Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu claimed career-best figures of 6-24 as she helped Pakistan’s Women to a comfortable six-wicket win over South Africa in the third and final ODI at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Monday.

South Africa, who saved their worst performance for this match with some woeful batting in their innings of 115, still won the series 2-1.

Tazmin Brits, who didn’t play in this match, picked up the player of the series award for two unbeaten hundreds, while Sandhu was player of the match.

SA skipper Wolvaardt said the series was “excellent preparation” for the World Cup, with the batters scoring big runs in the first two matches. “But I was disappointed with our performance today. The pitch was very different and I don’t think we adjusted well enough with the bat. But the bowlers did well and it was good to give the entire squad a run out in the series.”

ULTRA-CAUTIOUS PAKISTAN

Facing a paltry victory target of 116, Pakistan were ultra-cautious in their innings, taking 20 balls to score their first run and labouring to 24 for one in the first 10-over powerplay, but they accelerated to eventually win the match in 31 overs with their best batter, Sidra Amin, on-driving her eighth boundary to clinch her half-century and victory.

South Africa had little hope of defending their total, but they began well when their expert left-arm spinner, Nonkululeko Mlaba, had Omaima Sohail caught at point with her first ball in the second over.

Muneeba Ali and Amin went about their business, determined not to take the least risk, a fair enough approach given their need for a morale-boosting win and the plentiful time they had to achieve it.

Ali, who struck six fours in her 76-ball 44, was eventually well held by wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta off Nadine de Klerk, who then claimed the wicket two balls later of skipper Fatima Sana, caught in the deep attempting to dispatch a full toss. Natalia Pervaiz and Amin added 38 before Pervaiz was castled, trying to win the match with a flourish.

But Amin, rock solid throughout, ensured victory for her team with a 94-ball half-ton. The right-hander was the top scorer in the series, also striking two hundreds at her favourite ground, where she averages over a hundred.

Earlier, South Africa’s batters disappointed after they made five changes for this match, presumably because they already enjoyed a winning lead of 2-0 in the three-match series and also because they wanted outings for their less-heralded players in preparation for the ICC Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka at the end of the month.

The match was played on the same pitch as the first ODI, but the dry surface was abrasive, having been shorn of grass, and South Africa’s batters were all at sea against Sandhu and legspinner Aroob Shah (2-16), who managed to get some moderate purchase on the low, slow track.

WORRYING PERFORMANCE

It was a worrying performance from South Africa’s batters, who will surely have to face similar conditions in Sri Lanka and India.

South Africa made deceptively good progress in the early overs, however, largely due to some splendid strokes from Wolvaardt who struck six fours with some typically elegant drives and clips through midwicket. But when she fell in the seventh over, playing too early at seamer Diana Baig and offering an easy catch to midwicket, the South African batting crumbled with the visitors losing six wickets for 36.

Most of the early wickets to fall were disappointingly soft with Sune Luus mistiming an off-drive to cover, while Wolvaardt’s opening partner, Karabo Meso, lobbed one back to offspinner Omaima Sohail. Only Miane Smit, who struck two fine drives for boundaries, could say she had been got out as Sandhu got one to pitch on middle and hit off.

Sinalo Jafta continued the sorry tale of poor dismissals when she attempted an amateurish reverse-sweep to be leg before and Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk completed Sandhu’s rich haul of wickets as the tourists lost 10 wickets for 77 as they were dismissed in 25.5 overs.

Sandhu’s figures were the second best for a Pakistani bowler in ODIs, second only to those of Sajida Shah’s 7/4 against Japan in 2003. She may nevertheless consider her effort the best, given the modest ability of Shah’s opponents.

Proteas Women's batting coach, Baakier Abrahams, has praised the team’s mentality towards their craft with the bat following a successful start to the one-day international (ODI) series against Pakistan and ahead of the third encounter taking place on Monday in Lahore.

The final ODI will get underway at 15h30 local time (12h30 SAST) from the Gaddafi Stadium and will be broadcast live on SuperSport Cricket (Ch. 212).

The Proteas Women head into the series finale on the back of two successful outings against the hosts, recording an eight-wicket victory in the opening match before clinching the three-match battle with a game to spare via a 25-run Duckworth-Lewis-Stern triumph. Both wins were highlighted by outstanding batting performances, including four centuries from Tazmin Brits (2), captain Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Abrahams acknowledged the batters’ display at the crease, pointing out the mindset and work ethic the players have showcased in the build-up to the tour and the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

"That's one thing you've got to commend the ladies about in terms of just their growth mindset and their hunger to want to get better, coupled with the skill development.

