Morocco secured their record third African Nations Championship title on Saturday as Oussama Lamlioui's late strike grabbed a dramatic 3-2 final victory over Madagascar in Nairobi.

Felicite Manohatsoa's long-range strike gave first-time finalists Madagascar a surprise lead in the ninth minute.

But Youssef Mehri broke clear of the Malagasy defence to level in the 27th minute, to the delight of the majority of the capacity crowd in the Kenyan capital.

Berkane forward Lamlioui put the Atlas Lions in front for the first time shortly before the interval.

Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe, who scored an extra-time winner in Madagascar's semifinal victory over Sudan, drew his side level midway through the second half.

But Lamlioui, who finished as the tournament's top scorer with six goals, struck with 10 minutes remaining to complete his double and ensure Morocco matched their title wins from the 2018 and 2020 editions.

The result continues a great year for Moroccan football, after their youth sides won the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the final of the Under-20 tournament.

The North African country is preparing to host the senior Afcon for the first time since 1988, with this year's event set to get underway on December 21.

Morocco have an unprecedented third African Nations Championship (Chan) title in their sights on Saturday when they play Madagascar in the final at Nairobi's Kasarani stadium.

The month-long championship, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, saw all three hosts fail to advance past the quarterfinals in the 19-team competition.

But the tournament, in which only players who have never competed for international clubs can participate, has been a bigger success than many expected.

Major delays in stadium constructions had forced organisers to postpone it for several months from its original dates in February, and the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) gave the green light only weeks before it began.

But once underway, the precursor to the 2027 African Cup of Nations has run smoothly and seen a huge spectator turn-out.

Kenya, the host of Saturday's final, was even fined by CAF for allowing crowds to breach capacity during the home team's matches at Kasarani stadium.

Morocco's Atlas Lions won in 2018 and 2020, and have made it through to the latest final after surviving a dramatic semifinal penalty shootout against defending champions Senegal.

They now face Madagascar, playing in its first-ever Confederation of African Football (CAF) final.

Morocco's shock defeat to Kenya in the group stage was a wake-up call.

Despite travelling more than any team in the championship – shuttling between all three host nations – Morocco managed to score 14 goals, and had the most shots on target.

"Our goal is always to win this trophy," coach Tarik Sektioui, a former international winger, told reporters ahead of the semifinal.

Forward Oussama Lamlioui has been a potent threat, scoring four goals to lead the Golden Boot race.

Madagascar finished third after debuting in the 2022 tournament, but will be without their two-goal hero Fenohasina Gilles Razafimaro, suspended after receiving a red card during the semifinal match against Sudan in Dar es Salaam.

Razafimaro's striking partnership with Toky Rakotongraibe, supported by midfielder Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa, has been integral to the team's success.

It is unclear whether Andy Rakotondrajoa will play, after the attacking midfielder suffered a knock and was taken off during the semifinal.

Madagascar's veteran goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa has been one of the tournament's stars, with 25 saves and three clean sheets.

Ramandimbisoa, 39, was twice voted man of the match for his heroics – against the Central African Republic in the group stage and Kenya in the quarterfinal, where he made two crucial saves.

"We are very proud to have him with us," said coach Romuald Rakotondrabe.

"He has really helped us in every match and we hope he can go into the next game with the same spirit."

The Lions of Teranga had looked sharp but fell behind after just six minutes when Mohamed Tia Asad put Sudan ahead from a corner.

Senegal pushed hard against a tight Sudanese defence and were rewarded just before the hour when Seyni Mbaye latched onto a right cross from Ousseynou Seck for the equaliser.

Sudan missed a golden opportunity to grab the winner with eight minutes to go when Maaz Koko let a chance slip while alone on front of the goal.

In the ensuing shoot out, Senegal converted through Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse and Libasse Gueye. Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen failed to get the target for the losers.

The bronze medal was a consolation for Senegal after the defending champions lost 5-3 on penalties to Morocco in the semifinals on Tuesday after the two sides drew 1-1.

Ten-man Madagascar produced a dramatic extra-time winner to beat Sudan 1-0 in Dar es Salaam and book their place in their first ever African Nations Championship (Chan) final.

The Barea, who finished third in their only previous appearance three years ago, will face Morocco who edged Senegal 5-3 on penalties after the two sides drew 1-1 at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

Madagascar had a better start when they dominated possession before a sparse Benjamin Mkapa Stadium crowd and created two early chances but the first half ended goalless.

