IT'S HERE! THE SPORTS REALITY SHOW YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO MISS...

Following a countrywide search for the next SuperSport superstar, the SuperSport MVP Talent Search show is about to hit your screens as a reality television show with a sporty twist.

Catch it this Sunday, 26 October, at 9pm on Mzansi Magic and SuperSport Variety 4.

The show is dedicated to unearthing the next generation of broadcasting and commentary talent in South Africa, with SuperSport’s Hope Mbhele and Tshego Koke leading the charge for this competition as the hosts.

Five provinces - Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Western Cape - saw 100s of hopefuls audition for a chance to join the World of Champions. The on-ground auditions held at five universities brought in many excited and determined individuals who were not scared to dare to dream to join the elite SuperSport talent.

Although some could not hide their nerves, others sailed through the auditions with great ease.

THOUSANDS OF ENTRIES

There were over 2 500 entries, which also included online video submissions, in total. A boardroom full of SuperSport and agency judges, which included Neil Andrews and Owen Nkumane, had to sift through all those entries to get to 100 impressive contestants. The sessions were intense with robust discussions and differing opinions.

It took the panel a couple of days to get to the desired 100 contestants, who had to be filtered to the Top 30 talent. These 30 contestants were flown to Joburg to begin the SuperSport Draft Camp. The show takes you to experience the excitement as the 30 hopefuls make their way to Gauteng with their families wishing them well for the journey ahead.

Sadly, on the day that the hopefuls arrived in their base camp, one of the contestants had to pull out of the competition. Luckily, another participant was available to keep the number at 30.

But Sunday's first episode is all about the contestants. Some will drive you wild, some will drive you mad, some will leave you in tears, and others will have you in tears when they leave.

Whatever they do for you, just be there for their incredible journey.

JUDGING YOU

It doesn't take long entrants to be tested. On the second day the entrants go through another auditioning process, trying to impress judges Neil, senior rugby anchor Motshidisi Mohono, producers Nono Xaba and Arthur Khoza.

Little did they know on their way up that if they didn't shine, they could be part of the 10 to leave the show on the first day of testing!

Neil boasts an incredible 30 year in broadcasting, radio and television, and he is known for hosting major football and rugby events. Motshidisi has been dubbed as "First Lady of Rugby having anchored the British and Irish Lions Tour and the Rugby World Cup final as well.

Nono is a well-respected producer, and director and Arthur is an experienced producer.

Although the participants had made it through the toughest of tests to get to the Top 30, it seems the nerves had not yet subsided.

HEARTBREAK

Watch on Sunday at 9pm as some crack and some sparkle, leaving judges both impressed and disappointed.

Then there is the heartbreaking scene when Hope breaks the news to those who will be going home, leaving the remaining 20 to celebrate. 

The remaining 20 will undergo high-pressure, real-world challenges in both the studio and out in the field until the lucky Top 10 are announced in early December.

The  SuperSport MVP Talent Search premieres on Sunday, 26 October 2025, airing every Sunday at 21:00 SAST simultaneously on SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv 209) and Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).

Kanchha Sherpa was the last surviving member of the 1953 expedition that saw Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa become the first to summit the world's highest mountain.

Born in 1933, Sherpa was 19 when he was engaged as a porter on the expedition, and climbed above 8 000 metres (26 200 feet) – close to the peak – with no prior mountaineering experience.

He died in Nepal's capital on Thursday, aged 92.

Hundreds now follow in his footsteps to the summit of Everest each year, fuelling a multimillion-dollar mountaineering industry.

But while today's climbers follow a well-trodden route set by experienced Nepali guides, the team navigated the mountain on their own.

They trekked for more than two weeks to the base camp while carrying the tents, food and other equipment needed.

"Everyone walked from there because there weren't any roads, no motor vehicles, no planes," Kanchha Sherpa told AFP in 2013.

He remembered it as an arduous but ultimately joyous affair – although he regretted that the glory had not been more equally shared among the team.

"Everyone knew Tenzing and Hillary climbed Everest but nobody knows how hard we worked along the way," he said.

Sherpa was still a teenager when he ran away from his home in Namche Bazaar – now the biggest tourist hub on the route to the Everest base camp – to Darjeeling in India, looking for Tenzing in hopes of finding work.

Tenzing had already established himself in the Indian hilltown, the starting point for mountaineering expeditions at the time.

At first, the teenager did chores at his mentor's house.

Months later he return to his home region as a member of the British expedition, paid a daily pittance of just a few Nepali rupee coins.