"All the performances you're seeing from all the batters is due to the hard work and dedication they've put into their craft and their skill. So long may it continue in terms of their performances and in terms of putting the team into a strong position to win games of cricket,” he added.

Due to the leading performances of the top order, the rest of the batting line-up has had limited time at the crease. Despite that, Abrahams expressed no concern about their readiness and confidence heading into future matches.

"We've also looked at trying to create opportunities for everyone within the space to be able to get an opportunity. Within our line-up, we've got a good host of batters that can go on and do some really special things in terms of hundreds.

"We're pretty confident whichever sort of batting line-up we put out, the skills that they've developed over the last 15 months will stand us in good stead,” Abrahams continued.

When asked about the future of batting in women’s ODI cricket following recent high-scoring matches globally, including Saturday’s match between Australia and India, Abrahams said the team is eager to continue raising the bar.

"Obviously from our side, from a batting unit point of view, we're trying to push the boat out as far as we can. We're also trying to lead the standards in terms of batting and shaping women's cricket.

"And I think seeing that game unfold yesterday is good for the women's game. It just shows it's a nice little something for us to work towards. I think we're tracking in the right direction from our own batting unit and how we want to go about our business.”

With much of the spotlight on the centurions, Abrahams highlighted the strength and depth across the batting order, insisting that others are equally capable of match-defining contributions.

"When the game situation and opportunity present themselves, we do have the skill set of players that are able to do it."

"Even if you go down all the way to Nadine de Klerk, Chloe Tryon, they can get hundreds."

"In terms of impact throughout the line-up, we're very confident in terms of the impact and the volume of runs that they can contribute to the team."

"That all bodes well in terms of competition within the group. That's where we want it to be."

Tazmin Brits’ scintillating 171* dominated a record opening partnership of 260 with captain Laura Wolvaardt as the Proteas Women posted a daunting total of 292-3 before winning the second one-day international against Pakistan by 26 runs in the second one-day international at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday.

Pakistan were bowled out for 287 in 44.4 overs to concede the three-match series 2-0 with the final game to come on Sunday.

Brits finished with a magnificent, career-best 171 not out from just 141 balls – her sixth ODI century – while captain Wolvaardt made exactly 100 from 129 balls with 10 fours displaying all of her characteristic, silky skills.

But the hosts mounted a scintillating response requiring 313 (DLS) to win with Sidra Amin posting a brilliant 122 from just 110 balls (13x4) and Natalia Pervaiz making 73 from 60 balls before the former missed a sweep against Chloe Tryon (10-0-55-2) and the latter was bowled by Nadine de Klerk (6.4-0-45-3).

Marizanne Kapp, as always, was at the forefront of the bowling attack with 2-37 from seven overs while De Klerk recovered from an expensive start to claim vital wickets which changed the course of the match.

BRITS BLITZ

Rain interrupted play after 41 overs with the Proteas on 238-0 and the match was reduced to 46 overs with Brits on 133 and Wolvaardt on 93.

Right hander Brits was unrelenting in her assault against the home team’s battery of four spinners striking 20 fours and four sixes during her second century in consecutive matches following her match-winning, unbeaten 101 in the first match of the series at the same venue on Tuesday in which Kapp also scored an unbeaten 120.

The openers were just six runs short of breaking their own national partnership record for any wicket when the rain came but soon marched past the 243 they added against Bangladesh in Benoni in December 2023 and well past the 224 compiled by Johmari Logtenberg and Mignon du Preez against the Netherlands in 2007.

Pakistan’s decision to include an extra spinner in their starting line-up made little sense when they chose to bowl first on a surface offering little assistance to any of the bowlers and they duly suffered with offspinner Omaima Sohail conceding 36 from just five overs.

Brits’ stroke play undoubtedly contributed to a deteriorating display in the field from Pakistan with misfields, two dropped catches and fluffed run out chances not helping their attempts to curtail the scoring. South Africa, however, more than matched their hosts’ sloppiness with six dropped catches of their own.

Wolvaardt was always happy to play a supporting role while Brits was reverse and slog-sweeping the spinners who had no answer to her power and placement.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Brits praised the team’s unified batting mindset, while emphasising the importance of role clarity at different phases of the innings.

“We’re all buying into the same thing. When you have your different ideas, that’s when plans normally fail. So we’re working on certain things, and it also works according to you as a batter.