Sudan, appearing in their third semifinal after near-misses in 2011 and 2018, had the better chances in the second half with Walieldin Khidir missing a gilt-edged header in the 53rd minute.

The match appeared to swing inexorably in Sudan's direction in the 79th minute when Madagascar's Fenohasina Razafimaro, who scored the quarterfinal equaliser against Kenya to send the match into penalties, was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Sudan used their one-man advantage to launch a barrage of attacks but were unable to make a breakthrough as the match finished 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.

It looked to be heading for a penalty shoot-out until substitute Toky Rakotondraibe pounced in the 116th minute, drilling the ball past goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja to send Madagascar through and dash Sudan's hopes of reaching their first final.

"Our strength lies in unity," said Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe. "Today, the players kept believing until the very end, and this victory belongs to them and to Madagascar."

Saturday's final in Nairobi will pit Madagascar against the vastly more experienced Moroccans who reached their third Chan final in seven years with victory over Senegal on penalties in Kampala.

"It was a tough match against the defending champions but the players showed composure in the key moments," said Morocco coach Tarik Sektioui.

"We have fought hard to reach this stage, and now we want to win the trophy again."

It was the first ever Chan meeting between the two African giants and it was Senegal, the defending champions, who drew first blood when defender Joseph Layousse headed home from close range.

But seven minutes later Morocco levelled when Sabir Bougrine lashed home a fierce shot from outside the penalty area that flew into the top corner. It was his second goal of the tournament.

Morocco's Marouane Louadni was shown a straight red card for fouling Vieux Cisse but the decision was overturned.

With extra time closing with the sides still locked at 1-1, it was down to the penalty-takers.

Senegal faltered when captain Seyni N'Diaye struck the crossbar with their opening effort while Morocco converted all five of their penalties to stamp their ticket for a date in Nairobi on Saturday.

Sudan entered the African Nations Championships (Chan) as rank outsiders – its home league is almost nonexistent in a country ripped apart by civil war, and the squad had only a few days training together.

Yet the Falcons of Jediane have defied the odds to reach the semifinals of Chan in which teams can only select from players in their national league competitions.

Sudan has a domestic league, but only just.

Sudan had not held a meaningful domestic league competition since the outbreak of conflict in 2023 between the country's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has killed tens of thousands.

The country's two most successful clubs, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh, have been playing some 5 000 kilometres to the west in the Mauritanian league.

Following a lull in the fighting earlier this year, they returned and joined six other clubs for a month-long Sudan Elite league.

The mini-league was organised by African football's governing body, CAF, to enable Sudan select clubs for the continental championships next season. It also created a Chan squad.

That squad had only four days to train before their arrival at Chan, with Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah openly fearing his players could not be competitive with so little practice.

But the side found a way through, drawing twice and whipping Nigeria 4-0 to top their group.

Their quarterfinal against Algeria also ended level but Sudan won 4-2 on penalties.

Sudan have matched their previous best in 2011 when they hosted the tournament and reached the last four.

Midfielder Abdel Raouf attributes the team's success to the technical staff led by Appiah, the former Ghana national team coach.

"The secret is simple: teamwork," Raouf, who has scored two goals, told CAFOnline.

"Everyone in this squad is working towards one goal – to lift Sudan high on the African stage."

Goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja, who saved two spot-kicks against Algeria, praised Appiah.

"The way he gives instructions, the way he motivates us," said Abooja. "He is always so calm, and that helps us a lot"

Under Appiah's guidance, Sudan have also made the cut for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and are lying third in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group, one point off leaders DR Congo.

- 'LAST TEAM STANDING' -

Their quarterfinal win has not only been celebrated in Sudan but across the region, coming after the trio of hosts Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya all failed to progress to the next round.

"It was a sad night for the east African teams who were not lucky to survive in the quarterfinals," said Kenyan sports journalist Elias Makori.

"But Sudan have saved the face (of) east Africans by becoming the last team standing."

Sudan face Madagascar, the quarterfinal conquerors of Kenya, in the first semifinal in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Tuesday.

Morocco meet Senegal in the second semifinal at Kampala's Mandela Stadium. The final will be played at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on August 30.