Over the years, the name "Sherpa" has become synonymous with high-altitude guides.

Members of the ethnic group have become the backbone of the mountaineering industry, bearing huge risks to carry equipment and food, fix ropes and repair ladders.

Sherpa worked in the mountains for two decades more until his wife asked him to stop his dangerous journeys, after many of his friends had died assisting other climbing expeditions.

He ran a lodge in Namche and led a foundation in his name that supported families unable to afford schooling for their children.

From the windows of his lodge, Sherpa witnessed first-hand the transformation of the Everest region.

In a 2019 interview with local television he said: "Tenzing and Hillary opened our eyes and made development possible here."

The E1 World Championship, an all-electric powerboat racing series, goes to Africa for the first time this weekend with a race in the bustling Nigerian metropolis of Lagos.

The E1 Lagos Grand Prix – the penultimate round of the season after Monaco – will take place on Lagos's Five Cowrie Creek, featuring nine teams, ahead of the season finale in Miami later this year.

"This marks E1's first race on the African continent," organisers E1 said Tuesday. Competitions have been held globally in iconic cities such as Jeddah, Doha, Monaco and Miami.

Organisers and the Lagos state government said Tuesday that Ivory Coast football legend and a Uefa Champions League winner Didier Drogba and his partner Gabrielle Lemaire were instrumental in bringing the race to the continent for the first time.

Drogba and Lemaire are among the several global celebrities who own E1 teams. Other notable owners include American basketball great LeBron James and Grand Slam tennis champion Rafael Nadal.

"Bringing E1 to Africa represents a pivotal moment in our mission to grow electric racing globally," said Rodi Basso, founder and CEO of E1.

Lagos, known for its vibrant entertainment scene, "brings incredible energy, creativity and ambition that matches E1's DNA perfectly," Basso said.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy for the Lagos government, Gbenga Omotoso, told AFP that the decision to bring the race to the buzzing mega-city of more than 20 million people was taken in Monaco after the Lagos State governor watched the race there.

"Drogba's team came to us around March and proposed to us to have this championship," said Omotoso.

Drogba is expected to attend the race weekend, organisers said.

"It's the first time that the power boat E1 series is coming to Africa and Lagos is very proud to be the very first host of the race," he told AFP, adding it's "history".

Blackouts are common in Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer, where dilapidated infrastructure often fails.

Omotoso stressed: "There won't be any power failure, I can assure you".

In preparation for the race, the government has cleaned the coastal city's massive lagoon of plastic and other waste, and barricaded off 28 sites where waste would ordinarily seep through, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, the general manager of Lagos State Waterways Authority, told AFP.

Rwanda on Monday announced a long-term sponsorship deal with the Los Angeles Rams and LA Clippers, becoming the first African nation to partner with both the NFL and NBA for tourism branding.

Visit Rwanda, the tourism brand of the Rwanda Development Board, will appear as the exclusive jersey patch sponsor of the LA Clippers, while the Los Angeles Rams' home field will also carry its branding.

"This engagement enables us to export Rwanda's unrivalled natural beauty and extraordinary biodiversity to the people of Los Angeles as well as NBA and NFL fans everywhere," said Jean-Guy Afrika, Rwanda Development Board CEO in a statement.

The east African nation has long pitched itself as a hub for major sporting events and a leading ecotourism destination – part of its bid to attract investors and move beyond the shadow of the 1994 genocide.

In 2018, Rwanda became the official tourism partner of English football club Arsenal FC, with the "Visit Rwanda" logo appearing on the players' sleeves.

Kigali has also entered deals with other football clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and is fighting to host a Formula One race.

Rwanda last week became the first African country to host the cycling world championships which concluded on Sunday.

Rio de Janeiro's iconic Maracana Stadium will host an NFL regular-season game in 2026 as the league looks to expand its reach internationally, a statement said on Friday.

The Maracana – the spiritual home of Brazilian football – will stage the first of at least three games set for Rio de Janeiro over the next five years, the NFL said.

The move follows the NFL's successful games staged in Sao Paulo this season and last year as the league attempts to build its audience in Brazil, which is home to 36 million fans of gridiron according to league figures.

"Building on the success of the games in Sao Paulo, we could not be more excited to play in one of the world’s most iconic cities — Rio de Janeiro," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

"We look forward to working closely with our city and state partners in Rio, along with the historic Maracana Stadium, to deepen our ties to the tens of millions of fans in Brazil and across South America."

The Maracana is one of the most famous venues in football, hosting the climax of the 1950 and 2014 World Cups.

