pace bowler Prasidh Krishna and all-rounder Krunal Pandya.

Krishna returned figures of 4-52, the best by an Indian on his debut, and Pandya hit 50 in 26 balls to record the fastest fifty for an ODI debutant.

"A huge part is the IPL and the confidence that these boys come in with," Rahul told journalists Thursday.

Rahul said young Indian players compete against top international stars in the IPL and had become consistent performers in the domestic game.

Two other newcomers, wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav -- also key performers in the cash-rich IPL -- stole the limelight in the T20 series against England, the world's top-rated team.

Rahul suffered a run drought in the T20 matches against England and was dropped for the fifth game, but finally stuck form on Tuesday with 62 not out in the first ODI.

"When you are part of this Indian team, you always know competition would be really high. You can never sit back and feel comfortable," Rahul said.

He said he was disappointed but not worried about his form and saw the dip as part of a player's journey.

"You obviously carry your confidence or bad performance into the next series. The hardest thing for a player is to forget what happened a couple of games ago and start afresh," Rahul said.

India will be forced to make at least one change for the second ODI after middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the series with an injured shoulder suffered in the first game in Pune.

The Delhi Capitals captain will also miss at least the start of the IPL in April. Some media reports said Iyer could be sidelined for two months.

"I’ve been reading your messages and have been overwhelmed by all the outpouring of love and support," Iyer tweeted on Thursday.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone. You know what they say, the greater the setback, the stronger the comeback. I shall be back soon," he added.

After racing to the fastest one-day international (ODI) fifty by a debutant, India's Krunal Pandya dedicated Tuesday's record-breaking knock against England to his late father who died of a cardiac arrest in January.

Making his ODI debut with his brother Hardik also in the side, Krunal came in at 205 for five and raced to a 26-ball fifty, stitching together a 112-run partnership with KL Rahul to give India a commanding total of 317 in 50 overs.

India won the first game of the three-match series by 66 runs after fellow debutant and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna finished with figures of 4-54 as England collapsed after a blistering start.

"Papa, with every ball you were always on my mind and in my heart. Tears rolled down my face as I felt your presence with me," Krunal wrote on Twitter.

"Thank you for being my strength, for being the biggest support I've had. I hope I made you proud. This is for you Papa, everything we do is for you Papa."

Krunal, who raised his bat to the heavens when he reached his fifty, finished the innings with an unbeaten 58 which included seven boundaries and two sixes.

The 29-year-old allrounder broke down when he was interviewed during the innings break but his younger brother Hardik, who handed him his first cap before the game, was on hand to console him.

India skipper Virat Kohli said Tuesday's 66-run win over England was "one of the sweetest" after his bowlers hit back following a batting onslaught in the first one-day international in Pune.

Chasing 318 for victory, the tourists were bowled out for 251 in 42.1 overs despite Jonny Bairstow's 94 and his opening stand of 135 with Jason Roy to trail the three-match series 1-0.

Shikhar Dhawan hit 98 while KL Rahul, 62 not out, and Krunal Pandya, unbeaten 58 off 31 balls, steered the hosts to 317-5 after being put in to bat first.

"This is one of our sweetest victories in the recent past," skipper Virat Kohli said in the post-match presentation.

"It is right up there purely because from 135-1 getting nine wickets is simply outstanding. I am a really, really proud man right now."

Prasidh Krishna, who returned ODI figures of 4-54, a best by an Indian on debut, and fellow quick bowler Shardul Thakur shared seven wickets between them and turned the game on its head after the Bairstow-Roy blitz.

Krishna broke the stand to send back Roy for 46 and then struck in his next over with the key wicket of Ben Stokes for one.

He nearly got his third on the next ball when Morgan edged his first ball to Kohli at slip but the India captain dropped the catch.

Thakur soon took over from Krishna to deny Bairstow his hundred after getting the opener caught at deep midwicket.

He then struck twice in his next over to send back Morgan, for 22, and Jos Buttler, lbw for two, as England slipped further to 176-5.