“I am a bit of an aggressive player where Wolfie (Laura Wolvaardt) is maybe more the anchor role because she bats longer periods of time. Cricket’s a funny game, sometimes you come off and sometimes you don’t, but we have a target that we set with every powerplay that we try and achieve with maybe losing one or two wickets.

“So whenever you find yourself in that powerplay or outside the powerplay or middle order, you kind of know what you need to do. We’re definitely looking at running hard between the wickets. I think we underestimate that in ODI cricket, if you can turn ones into twos, that’s an extra 30, 40 runs adding to the total, which can definitely change the game.

“So it is about buying into it and we’re all on the same page, and that’s what we’re working for,” the 34-year-old added.

PURPLE PATCH

Brits has been in sparkling form for the Proteas, registering scores of 98* and 101 during the recent tour to the West Indies before carrying that momentum into Pakistan.

When asked about her purple patch, the right-hander admitted there was no secret formula, but expressed gratitude for her current run.

“I don’t know, hey. I actually don’t have an answer for that, to be honest with you. It just seems like things are going my way. So I’m very thankful for that. Hopefully it can continue throughout the World Cup. I mean, I would have rather taken these hundreds in the World Cup than taking them before that, but hopefully with scoring those hundreds, it definitely gives me confidence and I’m hoping that it does continue”.

Another significant area of development for Brits has been her ability to counter spin.

In the first ODI, Pakistan’s attack bowled nearly 30 overs of spin, which Brits and Kapp negotiated expertly during their record-breaking 216-run stand for the third wicket.

Reflecting on the hard work behind the scenes, Brits highlighted the adjustments she has made to her game

“Every batter is very different. For me personally, I had to work very, very hard on spin and strike rotation. I like seam, so I like to climb into a seamer, but we’ve put a lot of work in.

“There were times that I had to travel to PE, for argument’s sake, to Bakes (Baakier Abrahams), our batting coach. I had to get out of my comfort zone. I’ve been working on extra shots, I’ve been working on head positioning, I even changed my batting grip literally just before West Indies. So there are a few things that you’ve got to get uncomfortable with to become comfortable,” she added

Marizanne Kapp and Tazmin Brits cracked fantastic unbeaten centuries to help power the Proteas women to a comfortable eight-wicket win over Pakistan in the opening one-day International (ODI) of their three match series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday afternoon.

Kapp crunched her way to 121* off 128 balls, slamming 13 fours and two sixes, while Brits struck 101* off 121 (9x4), as their stunning unbeaten 216-run third-wicket partnership led them past their 256-run target with 10 balls to spare.

It is a great start to the series for the Proteas, which is a build up for both teams for the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, which gets under way at the end of the month, and they play two more matches at the same ground on Friday and Monday.

It was a tough innings, but Taz helped there, it was a brilliant innings from her as well. We saw the way Pakistan came out and played, so we knew if we gave ourselves a chance and got used to the pace it would become easier. So we knew if we could stick in we would be able to catch up,” said Kapp after the match.

Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt added: “We were happy restricting them to 255, at one stage we thought they would score 280-300, but I think we had a really good death (bowling) spell.

“They were absolutely amazing, Taz and Kappie were phenomenal (with the bat) and we could have watched them all day, it was amazing.”

The Proteas chase got off to a rocky start as Wolvaardt (4) perished in the second over, playing down the wrong line to a ball from Sadia Iqbal that didn’t turn and went straight on to knock back her off stump, leaving them on 5-1.

That brought Sune Luus, 30 off 35 (7x4), to the crease and after taking nine balls to get on the board, she then looked comfortable in cracking seven boundaries, before she also misjudged a ball that didn’t spin and got trapped LBW by Rameen Shamim, leaving the Proteas on 43-2 in the 10th over.

DUO DOMINATES

Kapp was next in and along with Brits they proceeded to dominate the Pakistan bowlers over the rest of the match, with the Proteas' 50 coming up in the 11th over, and their 100 in the 24th, as Kapp targeted Iqbal, hammering her for a four and a six.

Brits was the first to fifty, with a boundary off Nashra Sandhu bringing it up in the 27th over, followed by Kapp in the 29th with a single off Shamim.

The Proteas moved past 150 in the 30th over and cruised past 200 in the 38th, with the batters looking completely untroubled.

Kapp then showed some nerves after reaching 99, as she saw out a maiden 44th over from Diana Baig, before bringing up her fourth ODI hundred with a single off Fatima Sana in the next.