CHAMPIONS FACE ATLAS LIONS IN HEAVYWEIGHT CLASH

Senegal underlined their title credentials with a 1-0 victory over Uganda in Kampala.

In front of more than 35 000 fans at the Mandela National Stadium, the Lions of Teranga were pushed to the limit by a spirited Cranes side but struck decisively through Oumar Ba in the 62nd minute.

Uganda, who had qualified for the knockout stage of Chan for the first time in their history, enjoyed more possession and created more chances but could not find the finishing touch.

Senegal’s defensive organisation once again proved decisive, with Seyni Ndiaye commanding the back line and goalkeeper Marc Diouf producing vital interventions late on.

That victory set up a semifinal against Morocco, who edged co-hosts Tanzania 1-0 in Dar es Salaam.

Oussama Lamlaoui scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half, tucking in his fourth of the tournament from a clever assist by Youssef Belammari.

The Atlas Lions absorbed heavy pressure in front of a packed 41 000-strong Benjamin Mkapa Stadium but showed composure and tactical discipline to hold firm.

Despite missing key defenders Bouchaib El Arsi, Marouane El Ouedni and Abdelhak Assal, coach Tarik Sektioui’s men extended their remarkable knockout-stage record, having now won seven consecutive Chan elimination matches since 2014.

It means Kampala will host a meeting of two of the competition’s true heavyweights: holders Senegal against Morocco, champions in 2018 and 2020.

SUDAN STUN ALGERIA TO KEEP FAIRYTALE ALIVE

If Senegal and Morocco represent the established elite, Sudan continue to write one of Chan 2024’s most remarkable stories.

An own goal by Algeria’s Ayoub Ghezala handed Sudan the lead, only for Soufiane Bayazid to equalise.

But in the shoot-out, goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja was the hero, saving twice as Sudan triumphed 4-2.

It was a performance that reinforced Sudan’s reputation as a side reborn under the Ghanaian coach. Appiah himself was bullish afterwards, insisting his players “will not stop here” as they aim to reach their first Chan final.

Their opponents will be Madagascar, another side with a growing reputation as giant-killers.

The Barea silenced a full Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi by knocking out debutants Kenya on penalties.

After Alphonce Omija had headed Kenya into the lead, Madagascar equalised from the spot through Fenohasina Razafimaro before eventually holding their nerve to win 4-3 in the shoot-out.

Goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa, already one of the stars of the competition at 39 years old, made two crucial saves, while Toky Rakotondraibe converted the winning kick.

HOSTS BOW OUT BUT TOURNAMENT DELIVERS

For the three host nations, the quarterfinals proved a painful end to campaigns that had generated huge public excitement.

Kenya’s debut run ended in heartbreak, Tanzania’s fairytale was halted by Morocco, and Uganda’s historic breakthrough was dashed by the holders.

But each provided drama and packed stadiums that captured the imagination of fans across the continent.

The semifinals now promise two fascinating contrasts: one a heavyweight duel between champions past and present, the other a battle of surprise packages determined to continue their fairytales.

Madagascar beat Kenya on penalties on Friday to reach the African Nations Championships (Chan) semifinals and end the host nation's remarkable run.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time but the dominant islanders held their nerve to win a dramatic shootout 4-3.

After a goalless first half, Alphonce Omija had given Kenya a deserved lead three minutes into the second half. The hosts would have added a second only for Ryan Ogam's strike to be ruled offside.

Madagascar fought back to level scores in the 69th minute when Gilles Razafimaro stepped up from the spot after midfielder Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa was brought crashing down in the box.

The two sides tried for a breakthrough but neither could find the winner.

Toky Rakotondraibe converted the decisive penalty in the shootout for Madagascar after Omija had missed for the Kenyans.

In Dar es Salaam, two-time champions Morocco pipped Tanzania 1-0 in the second quarterfinal to complete a heartbreaking night for the tournament co-hosts.

Oussama Lamlioui scored the all-important goal in the 65th minute to take his tally to four goals and make him the tournament top scorer.

Tanzania pushed for an equaliser but Morocco held their nerve to reach the semifinal and keep alive hope of capturing the title for a third time.

The second pair of quarterfinals will be played on Saturday.

Co-hosts Uganda face defending champions Senegal in Kampala while Sudan face Algeria at the Amaan stadium in Zanzibar.