Moeen Ali made a fighting 30 before falling to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who combined with Pandya and Krishna to wipe out the tail.

"We need to execute better than we did today. India did really well and deserved to win," said England captain Eoin Morgan.

"Being able to take the attack to the opposition is something that we pride ourselves on. We want to continue to push the envelope in that regard. It's better for us to lose like this than losing by 20 runs."

'BIGGER SCORES'

The away side have fitness worries after Sam Billings "sprained his collar bone joint" and skipper Morgan needed four stitches on the webbing between his thumb and index finger.

On the injuries, Morgan said, "We are going to wait 48 hours, see how it is. Give them as much time as needed to hopefully be available for Friday (second ODI).

"When you have a split webbing fielding is a concern and with Sam obviously landing while he is fielding."

For India, left-hander Pandya, who played alongside his younger brother Hardik Pandya, put on an unbroken stand of 112 with wicketkeeper-batsman Rahul as India finished with a flourish.

Stokes struck first with his pace bowling, claiming Rohit Sharma caught behind for 28. He returned figures of 3-34 from eight overs.

Dhawan put on 105 for the second wicket with Kohli. He made his 31st ODI fifty with a six off legspinner Adil Rashid.

Kohli reached a run-a-ball fifty but fell for 56 to pace bowler Mark Wood.

"If I had stayed with Shikhar around that 40-over period we could have got 350," said Kohli.

"England hit some amazing shots, and scores will be high scoring moving forward, and we'll look to get bigger scores moving forward."

Dhawan, who hit 11 fours and two sixes in his 106-ball knock, fell short of his hundred after he mistimed a pull off Stokes.

Pandya completed his 50 in 26 balls to record the fastest fifty for an ODI debutant and later choked up with emotion while dedicating the innings to his father who died in January.

England's three one-day internationals against India starting Tuesday will be a fresh opportunity for players to make the case for World Cup places this year, skipper Eoin Morgan said.

England lost a hard-fought Twenty20 series against India 3-2.

But Morgan and coach Chris Silverwood say the tour is still providing valuable lessons about the tough conditions in the country where the T20 World Cup will be staged in October-November.

And more will be learned from the ODIs in Pune, said to the captain.

"Given the World Cup round the corner, playing any international cricket at all is a huge opportunity for guys who have been on the fringes and not made selection so far," Morgan told reporters.

The 50-over games will be an "important building block for our squad".

Apart from the loss of injured fast bowler Jofra Archer, the ODI squad is little different to the T20 selection.

But Morgan said Sam Billings, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali will all be in contention for a place in the team to be announced ahead of the first match.

England are reigning 50-over champions and Morgan said they must prove their worth on the hard, dusty wickets.

"The challenge for us is always trying to explore and push the limits as much as we can given the conditions," said Morgan.

"In conditions that are little bit alien to us naturally, like India, it's always nice to get out of your comfort zone and learn more about your team and your players to try and make mistakes and learn from them."

STOKES IS BACK

Joe Root's England also lost to India in the four-test series and Morgan insisted that an ODI victory would not compensate for the earlier losses.

"You don't always have to win every series in order to win a World Cup. You continuously need to get better, need to be tested as a side, need to fail in order to learn.

"That involves losing, which isn't fun but it is part of the journey."

Allrounder Ben Stokes will be back in the ODI team after playing the hero's role in the World Cup win against New Zealand at Lord's in July 2019.

Morgan said having Stokes back in ODI colours is always a boost.

"It's great to have him back. Any opportunity we have to get him in a white-ball game, which has been few and far between, is brilliant," said Morgan of the key player.

"I think he really enjoys his white-ball cricket and it's important to keep him engaged with that.

"If you don't play a format for a long time, it can show a bit of neglect in certain parts of the game and we know how demanding the rest of the formats are, both on his body and his mind so it's great to have him round."

India skipper Virat Kohli on Monday said players should be consulted over the cricket calender as the extended bubble life during the coronavirus pandemic has strengthened fears of burnout.