Brits also had a heart in mouth moment on 99, after quick reactions from bowler Sana almost had her run out, but the third umpire adjudged her to have just got her bat back in time, which allowed her to knock a single off the next ball to reach three figures in the 47th over, with the Proteas getting over the line at the start of the 49th.

AMIN ANCHORS PAKISTAN

At the start of play Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat, with an unbeaten century from Sidra Amin helping them post 255-4 in their 50 overs.

The hosts were powered by Amin, 121 off 150 balls (12x4), and opener Muneeba Ali, 76 off 94 balls (11x4), with their 147-run second-wicket partnership producing the lion’s share of runs.

However, they would have felt they finished a few runs short, as with wickets in hand they were unable to maximise in the final overs after some solid death bowling from the Proteas restricted them in the end.

The Proteas enjoyed a strong start to the match, thanks to Ayabonga Khaka striking in the second over, having opener Shawaal Zulfiqar caught behind by keeper Sinalo Jafta for a third-ball duck, with the score 3-1.

But that brought Amin to the crease and along with Ali they set about their big partnership to put their side into a strong position, although they started cautiously, reaching 39-1 after 10 overs.

They eventually started to pick up the rate, crossing 50 in the 14th over, before Ali reached her half century in the 20th over, the 100 came up in the 21st, and Amin reached her fifty with a boundary off Nonkululeko Mlaba at the start of the 23rd.

Strangely, Khaka had only bowled three overs up front, but was finally brought back in the 29th over, and her second over back, the 31st, saw the breakthrough as just after Pakistan reached 150, she trapped Ali LBW.

Aliya Riaz, 33 off 34 (5x4), announced her arrival at the crease with a first-ball boundary and she looked to play positively as they tried to up the scoring rate, Pakistan passing 200 in the 40th over.

But bad judgment from Riaz then ended a promising 68-run partnership with her run out by Nondumiso Shangase and Jafta in the 43rd over as they slipped to 218-3.

That became 223-4 in the next over as new batter Fatima Sana (3) popped an easy catch to Mlaba at mid-off off the bowling of Tumi Sekhukhune as the Proteas fought back.

Pakistan were then unable to even go at a run-a-ball down the back straight, despite Amin reaching her fifth ODI century with a single at the end of the 44th over as the Proteas bowlers kept it tight, only allowing them 29 runs off the last six overs of the innings.

Khaka, with 2-36 off her nine overs, was the pick of the SA bowlers, while Sekhkukhune, 1-37 off eight, and Marizanne Kapp, only going for 20 runs in her seven overs, also impressed.

Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt has underlined the significance of the upcoming one-day international (ODI) series against Pakistan, with the opening fixture taking place on Tuesday in Lahore.

The first of three ODIs will get underway at 15h30 local time (12h30 SAST) at the Gaddafi Stadium and will be broadcast live on SuperSport Cricket (Ch. 212).

Speaking in her pre-match press conference, Wolvaardt highlighted the value of playing in subcontinental conditions ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India and Sri Lanka.

“This series is super crucial for us. Obviously, heading into the World Cup, getting to be in the subcontinent before is a massive opportunity.

“Getting used to conditions, getting used to how hot it is, obviously coming from winter at home, it's been a bit of an adjustment. And just to play cricket together again as a group. We've last played together maybe five, six weeks ago, so just to get some momentum leading into a big tournament like that will be huge,” the opening batter added.

South Africa hold a dominant record over Pakistan in ODI cricket, winning 21 of the 28 encounters between the two nations, with five defeats, one tie and one no result. Their most recent series meeting came in Karachi in 2023, when the visitors secured a 2-1 triumph.

Despite their track record, Wolvaardt is anticipating another testing contest against Fatima Sana’s Pakistan side, with the Proteas Women returning for a white-ball series in the country for a third successive year.

“They're a really good side. We've had some good battles coming here the last couple of seasons. We've been here three Septembers in a row now, and it's a side we really like playing against and that we have really good challenges and battles against. In their conditions, it suits their attack with the ball, so we'll have to play some good cricket if we want to win the series.”

Looking ahead to the three matches, Wolvaardt noted that the team will aim to strike a balance between securing victories and giving the full squad valuable game time in preparation for the World Cup.

“All squad members should get a go in this series. The ODI World Cup is a long time, so I need to get everyone exposed to playing a bit of cricket. We'll still be looking to put out very strong playing XIs, and to win the series is our main goal, but having everyone get a run in the series will be important.”
