Josh Inglis's record-breaking century laid the platform for Australia's 70 run-hammering of Scotland in Edinburgh on Friday as they took an unassailable 2-0 lead in a three-match Twenty20 series.

Travis Head, fresh from his hundred in Wednesday's opener, was out for a first-ball duck after Scotland won the toss at the Grange.

But his exit brought Leeds-born wicketkeeper Inglis to the crease, with the No 3 smashing seven fours and as many sixes as he raced to three figures in just 43 balls, the fastest hundred for Australia in men's T20s.

Inglis's innings was the cornerstone of Australia's 196-4, with Scotland managing just 126 all out in reply.

"It's pretty special to be honest," the 29-year-old Inglis said after stumps. "To hold that record is really nice.

"There was a bit happening (on the pitch) early doors," he said. "Once the new ball wore off, it got easier. I was just looking to play some good shots and show some intent.

"It's a good opportunity for me to get some game time and try cement my spot. There's a lot of good players but to put some performances on the board is pretty key."

Opening batsman Head was bowled for a golden duck by Brad Currie, the paceman leading Scotland's attack with 3-37.

But there was no stopping Inglis as he powered his way to a century before he was caught in the covers off Chris Sole.

Scotland's chase never got going, with Brandon McMullen playing a lone hand of 59 as Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis took 4-23.

Opener Head blitzed five sixes and 12 fours as Australia set the highest-ever T20 international first powerplay score of 113 for one from the opening six overs.

The tourists had lost a wicket without a run on the board as Jake Fraser-McGurk fell to a three-ball duck.

But Head and captain Mitchell Marsh bludgeoned the Scotland attack.

Marsh smashed 30 off one over from Jack Jarvis, while Head reached his half-century from just 17 balls.

Both fell to Mark Watt in the seventh over, but by then the damage had already been done.

Wicketkeeper Josh Inglis was able to pick up the baton as his quick-fire unbeaten 27 helped earn Australia a seven-wicket victory with 62 balls to spare.

Earlier, George Munsey top-scored for Scotland with 28.

Sean Abbott was the pick of the Australia bowlers with three for 39.

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of Australia's three-match Twenty20 international series against Scotland next month with a calf injury.

Hazlewood has been replaced in the squad by Riley Meredith, who last played for Australia in 2021, but is expected to return for T20 and one-day international matches against England, which begin on September 11.

The Australians start their series against Scotland on September 4 in Edinburgh.

Mitch Marsh will captain Australia during the tour after Pat Cummins was given time off to rest ahead of a summer programme featuring a five-test series against India.

Young batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk was selected Monday for Australia's white-ball tour of the UK in place of the retired David Warner, as selectors gave pace spearhead Pat Cummins a "pre-planned" rest.

Mitchell Marsh will be captain for the September trip which will start with three Twenty20 internationals against Scotland before three Twenty20 and five one-day internationals against England.

Former captain Steve Smith, who was overlooked for the T20 World Cup earlier this year, will play only in the 50-over format.

Test skipper Cummins "will miss the entirety of the UK tour in line with a pre-planned, long-term load management strategy", Cricket Australia said in naming the squads.

Destructive opening batsman Fraser-McGurk, 22, made his one-day international debut earlier this year and had been a travelling reserve at the Twenty20 World Cup but now gets his chance after veteran Warner stepped away at the end of the tournament.

Explosive allrounder Cooper Connolly, 20, is also in line to make his T20 debut but veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was left out.

"This tour gives us a great opportunity to bring in some new players," said chair of selectors George Bailey.

"We are particularly pleased to offer Cooper his first opportunity in the T20 squad having introduced the likes of Jake (Fraser McGurk), Spencer (Johnson), Xavier (Bartlett) and Aaron (Hardie) in the past 12 months.

"They are exciting prospects to join the likes of Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis in the white ball set-up.