With India headed into three one-day internationals against England starting on Tuesday after winning a gruelling test series 3-1 and Twenty20 series 3-2, Kohli said more attention must be paid to cricketers' mental health.

"The players need to be spoken to and consulted with all round," said Kohli.

"Otherwise, it's going to be a case of whoever can last through difficult times like this plays. If not, then move away and someone else replaces that player."

He added, "I don't think that's healthy for a cricket system and cricket culture moving forward which we definitely want to make stronger and stronger."

Responding to suggestions that the 50-over games were out of place in a year dominated by the World Test Championship final and the T20 World Cup, Kohli said tournament scheduling "is something that is not in our control."

"I think it's very important to consider how much cricket you are playing. It's not just the physical side of things but the mental side of things as well," said Kohli.

"Scheduling and workloads is something that everyone will have to be very aware," he added. "Especially in today's day and age where you just don't know where restrictions might come in."

Most players have been in secure bubbles, with only small breaks since last August.

From September until January, India's players went through the Indian Premier League and a tour of Australia.

'UMPIRE’S CALL CREATING CONFUSION'

Kohli though stayed away from the debate of England's rest and rotate pollicy in the pandemic, saying it was their "internal" matter.

But the Indian superstar slammed the "umpire's call" in the game's decision review system, saying it creates "confusion".

The decision of an on-field umpire is critical when a batting or bowling side opts for a TV review during a leg before wicket call.

The batter escapes lbw even if the tracker shows the ball would have hit the stumps if a large part of the ball was not hitting the stumps and the on-field official had ruled it not out.

"The umpire's call right now is creating lot of confusion," said Kohli.

"When you get bowled as a batsman you don't expect the ball to hit 50 per cent into the stumps to consider yourself bowled, so when the ball is being shown as clipping the stumps the bails are going to fall."

Kohli, who last week suggested an "I don't know" option for umpires in a catch review, said the game's complexities must be done away with.

"It is a serious, serious thing that needs to be considered because there is lot at stake in the future, in big tournaments," said Kohli.

"And you don't want some grey area factors in the game, which leave you with no clarity, to be the defining factors of those big tournaments and big games."

India's Shikhar Dhawan will be Rohit Sharma's opening partner in the three-match one-day series against England, captain Virat Kohli said on the eve of the opener in Pune.

Having rested Rohit for the first two Twenty20 Internationals, India used four different opening combinations in the five-match series against Eoin Morgan's men.

Dhawan managed four runs in the first match and did not get another chance in the series, which India won 3-2.

Fellow opener KL Rahul could not grab the opportunity either and managed 15 runs in four matches before being dropped for Saturday's decider.

Ishan Kishan, who smashed a fiery 50 on his debut in the second match, is not part of the ODI squad.

"Shikhar and Rohit will definitely start," Kohli, who opened with deputy Rohit in the final Twenty20, told a video conference on Monday.

"When it comes to one-day cricket, I don't think there's any issues or doubts over Rohit and Shikhar opening together.

"They've been amazing for us in the past few years, so we're going to start with that."

All eyes will be on top-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav, who smashed a blistering fifty in his first international knock against England and earned a maiden ODI call-up.

"It will be interesting because there are a few younger players who are getting an opportunity in the one-day set-up for the first time," Kohli said.

Kohli will open for Royal Challengers Bangalore in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) and wants to continue in that role in the Twenty20 World Cup at home later this year.

"I want to go back into understanding my role as an opener, which I've done successfully in the past in T20 cricket, so that I provide an option to open up a slot for someone like Surya who's playing the way he is at the moment..." he said.

Moeen Ali warming the bench during the Twenty20 series against India was "circumstantial" and the allrounder remains a vital white-ball player for the team, captain Eoin Morgan said on Monday.

Moeen tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival in Sri Lanka in January. The 33-year-old played one test in India, before flying home for a pre-arranged rest.

On his return, Moeen watched from the sidelines as India beat England 3-2 in the five-match Twenty20 series.

Morgan hinted Moeen would get his chance in the three-match ODI series beginning on Tuesday when asked if he still regarded him as a vital member of the side.