Defending champions Senegal booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championship (Chan) on Tuesday alongside Sudan after the pair played out a 0-0 draw at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

With Nigeria besting Congo-Brazzaville in Group D's other tie, a draw was enough to see Sudan top the pool on goal difference ahead of the Senegalese.

In an otherwise uninspiring encounter, Sudan thought they had the chance to nail down their spot as group winners when they were initially awarded a spot-kick two minutes before the interval.

Zimbabwean referee Brighton Chimene had pointed to the spot after Senegalese striker Oumar Ba pushed Sudan midfielder Walieldin Khedr from behind inside the box, but the decision was overturned by VAR.

Senegal were reduced to 10 men in second-half stoppage time when midfielder Mbaye Yaya Ly was shown a second yellow for a hard tackle on Mohamed Al Rashed.

Sudan will face Algeria in the quarterfinals on August 23, while Senegal take on Uganda.

At the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, already-eliminated Nigeria beat 10-man Congo 2-0 to end their miserable campaign on a winning note.

Goals from Anas Yusuf in the 56th minute and Sikiru Alimi in the 93rd restored some order for the Super Eagles following two back-to-back defeats against Senegal and Sudan.

Defeat meant Congo failed to progress as they finished bottom of the group on two points.

While South Africa stared qualification to the knockout round in the eye, two late penalties by the host nation crushed Bafana Bafana’s hopes of winning the tournament altogether.

The game commenced at a slow pace at the Mandela National Stadium, while South Africa edged their opponents to the ball possession count slightly. Neither side created any clear goal scoring opportunities with around 12 minutes on the clock.

Uganda came close to scoring in the 14th minute after left-back Herbert Achayi struck the upright after making way up the pitch. With Achayi’s shot wowing the Crane’s fans, Uganda kept pushing for an opener.

The Cranes took the lead moments after the half-hour mark as Jude Ssemugabi added his name to the scoreboard. After a free-kick scenario in their own half, Uganda swiftly turned defence into attack while Ssemugabi capped off a well-worked counter.

Uganda managed to preserve their lead at the break, however, South Africa were first to pounce after the restart. South Africa added a third in the 83rd minute, with a classy lob by Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo following a rapid counter-attacking move.

Bafana then conceded a penalty soon after getting their third goal, which was converted by Allan Okello in the 88th minute.

Controversy erupted at Mandela National Stadium during stoppage time after the VAR officials were alerted to a possible handball inside the Bafana box. After the VAR officials were unsure of the outcome, the referee decided to award Uganda with a penalty after having a look at the pitch side monitor.

Co-hosts Kenya held their nerve to beat Zambia 1-0 on Sunday and reach the African Nations Championship quarterfinals on their tournament debut.

Kenya finished top of Group A thanks to striker Ryan Ogam's 75th-minute goal in Nairobi.

Morocco grabbed second place in the group and a last-eight berth courtesy of a 3-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in a winner-takes-all clash.

Berkane forward Oussama Lamlioui scored in the eighth minute to put Morocco, who were level on six points with their opponents before kick-off, into the lead.

The DRC responded through Jephte Kitambala when he fired home for his second goal of the tournament shortly before halftime.

Two-time champions Morocco retook the lead through a Mohamed Hrimat penalty with 20 minutes remaining, before Lamlioui put the game to bed in the 80th minute.

Kenya will face Madagascar in the last eight while Morocco will play co-hosts Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Friday.

Madagascar joined Tanzania in the quarterfinals of the African Nations championships (Chan) on Saturday as both advanced from group B.

Co-hosts Tanzania finished top of the group despite a goalless draw against the Central African Republic.

The single point took Tanzania to 10, while newcomers Central African Republic finished bottom of the group with one point.

South Africa battled out a goalless draw with Niger while Algeria came from behind to hold Guinea 1-1 to throw wide open Group C ahead of the final matches.

Algeria were staring at defeat and elimination against hard-fighting Guinea when MC Alger star Sofiane Bayazid salvaged the point for the 2023 losing finalists.

Ismael Camara had put Guinea into a 62nd minute lead after combining with Alhassane Bangoura.

Bangoura, who scored Guinea's winning goal against Niger in the opening match, came close with his own attempt shortly after, but his final effort lacked the punch.

