Proteas Men’s fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the second test against Sri Lanka and the upcoming all-format tour against Pakistan due to a groin injury.

The 24-year-old experienced discomfort while bowling on day four of the first test at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Saturday. Results of the scan revealed a right groin muscle strain. His recovery period is estimated to be between four to six weeks.

Uncapped DP World Lions fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been added to the squad for the second test, which will get underway at Dafabet St George’s Park in Gqeberha from 05 - 09 December.

A splendid exhibition of spin bowling by Prenelan Subrayen gave South Africa A (SA ‘A’) the advantage before Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) fought back to leave the second and final unofficial test finely poised after three days of action at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Tuesday.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins star claimed 6-64 in 22 overs to turn the game on its head and bowl out the tourists for 319 – an innings deficit of 15 – before the hosts then reached stumps on 112 for three.

That gave them a lead of 127 with every result possible on Wednesday, the final day of the series.

It was a good comeback from the South Africans after they were put under pressure for a large part of the day by Lahiru Udara, who completed an excellent century.

The opener struck 129 (192 balls, 16 fours, 1 six) and was the mainstay for his side, carrying them from their overnight score of 134 for two to 236 for two.

He put on 179 for the third wicket with his captain Pasindu Sooriyabandara (92 off 166 balls, 9 fours, 1 six), before home skipper Neil Brand (2-45) finally claimed the first wicket of the day when he bowled the former.

The latter continued to thwart SA as he added a further 36 with Janith Liyanage (14) to carry his side to 272 for three.

But that was when the Subrayen show began, with the off-break bowler claiming six of the remaining seven wickets to ensure his side ended the innings with a lead.

In all, Sri Lanka lost their last seven wickets for 47 to gift the home side a slight advantage at the changeover.

But three wickets – Brand (7), Tshepang Dithole (19) and Marques Ackerman (6) – were lost early in the second innings to leave South Africa in trouble on 68 for three, just 83 runs ahead at that stage.

However, a vital unbroken 44-run fourth-wicket partnership between Jean du Plessis (45*) and Dewald Brevis (29*) lead the recovery, giving their side the chance to force a result on day four.

Lahiru Udara’s unbeaten half-century led the Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) fightback on a shortened day two of the second and final unofficial test against South Africa A (SA ‘A’) at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Monday.

The opener hit 61 off 110 balls (10 fours) to lead the tourists to 134 for two when bad light and rain forced a premature end to proceedings after the tea interval.

It meant that SL ‘A’ had closed to within 200 of the home side, who earlier lost their last three wickets for just 18 runs thanks to the visiting seamers.

The South Africans had resumed the second morning with captain Neil Brand still in the middle, unbeaten on his overnight 122.

But after adding just seven to his tally, he fell to Eshan Malinga (3-68) for 129 off 253 balls (12 fours, 1 six).

Prenelan Subrayen was then cleaned up by Isitha Wijesundera (2-60) for a duck, before Migael Pretorius fell to the same bowler for 19.

South Africa’s own seamers then accounted for two Sri Lanakan wickets relatively cheaply.

Beyers Swanepoel (1-41) was first to strike when he had Nuwanidu Fernando caught by Tshepang Dithole for 11 and the miserly Mihlali Mpongwana (1-12) then got rid of Pavan Rathnayake (15).

At 57 for two, the hosts would have felt confident. But captain Pasindu Sooriyabandara then walked in and struck an unbeaten 43 to repel the home side.

By the close he had added an unbroken 77 with Udara for the third wicket to leave the game in the balance at halfway.

An unbeaten century by captain Neil Brand ensured South Africa A (SA ‘A’) held a slight advantage after the opening day of the second unofficial test against Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday.

The left-hander carried his bat for 122 (243 balls, 11 fours, 1 six) to ensure his side was in a solid position in the series finale, reaching the close on 316 for seven.

The match is a must-win encounter for the hosts after they lost the opening match by six wickets in Kimberley.

Apart from Brand, there were also starts for Tshepang Dithole (27), Marques Ackerman (37), Dewald Brevis (49) and Beyers Swanepoel (34) after the home side lost the toss and were asked to bat first.

The skipper, alongside Dithole, put on 41 for the opening wicket, before the South Africans lost the latter and Jean du Plessis (0) within the space of a run.

Ackerman then joined Brand for a third-wicket stand of 62, followed by the biggest partnership of the innings between Brevis and his captain that yielded 98 for the fourth wicket.

The home side may feel they then surrendered some of the initiative after slipping from 202 for three in the 53rd over to their eventual end-of-play score.