"Yes, I do," Morgan told a video conference.

"Anybody who's an allrounder within the side and makes our squad is extremely valuable to our side.

"I know he's not played but that's been circumstantial. The pitches that we've played on just have not turned, and that obviously limits the amount of a finger spinner's contribution."

Morgan said Moeen, known for his nagging off-spin and fluent batting, was considered for each of the five games though Adil Rashid played as the lone spinner.

The England captain said Moeen had returned rejuvenated and coped well with his T20 exclusion.

"He certainly takes them all in his stride. And I think the little period that Mo spent at home before this series has done a world of good."

England have rested test captain Joe Root from the ODI series after their 3-1 series defeat this month.

Morgan said the team would miss Root but stressed they were "spoilt for choice" with batsmen who could fill the void at No 3.

"Obviously, losing Joe Root is a massive hole, for a guy who scores at a run-a-ball and averages fifty.

"He's an exceptional player and has been for a long time. So we'll miss him. But it's just going to be a matter of somebody slotting in at three and going about their own business."

Fast bowler Jofra Archer has "put England first" by leaving the tour of India early for treatment and missing at least the start of the lucrative Indian Premier League, England coach Chris Silverwood said on Sunday.

The England management will put "all resources" into helping the 25-year-old pace spearhead to be ready for the Twenty20 World Cup and a key Australia tour later this year, Silverwood added.

Archer has been ruled out of England's one-day series in India this week and will also miss the start of the IPL because of his worsening elbow injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board said.

Archer missed two of the four tests in India because of the problem but played in all five matches of the T20 series which India sealed 3-2 on Saturday.

"Jofra's elbow issue has deteriorated over the course of the Twenty20 International series and made it increasingly challenging for him to maintain performance levels. He has been deemed unfit for selection for the ODI series," said the ECB.

Archer has a $1.1 million deal with the Rajasthan Royals but the ECB said he would miss at least the opening games of the IPL tournament which starts on 9 April.

'PASSIONATE' ARCHER

Silverwood paid tribute to Archer's hunger to play for England and potentially miss out on his big IPL pay day.

"It was a joint decision and he put England first basically. He needs to get this right," said the England coach.

"We have made some space to make sure that we give him the best chance of being successful for England," he added.

"Jofra was very, very keen on that as well. He wants to be at the World Cup, and he wants to be at the Ashes. It wasn't a difficult decision by either side to be honest. I think it was a sensible decision.

"It is very satisfying and it shows how passionate Jofra is about playing for England and how much he enjoys playing for England."

Archer has missed a number of games over the past year with elbow problems but Silverwood said the latest issue was not the same injury.

"The important thing here is that we get it cleared up, we get him to see the specialist, we make sure that we put everything in place for Jofra to have a long, successful career for England in all formats."

Archer's omission aside, the 14-man squad for the ODIs on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday closely resembles the one England had in the T20 series.

Test captain Joe Root, no longer a T20 regular, will not be flying back for the 50-over matches. Silverwood said this would open up opportunities for "fresh faces" at No 3 and other positions.

Legspinner Matt Parkinson has been promoted from the standby list but batsman Dawid Malan and fast bowler Chris Jordan, involved in the T20 series, join seamer Jake Ball as travelling reserves.

India's latest Twenty20 hero Suryakumar Yadav was named in the one-day squad on Friday for three games against England scheduled to be held behind closed doors in the coronavirus hotspot of Pune.

Yadav smashed 57 in his first international innings on Thursday to set up India's series-levelling, eight-run win in the fourth T20 against Eoin Morgan's side in Ahmedabad.

The deciding match is on Saturday followed by the one-day games on March 23, 26 and 28 in the western city of Pune, which recorded close to 5 000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday.

Covid-19 has surged in many major cities in India in the past two weeks, forcing the final three matches of the ongoing T20 series to be played to empty stands.

Up-and-coming bowler Prasidh Krishna was also named in the 18-member ODI squad led by Virat Kohli.