"It will be a historic event, as NFL games will be included on our city's official calendar. I'm looking forward to seeing an American football game at Maracana, the most iconic temple of world football," Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes said in a statement.

The NFL's games in Sao Paulo are part of a broader effort to spread the league globally, with regular season games also being staged in Frankfurt, London, Mexico City, Munich, and Toronto to date. Dublin, Berlin and Madrid are also set to host games along with the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia in 2026.

Emanuela Maccarani, the former coach of Italy's rhythmic gymnastics team, will go on trial next year, accused of bullying athletes, her lawyer told news agency AGI on Monday.

A former national team gymnast herself, Maccarani will face charges of abuse of minors at a court in Monza, in northern Italy, on 10 February.

The trial is the result of explosive claims made public nearly three years ago by two promising Italian gymnasts, Nina Corradini and double world champion Anna Basta, who both quit the sport while still teenagers as a result, they say, of the treatment dished out by Maccarani.

During Maccarani's nearly three-decade reign at the Italian team's National Training Centre in Desio, not far from Monza, days began with gymnasts being weighed in front of one another.

Giulia Galtarossa, now 34 and world champion in 2009 and 2010, said she was berated by a coaching assistant for eating a pear, and handed her diet sheet with the message "we have a little piggy in the squad".

Maccarani, 59, led Italy to the top of a sport traditionally dominated by countries from the former Soviet bloc.

The affair appeared to be over in September 2023 when Maccarani was given a simple warning by the disciplinary tribunal of the country's gymnastics federation (FGI) and handed back the reins of the national team, nicknamed the "Butterflies".

But in March, the FGI, under new president Andrea Facci, sacked Maccarani.

The FGI's official explanation to AFP at the time of her dismissal was that the organisation wanted to "open a new cycle in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics".

Among those to win world and Olympic medals under Maccarani's charge is Sofia Raffaeli, who took bronze in the all-around discipline at the 2024 Games in Paris.

China dominated every final of badminton's Hong Kong Open on Sunday, with world No 4 Li Shifeng comfortably beating India's Lakshya Sen to clinch his second world tour title this year.

Second-seeded Li, who dropped only one game in the tournament, overcame early stumbles to outclass the unseeded Sen 21-15, 21-12 at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

"This time my condition was not especially great, either physically or mentally, and the training was not very systematic," Li said.

"The only way to improve faster is to join more tournaments... it's about using this competition to bring out my inner qualities."

Li prevailed over Sen at the China Open in July and repeated that feat on Sunday with little pressure.

Sen's nail-biter upset on Saturday over crowd favourite Chou Tien-chen from Taiwan took him to his first final in two years.

In the women's singles, top seed Wang Zhiyi took the title from defending champion and compatriot Han Yue 21-14, 24-22.

Wang told reporters the clash was "quite tough" because she was not in top form, adding that the victory over her teammate came with a sense of "emotional release".

China's Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang came from behind to defeat Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty 19-21, 21-14, 21-17 to win the men's doubles.

Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian outperformed Japan's Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 21-17, 21-15.

The mixed doubles final was another all-China clash, with Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping needing just 38 minutes to beat Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui in two sets of 21-14.

Just weeks after standing on the top step of the podium alongside his Spanish teammates at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, water polo icon Felipe Perrone is on his way to South Africa, bringing with him a level of experience and excellence rarely witnessed in the country.

The newly crowned world champion will be conducting two high-performance masterclass coaching clinics in Johannesburg and Cape Town this August. His visit, in collaboration with Spain’s renowned BIWPA Academy and South Africa’s Elevate Water Polo, marks a groundbreaking moment for the country’s water polo community.

Apart from his latest world title, Perrone is a five-time Olympian, having represented both Brazil and Spain on the global stage. He has won multiple world championship medals, numerous European club titles and has also been named World Aquatics Player of the Year, cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s true legends.

Perrone will be joined by top BIWPA coaches, Ferran Pascual and Miquel Moyana, offering local players and coaches a rare opportunity to train with some of the sport’s most accomplished minds. The exclusive events are scheduled for 16–17 August at St John’s College in Johannesburg and 23–24 August 2025 at Reddam House Constantia in Cape Town.

These coaching clinics are designed for athletes and coaches aiming to take their game to the next level. Participants will benefit from hands-on coaching to gain insight into the technical, tactical, and mental demands of elite water polo.