The other men to fall were Mihlali Mpongwana (12), Rivaldo Moonsamy (11) and Swanepoel, leaving Migael Pretorius (9*) keeping Brand company at the close.

Sri Lanka’s best bowler on the day was slow left-armer Sonal Dinusha, who bagged three for 48.

Oshada Fernando played a second crucial innings of the match to help Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) overcome South Africa A (SA ‘A’) by six wickets on the final day of the first unofficial test at the Kimberley Oval in Kimberley on Wednesday.

The right-hander, who hit 122 in the first innings, made a vital 80 off 122 balls (12 fours) on day four, to carry his side to their 174-run target and into a 1-0 series lead.

He was there at the start of proceedings when the visitors resumed on 34 for one, ensuring his side held their nerve after suffering an early blow when Codi Yusuf (2-29) dismissed Nuwanidu Fernando for a seven-ball duck.

That left the score on 36 for two and with the door open for the hosts.

But Oshada and captain Pasindu Sooriyabandara (22) dug in by sharing a stand of 46 in just over 16 overs for the third wicket to take their side to 82, before the skipper was bowled by Prenenlan Subrayen (1-34).

Janith Liyanage joined Oshada and the pair continued to thwart the home side as they added 66 for the next wicket to all but seal the game.

By the time the latter was unseated by Migael Pretorius (1-38) only 26 more runs were needed and Sonal Dinusha got 14 of those runs to carry the Sri Lankans safely home.

The second and final unofficial test begins in Benoni on Sunday.

Beyers Swanepoel starred with bat and ball but South Africa A (SA ‘A’) still found themselves in a difficult position after the penultimate day of the first unofficial test against Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) at the Kimberley Oval on Tuesday.

The seamer claimed four for 52 in 20.5 overs to help the hosts bowl out the visitors for 323 – a lead of 49 – but they themselves then stumbled to 124 all out.

It could have been far worse but for Swanepoel top-scoring with 38 as Ishitha Wijesundara wreaked havoc with fine figures of seven for 34. The South Africans did manage to claim a wicket late in the day when Sri Lanka faced 9.5 overs to reach 34 for one chasing 174 for victory.

But it left the home side with a big task on the final day to turn the tables.

DISASTROUS 2ND INNINGS

At the start of day three, the visitors fell from 232 for four overnight to be bowled out for a further 91.

Swanepoel was excellent with his medium pace, with Prenelan Subrayen bagging two for 63. Sonal Dinusha (36) and Vishad Randika (35) were the key contributors for the away side.

The second innings for the hosts began in the worst possible fashion after captain Neil Brand was out for a third-ball duck. Only Marques Ackerman (27) among the top order managed a meaningful contribution as they still stumbled to 69 for seven.

A 45-run partnership between Swanepoel and Migael Pretorius (7) at least allowed them to cross 100 and bolster the target to a defendable total.

By the close, though, Sri Lanka reduced the target to 140 for the loss of key batter Lahiru Udara for 26 as he fell to Codi Yusuf (1/8) with what proved to be the final ball of the day.

Matthew Breetzke struck an unbeaten century as South Africa A (SA ‘A’) enjoyed a productive opening day to the first unofficial test against Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) at the Kimberley Oval in Kimberley on Sunday.

The right-hander batted for the better part of day one facing 177 deliveries and striking 11 boundaries in an innings of 112* to help his side reach the close on 294 for four.

There were also impressive performances from Tshepang Dithole and Marques Ackerman, who both hit half-centuries in the Northern Cape where the home side had won the toss and opted to bat first in good conditions.

Seasoned opener Dithole led from the front with a patient 52 off 130 balls (7 fours) that gave the hosts a solid start.

He put on 62 for the opening wicket alongside captain Neil Brand (39), who was first to fall to Nishan Peiris (1/73).

Left-hander Dithole then put on 79 with Breetzke for the second wicket to put the South Africans firmly in control at 141 for one midway through the day.

After the departure of the former to pick of the bowlers Eshan Malinga (2/49), the latter went on to put on 108 for the third wicket alongside the impressive Ackerman (69 off 97 balls, 10 fours).

Though Ackerman then fell followed by Sinethemba Qeshile for two, Breetzke remained focused and went on to complete his century before the close with the home side well-placed in Kimberley.

A remarkable career-best of 188 by David Bedingham helped South Africa A (SA ‘A’) end their three-match one-day series against Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) on a high with a five-wicket win at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

The Proteas batter struck 20 fours and five sixes in a fine 129-ball display that saw him carry his bat as the hosts chased down 309 with more than seven overs to spare.