Bayazid then levelled with two minutes remaining to double his goal tally and salvage the point for the Desert Foxes who need to win the last match to progress.

Algeria will travel to Nairobi to play Niger who have only collected one from three matches while the tournament co-hosts, Uganda face South Africa in Kampala.

Two-time champions Morocco and DR Congo clawed their way back into quarterfinal contention with wins over Zambia and Angola in the African Nations championships (Chan) on Thursday.

Morocco crushed Zambia 3-1, while DR Congo needed two second-half goals to defeat Angola.

The Zambian back line sustained high pressure as Morocco dominated the early proceedings at the Nyayo National Stadium but the North Africans failed to cash in on three clear chances.

The Atlas Lions took the lead in first-half injury time when captain Mohamed Hrimat got onto Youssef Mehri's outswinging corner.

Defender Happy Nsiku appeared to have levelled for Zambia in the 65th minute but he was denied after a VAR review confirmed an infringement in the build-up to the goal.

Oussama Lamlaoui then capitalised on the confusion to grab Morocco's second just a minute later, before substitute Andrew Phiri pulled one back for Zambia on 70 minutes.

Midfielder Sabir Bougrine's stoppage-time strike sent Morocco to second place in Group A with six points, only a point behind leaders Kenya.

Fellow two-time winners DR Congo beat Angola 2-0 to end their opponents' hopes of progression in the tournament.

Runners-up in 2011, Angola needed victory in their last group match to challenge Kenya at the top of the table, but two second-half goals put paid to those hopes.

Jephte Kitambala and Mokonzi Katumbwe capped an impressive display for the Congolese, as they kept alive their chances of a place in the quarterfinals.

The Menas are currently placed fifth in the group standings without a single point and they will be desperate to record their first victory of the tournament against South Africa and keep their knockout phase dream alive.

Abdoul-Latif Goumey, Niger: The 20-year-old attacker is one of the Menas' star attackers and he will carry the team's hopes of securing a much-needed victory against South Africa.

South Africa and Niger have met three times across all competitions since their first-ever match in September 2010.

Bafana have the edge in this rivalry, having won two games compared to the Menas' one victory.

Their last match ended in a 2-1 win in favour of Niger in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier in Niamey in September 2011.

Mauritania beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday to keep alive their hopes of reaching the African Nations Championships quarterfinals.

With Tanzania having already won Group B and qualified for the last eight, the two teams were fighting to ensure who finishes as runner-up.

Mauritania started with skipper Bessam twice missing the target, including a 10th- minute golden chance when the Burkinabe keeper prevented him from tapping in at a close range.

Alassane Diop broke the deadlock when he converted from the penalty spot after the Burkinabe Stallions's striker Abdoulaye Touré was send off for a rough tackle on Bessam.

The victory takes Mauritania to seven points - two behind the co-hosts Tanzania.

Madagascar beat Central African Republic 2-0 in a tense earlier game, thanks to two late goals.

Toky Rakotondraibe and Nomena Rafanomezantsoa were on target to earn Madagascar their first win after three matches and take their tally to four points.

The defeat ended CAR's futile campaign in this tournament having conceded six without reply, and extending their run to three group-stage exits in three Chan appearances.

The final round of group matches will be played on August 16 with Tanzania facing Central African Republic and Madagascar playing Burkina Faso.

Kenya will play their upcoming match against Zambia in the African Nations Championship (Chan) in front of a reduced crowd, the local organising chairman said Tuesday, after home fans have repeatedly invaded the stadium ahead of games.

It is the first time three east African countries – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – have hosted the competition, but the historic moment has been over-shadowed by long delays over the stadiums' readiness and now unruly spectators.

Crowds have stormed Nairobi's Kasarani stadium without tickets at previous matches involving Kenya, with videos on social media showing people chaotically streaming into the facility being shared – and condemned – widely online.

On Monday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a fine to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) totalling $17 500 over the disturbances in the stadiums.

"CAF have told us we shall not have a full stadium," local organising committee chairman Nicholas Musonye told reporters on Tuesday.

"Why should we be punished? It's our bad behaviour. Only 27 000 fans who have purchased online e-tickets will be allowed to enter the stadium," he said, with physical tickets not accepted.

The stadium has a capacity for Chan games of 48 000.

"Our security will be on duty alert and make sure nobody violates the order," Musonye added.