In addition to the training sessions, each camp will feature a special cocktail evening and Q&A session with Perrone and Pascual. This inspiring engagement will give players, coaches, and members of the water polo community the chance to hear first-hand stories from the international stage and learn what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

The partnership between Elevate Water Polo and BIWPA Academy reflects a shared commitment to developing the sport in South Africa and building an ecosystem that supports athletes from grassroots to elite levels.

As Nigerian women dominate sports on the continent, they're facing off, not just against top talent abroad, but a domestic atmosphere of mismanagement and pay disparities – and even the risk of repression for speaking out.

Nigeria is fresh off a win at the finals of Women's AfroBasket, their fifth-consecutive championship at the continent's top hardwood tournament, while last month the Super Falcons clinched their 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations football title.

The football team's successes in particular have come in the face of pay disparities compared to their male counterparts – when they get paid at all.

The women receive a training camp allowance but the bulk of their pay comes from per-match bonuses, which vary depending on the team's results.

Both the women's basketball and football teams have been plagued by late or unpaid match bonuses for years, despite their records as arguably the best teams on the continent.

But when the Super Falcons landed in Abuja after their 3-2 Wafcon victory over host Morocco last month, none of the players answered questions shouted by an AFP reporter in the press scrum about whether they would ask the president, who was welcoming them at his villa, about being paid the same as the men's team.

Nigerian journalists on the scene said the question was useless: it was far too politically charged.

"If you speak up against what's going on, you completely lose the possibility of getting what you're entitled to, you could actually be blacklisted," Solace Chukwu, senior editor at Afrik-Foot Nigeria, later told AFP.

STRIKES OVER LATE PAYMENTS

Not that there aren't clashes: in 2021, basketballers called out the authorities when they topped Africa, protesting against unpaid match bonuses.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation at the time denied any wrongdoing, blaming the issue on clerical errors.

Like the basketball team, the women's football team has found remarkable success, stemming in part from the country's population of more than 200 million – the largest on the continent, complemented by a widespread diaspora.

They also benefited from early investments in women's football at a time when other African countries focused on men's teams, Chukwu said, helping the Super Falcons win the first seven editions of the Wafcon, from 1991 to 2006.

Yet they only played a handful of test matches before they landed in Morocco for this year's competition, cobbled together at the last second.

The Super Falcons haven't been completely silent in the face of mismanagement and disinterest from authorities.

But rocking the boat too much appears to come with a cost.

"Players who lead or dare to protest... always risk not being invited or sidelined outrightly," said Harrison Jalla, a players' union official.

After Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie – now a commentator – led protests over unpaid wages at the 2019 Women's World Cup, she was stripped of her captaincy and was not called up for the 2022 tournament.

Former men's coach Sunday Oliseh – who himself was let go from the national squad amid protests over backpay in the early 2000s – called the situation a case of "criminal" retaliation.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) at the time denied that it dropped Oparanozie over the protests.

The NFF and the Super Falcons did not respond to an AFP request for comment on the allegations that players are afraid to speak out.

'SKY IS THE LIMIT'

Players still have hopes for women's sports to expand.

"I think the sky is the limit," Nigerian point guard Promise Amukamara told AFP in Abuja, fresh off her AfroBasket win.

"Obviously, more facilities should be built around Nigeria. I feel like maybe, one year we should host the AfroBasket."

Aisha Falode, an NFF official, meanwhile, called on the government to "invest in the facilities, invest in the leagues and the players, because the women's game can no longer be taken lightly".

Despite the challenges, women's sports are still finding a foothold among younger fans.

Justina Oche, 16, a player at a football academy in Abuja, told AFP that the exploits of the team inspired her to pursue a career in the sport.

"They say what a man can do, a woman can do even better," said the youngster, whose role model is six-time African Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala.

"The Super Falcons have again proved this."

Local badminton powerhouse Shi Yuqi surged to victory in the China Open men's singles final on Sunday, overcoming a slow start and adding to his country's near sweep of the competition.

The women's singles title decider, which also featured two Chinese players, saw second-ranked Wang Zhiyi defeat No 4 Han Yue 21-8, 21-13 in a dominant 39-minute performance.

That came just after men's world No 3 Shi bounced back from a game down to beat Wang Zhengxing 14-21, 21-14, 21-15 in 64 minutes.

"The impact, speed and strength of younger players are definitely better than mine," said 29-year-old Shi after beating 23-year-old Wang.

"So I can only say that I tried my best to withstand some of his speed."

The victor's hometown of Nantong is a two-hour drive from the competition host city of Changzhou, both in China's eastern Jiangsu province.

Shi's latest victory adds to his men's singles crown at the BWF World Tour Finals in December – his second such win in the prestigious competition.