Though the tourists were already 2-0 up in the series, the result ensured the home side at least won back some pride – and confidence going into the red-ball leg of the tour starting at the weekend.

The home side bowled first for the third consecutive game at the start with the Sri Lankans winning the toss and batting at the toss.

Lahiru Udara (90 off 94 balls, 10 fours, 1 six), Nuwanidu Fernando (52 off 52 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) and Chamindu Wickramasinghe (70* off 54 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes) all impressed with half-centuries for their side.

But there were some impressive showings with the ball too for the hosts, led by a four-wicket haul for Dewald Brevis (4-46). Dayyaan Galiem (1-22) and Trista Luus (1-34) also claimed a wicket apiece.

Faced with a mammoth target, Bedingham showed his class by delivering his best performance of the series and one that easily surpassed his previous best score of 152 in List A cricket.

He first put on an opening stand of 104 in just 9.1 overs with Tony de Zorzi (25), before adding 99 with captain Matther Breetzke (36) for the second wicket. Those two partnerships left SA ‘A’ on 203 inside halfway and Meeka-eel Prince (31) offered his hand for the last important stand – 71 for the fourth wicket – to take the hosts home with 43 balls to spare.

South Africa A lost five wickets for 45 runs to miss the chance of squaring their one-day series with Sri Lanka A and instead went down by 30 runs in match two at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Monday.

The result meant the tourists claimed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game sequence.

But the hosts will no doubt be ruing what may have been after a Matthew Breetzke’s top-score, an assured 74 off 80 balls (4 fours, 1 six) had left them in a relatively good position at 194 for five in the 33rd over of the chase – needing just 76 more to win.

But Dushan Hemantha’s five for 48 proved key to turning the game upside down as the visitors closed out the game by bowling the home side out for 239 with 8.5 overs to spare.

It was a disappointing end to the game and means that match three on Wednesday will be a dead rubber.

However, things could have been so much better for the hosts after they had restricted SL ‘A’ to 269 for seven when they won the toss and opted to bat first.

Andile’s Simelane (2/24) and Phehlukwayo (2/51) took two wickets each, while there was also a strike each for Senuran Muthusamy (1/36), Codi Yusuf (1/61) and Nqaba Peter (1/58) in an improved display with the ball by the South Africans after match one where they conceded nearly 300.

Lahiru Udara (86 off 95 balls, 11 fours, 1 six) and Sahan Arachchige (52 off 56 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) top-scored for the Sri Lankans.

Then in reply, Meeka eel Prince (44) and Muthusamy (37) helped the hosts recover from the early loss of David Bedingham (7) to reach 93 for one and then 149 for two thanks to Breetzke also at the other end.

But things went wrong from there as regular wickets hampered their progress. Simelane (27) and Phehlukwayo (24) again did their bit in trying to rescue the game, but Hemantha’s five cut open the tail and took the away side to what proved to be a comfortable win.

Tony de Zorzi struck a half-century and Andile Phehlukwayo claimed three wickets but it was not enough to prevent South Africa A (SA ‘A’) from going down to Sri Lanka A (SL ‘A’) in game one of their one-day series at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

The hosts lost by 93 runs despite promising performances by the Proteas pair. Allrounder Phehlukwayo was first to impress after he claimed 3-38 in 10 overs, ripping through the visitors’ middle-order, though they still managed to amass 298 for nine.

In reply, batter De Zorzi recorded an attacking 53 (48 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes) as the home side stuttered along and were eventually dismissed for 205 inside 37 overs.

There were starts for several other players too, but spinners Dushan Hemantha (3/34) and Wanuja Sahan (3/41) proved key with their six wickets ensuring SL ‘A’ stormed to a big win.

After winning the toss and bowling first in the North West, the hosts struggled to contain the Sri Lankan batters, who had Kamil Mishara (71 off 75 balls, 9 fours, 1 six), Nuwanidu Fernando (97 off 101 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) and Chamindu Wickramasinghe (55 off 39 balls, 4 fours, 3 sixes) to thank for their sizable total.

Barring Phehlukwayo’s excellent spell, which included going for 3.80 runs per over, all the other bowlers conceded more than five to the over, leaving the opposition well-placed at halfway.

The South Africans then lost key man David Bedingham for 13 early on, before captain Matthew Breetzke (28) helped rebuild alongside De Zorzi.

Dewald Brevis managed 39, and even though there were decent efforts by Meeka-eel Prince (24) and Eathan Bosch (32*), the home side lost wickets too regularly and were bowled out with well over 10 overs to spare.

Match two in the three-match series takes place on Monday at the same venue.