Responding to the fines and the crowd reduction, FKF chief Hussein Mohammed urged attendees to adhere to the CAF protocols.

"The future of Kenyan football depends on our collective responsibility and cooperation," he said.

"Continued security breaches risk attracting severe sanctions from relevant authorities, sanctions that would ultimately deny Kenyan fans the chance to enjoy such events in the future and erode the gains that we have already achieved in the recent past," he said.

AFP contacted CAF over the proposed limits, but had not heard back.

The Kenya-Zambia match on Sunday had already been sold out by Tuesday, according to the ticketing platform service.

Mohammed said the FKF would set up official fan zones for supporters unable to access the stadium.

Kenya are currently leading Group A with seven points, and victory against Zambia could see them play their quarterfinal tie at home.

Kenya’s senior national football team coach, Benni McCarthy, says he owes his defensive tactics to Jose Mourinho. Such tricks are handy for the 2024 African Nations Championship (Chan) co-hosts.

The Harambee Stars started the tournament, exclusive to home-based players, with a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of the Congo. What followed was a brave one-all draw with Angola after having played with a man down for over an hour.

Over the weekend, Kenya found themselves reduced to 10 men again, but still dug deep to stun fancied Morocco 1-0 and reach the Chan quarterfinal.

Reflecting on the brave win over the Atlas Lions, McCarthy saluted his Harambee Stars for the resolute defending despite the numerical disadvantage.

The former Manchester United strikers’ coach said he learnt such ultra-defending from Mourinho during their time at Porto FC. McCarthy was the main target-man for the Special One, as they won the 2004 Uefa Champions League title.

“I am not sure if you remember that I played under a certain coach Jose Mourinho. He was a master of that, so as a player playing in a team playing with 10 men, was hell, but we used to manage it perfectly like it was our everyday thing,” he said.

“I have learned the trade and tricks of working with Mourinho where you adjust and who you sacrifice… Unfortunately, it is not pretty for the fans.

“Most importantly, you protect your goals and if you are in the lead, you protect them at all cost. Sometimes defenders have to play midfield jobs and sometimes strikers’ jobs. That was the art that I learned playing under Jose. We park the bus. Not the bus, we park the train,” McCarthy said.

Kenya’s victory over Morocco saw the hosts record their second clean sheet in three Chan matches of two wins and one draw in group A.

The Bafana Bafana all-time leading scorer transitioned into coaching eight years ago starting with Cape Town City FC.

While the start to the Kenya job was not smooth sailing, McCarthy is gradually winning over the difficult-to-please football followers in the East African nation.

After an initial 1-1 draw against Algeria in their African Nations Championship opener last week, Bafana Bafana bagged their first win in Group C on Monday night with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Guinea at the Mandela Stadium in Kampala.

Guinea saw most of the ball during the opening exchanges of the match and immediately put pressure on Bafana Bafana as they probed for an opener. With South Africa sitting back, Molefi Ntseki’s charges waited for the opportunity to strike on the break.

Despite Guinea’s dominance, it was South Africa who broke the deadlock in the 10th minute. After a direct move into the Guinea half, a smart bit of interplay between Thabiso Kutumela and Neo Maema saw the latter guide the ball into the back of the net with a left-footed finish inside the area.

Guinea cranked up the pressure after conceding and levelled matters in the 37th minute. South Africa were cut wide open on the right-hand side of the pitch after Mohamed Bangoura picked out Moise Camara following a swift one-two passing move toward the box, as the Guinea number 10 guided the ball into the back of the net toward the keeper’s left.

The National Elephants continued to see most of the ball toward the break, while Bafana attempted to make the most out of counterattacking opportunities.

South Africa looked assured on the ball after the restart and re-took the lead in the 53rd minute via an effort by Kutumela. With Bafana finding space on the right flank, Wayde Jooste drove the ball forward and accurately picked out Kutumela inside the area, who slotted the ball home with a well-placed right-footed shot.

Molefi’s men continued to create chances after taking the lead, but were unable to make the most of their chances. Then, as the 80th minute approached, Guinea regained control of the match and piled on the pressure toward the end of the game.

South Africa eventually survived several goal attempts by the opposition attack as the clock ran down with Kutumela’s goal in the 54th minute separating the two sides in Kampala.
